I finally parted with a few $$$ and upgraded my home PC system. The new system has a DVD burner and I'm looking to you guys for some advice.

What would you guys recommend I use to burn DVDs. I'm referring to making backup copies of a few of the movies I own. Before anyone starts on me about pirating, this is because my kids tend to scratch up the children's DVDs I've bought. I just want to try to avoid buying a third (and in some cases fourth) copy of their favorite DVDs.

Any advice on good software would be appreciated...

I've tried Roxio and Ahead Nero and I prefered Nero because its a lot more friendlier. This was a few years ago; My CD-Rom burning software is a little bit old though. i dont know if Roxio made improvements for the better.

I use NERO, it seems to work fine for me....burns DVD's and CD's just fine.

I like Nero as well.

DVD media is so expensive, but I understand about scratches on media. How many times have you loaned a game or DVD to a "friend" only to get it back with Rootbeer, dog hair or scratches on it. Sucks- I'm about ready to stop loaning my stuff out.

you need the old software to copy "real" dvd's, none of the current software on the market allows you to do this as it is now against federal law to produce the legit dvd-copy software...

DVD Shrink 3.2

It's free, it's fast, and it will copy almost anything including the newest releases.

I use DVD Shrink 3.1. Never had a failed burn. Burns everything and quite fast too.

Quick question about DVD Shrink 3.1., is it a stand alone burner or do you need nero or something like that before you can use it. (I have a dvd-burner but no software)

You need to use nero with it, as far as I know.

Weird, just today our Sensei told us about DVD Shrink, which he uses to copy stuff from Netflix.

DVD Shrink is great for copying DVDs or grabbing clips from them.

I use Nero to make my own stuff tho (like movies I've made or downloaded import stuff etc).

DVD X copy also makes perfect copies of DVD's but i'm not sure if you can get the program anymore.

If you just got it for "backups", why didn't you just get a cheap disk doctor?

The scratches are superficial, and if you polish the surface it is as good as new.

www.dvdrhelp.com is a great resource for tutorials, as well as a list of stand-alone DVD players and what media they'll accept.

Personally, I use DVD decrypter, then DVD shrink and nero to burn (my daughter can be a little rough on movies too).

If you're going to make labels and cases, try www.cdcovers.cc as well. Super resource for box/label artwork.
