Another one, Best Buy is having pre-sell on UP SteelBook on for $14.99 online ($7.50 sale). Similar to Snow White strategy, put a down payment and get a free empty steelbook case then come back on release date to pick up your copy and pay the balance.

Uh, the steelbook for Snow White at Best Buy is also listed as a DVD:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9426695&st=snow+white&lp=6&type=product&cp=1&id=2022185

Plus, there's only one of them listed at Best Buy for Snow White, so I'm sure it's the same one.

Here's the link to Up on BR at BB:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9506073&st=up&lp=5&type=product&cp=1&id=2019957

It's at $27.99, which is the same price as it currently is on Amazon, which used to be $31.99. My guess is that Amazon saw the BB price and dropped it down to $27.99.

I'm also assuming it's the same 4-disc one that Amazon has as their pre-order listing, though as they don't have any others, we should have the same 4-disc one.

Also, the release date is 10/11/09, which is a Sunday. I'd guess we'll see if there's a BB ad in two weeks offering the steelbook as a pre-order bonus. Up has a release date of 11/10/09, which is about a month in advance. Snow White's steelbook had a release date of 08/30/09, which was also a Sunday, for a 10/06/09 release date, also about a month in advance.

I think we should be checking BB with the search term of "steelbook" every so often to see if we're going to get more of them.

Its pretty cool that BB is getting steelbooks. I'll have to keep an eye on this thread to see if the blu-ray comes up. Hopefully they get steelbooks for other Pixar movies.

So wait, does this mean the DVD is only going to be $15?

I'm definitely going to buy the DVD but I'm not sure I understand how this system works. This is a preorder to purchase an empty steelbook which itself is a preorder for the UP DVD, correct?

It's quite simple: you reserve the movie for $7.50, and you get the empty steelbook for free when you preorder. When the DVD is out, you go in with your receipt, pay the balance, and get the movie in the regular plastic DVD case.

OR, you can technically "buy" the steelbook case ALONE for $14.99, and NOT preorder the movie, if you wanted to do this for some bizarre reason. However, seeing as how pre-ordering the DVD (which gets you the case for free) does NOT oblige you to actually BUY the movie when it comes out, only a complete retard would actually do this, instead of just preordering for $7.50 and just keeping the case.

As I'm making the guess it should tie into the ad from two weeks from now, we should know around then if it'll be the same or not.

I think I'll pick up this one at BB. I want it on blu ray but I think what I might do is buy the BD also, sell the DVD on ebay or something, then just put the BD disc inside the steelbook.

I'm guessing you'd have to return the steelbook if you returned the dvd or cancelled the preorder?

Coffee, you linked to the 2-disc with the worthless digital copy for $21.99. What about the single-disc version (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9506153&st=up&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=2019957) for $16.99?

I sure as balls don't want to pay extra for a digital copy.

If it only applies to BD or DVD+Digital, I'll be giving them $7.99 for the fake preorder gimme-steelbook, then wait to buy it used from either FamilyVideo for $5.99 (how I got Bolt a little while back) or possibly Redbox for $7 shortly after release (they had Coraline and Watchmen available to buy for $7 about 2-3 weeks after release).

Darkness: If it works like Snow White, you can preorder the BD version and they'll still give you the DVD steelbook. See here (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?type=category&id=pcmcat190600050017) for more info on that.

A bit off topic here, but I pre-ordered the Snow White steelbook the day the offer was offically made available and didn't even know that I could go and pick it up already. However, I ordered it on BB's web site and made it for store pick-up. I have yet to be charged for anything, so technically I haven't really put a down payment. Since I don't want to waste time/gas going down to my local BB, do you think I could just go on release day and grab both the steelbook and the BD in one go?

Easy-to-answer question:

If I pre-order B&M in one store to get the steelbook, can I use the $7.50 preorder credit at a BB in a completely different state to purchase the DVD? Or will it be like Gamestop where the place you preorder is the place you need to pick it up at?

I'm not positive, but I think you can probably pick it up at any best buy, because their preorder system isn't like gamestop, it doesn't seem like they reserve you a copy. You just grab a copy of the shelf and take it to the register with your preorder receipt which knocks of whatever you already paid..

kerig - the pre order credit does follow you wherever and you can use it which ever store you want to, however the store you pre order it at is supposed to pull a copy for you and if you get a jerk customer service rep, you could run into problems. so in short ymmv

If you really want the steelbook I would suggest that you call or head down there to pick it up before the release day since most BB employees are completely clueless to this promotion and your pre-ordered steelbook might not have been set aside.

Since we're not likely to get a coupon for Up like we did with Snow White, I wonder how BB's pricing will fit in with Amazon, DeepDiscount, TRU, Target and Walmart.

Amazon has it for $27.99 right now, to match BB. Walmart is at $27.86, like they always do to undercut the competition.

I doubt they'll get this one right either. It's printed in English on the back of the steelbook packaging. Made plenty of sense to me when I read it.

If they can't figure it out from that, Best Buy needs to make sure literacy in the English language isn't something they're leaving off their job applications.

Hi All, I just wanted to chime in and say a few words regarding the "Jumbo" steelbook "style". I buy quite a few discs from Germany (I'm 1/2 German) and like some of the limited, smaller films. The Fast & Furious 1-4 release, was the same style as the upcoming "Up". Here are some user photos uploaded on Amazon.com. http://www.amazon.com/Furious-Jumbo-SteelBook-German-Region/dp/B002OJLB4Y

Please note that the actual FF 1-4 BD "jumbo" steelbook title was originally available at Amazon.de. Amazon.com is pulling this in, through their title feed. I have it and still like it-although it does slightly resembles some of the "tin" releases you may find at Australian Retailer EZ Video and others.

Hope this helps,
Sariena

Well my understanding with preorder items... they are a free gift for preordering... so I would think that you can go back and get your money if you don't pick it up and nothing should be said about the steelbook... now I've not tried this but I would think that's how it should work.

As far as the $5.00 thing... well when it's scanned it's $7.50, it also says $7.50 deposit required on the package, so I would guess it's very YMMV as to whether you could get it for $5.00

Not super impressed with it, but free is free.

$5 is the minimum deposit for pre-order. $7.50 is without pre-order.Incorrect. It's the same as the Snow White pre-order, $7.50 down. Same routine as the Snow White pre-order, scan two UPC's, pay $7.50 + tax.

Well my understanding with preorder items... they are a free gift for preordering... so I would think that you can go back and get your money if you don't pick it up and nothing should be said about the steelbook... now I've not tried this but I would think that's how it should work.

As far as the $5.00 thing... well when it's scanned it's $7.50, it also says $7.50 deposit required on the package, so I would guess it's very YMMV as to whether you could get it for $5.00The back of the cardboard over the case says you have two weeks to pick up the pre-order and if you don't after that date (11/27/09 for Up), then the receipt can be refunded. No mention anywhere about handing the steelbook back to BB when refunding the receipt.

Plenty of people have done it and kept the steelbook without any apparent issue. Plus, if BB thinks they can charge $14.99 tax on it on the back end of things, they can't, since you didn't agree to that charge when making the purchase.

Well I wasn't planning to go back to get the $7.50 back; I don't know how I'd feel about keeping the Up steelbook for completely free.

I read the slip on the back of the steelbook and thought I knew how it worked, but when the cashier scanned the two UPC's, the total came to around $22, so she deducted the $14.99 charge (for the steelbook I guess) because it was supposed to be free, and I was left with the 7.50 for the Blu-Ray pre-order. I'm not sure if it mentions a steelbook anywhere on the receipt, but I don't think it does.

got mine today at my local BB. just like stated before the deposit for the presell is $7.50 the same price as the pre sell for Snow White steelbook. i think the $5 varies depending on store. i did use the best buy 10% coupon, so if you are going to get this i suggest bringing the coupon as well ($.75) [Have only till monday to use or for Reward zone silver has till next week). Good luck to all that can find this. i am looking at it now an boy its pretty big!!!

Deleting the 14.99 charge basically turned it into what Pooky said aboveIf they didn't scan the UPC for the steelbook itself, there won't be a line item for it on the receipt.

If they scanned both UPC's, one for the BR or the DVD version and one for the steelbook, there will be two line items, one for the steelbook @ $14.99 with a $14.99 instant discount and one for the $7.50 pre-order.

Two line items, they did it right, one line item, they didn't.

I saw the girl only scan one bar code when the instructions on the bottom say to scan the steelbook bar code + a BD/DVD bar code. My reciept only shows a pre-order for $7.50 with no mention of a steelbook.

Imagine if the cashiers made this mistake several times. Their inventory would be so screwed that they may think there was a ton of "shrinkage" on these.

I think these mistakes work to our advantage if we want to keep the steelbook and get our pre-order money back. There's nothing on the receipt to remind them about the steelbook only that we pre-ordered a movie.

Just picked mine up and noticed that the pic in the original post is a little different from actual case. Instead of the normal case thats the thickness of a normal DVD, its a little thicker than a TV series set would be with steel front and back covers. Havent had a chance to look at it thouroghly but the middle seems to be supported by plastic and a little thicker to accomadate the extra discs I assume. Sorry if someone already posted this. Dont have timet or ead through the whole post.

There's nothing on the receipt to remind them about the steelbook only that we pre-ordered a movie. The flip side of that is if you go into the store to do a pre-order and pick up the steelbook, and when they can't find them when the computer says there's 5 of them in-store, you're likely to get a bit irked about that problem.

Works both ways, though when the inventory is out of whack for those, people don't tend to be very understanding.

for whatever reason, I got the vibe that this thing would be a piece of trash (either from the pics I saw or from the people that posted) but it is actually very nice. I really like the steelbook and like the size because you can just put all the paperwork right in the steelbook with the discs.

EDIT:

and also, the people working there had NO CLUE what I was asking for and it took them 30 minutes to find the steelbook -.-

Stinky - I went in to capitalize on the Pinnochio deal (which was great - got the three disc blu ray for $9.99) and saw the Up steelbook with the $14.99 price on it. Went to the register, asked the woman if the blu ray was $14.99 (I couldn't imagine a four-disc DVD, which is how many discs that case held). She said it was, and even if it wasn't, I could pay $7.50 and take the steelbook home, then when I came to pay for it, if it was more than $14.99 I could just get my money back.
Definitely not a bad deal, but I really thought maybe they were just trying to drive some preorders by lowering the price a lot. Looks like I will be stuck looking elsewhere for the actual discs.

Pretty sure that Best Buy's price will be 27.99 on release day - or thereabouts. Your price, at register would be 20.49 + any taxes because
of the deposit you put down for the disc.

The 14.99 price is supposedly what you would pay if you just "bought" the steelbook, and didn't put a deposit down on the disc. Why anyone would do that is beyond me, though.

We may see the price drop a little bit before release day, though if a 3 disc set like Snow White is $24.99 from BB, I doubt we'd see much else of a drop from $27.99 for a 4-disc set like Up.

You're right about the steelbook being $14.99 w/o a pre-order, since the pre-order charges $7.50 and makes the steelbook "free" with a $14.99 bundle coupon.

You could just pay for the pre-order and not pick it up and come out ahead with the steelbook "purchase". I don't think we'll get much chance of a coupon this time around like we did with Snow White, I don't think we'd get much of a savings getting it from Amazon save not paying for sales tax.

Something to keep in mind about getting this from BB, as Amazon is now offering $10 savings when you buy Up and Monsters, Inc. on the same order:

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=239640

I redid my two separate orders into one order, and it took $10 off Monsters, Inc. from the order confirmation screen, down to $18.49. Up was still $27.99.

Picked my Steelbook yesterday at the Victorville, CA store and they had a few left. Since they are bigger they take more space on the rack where they had them. Can't wait for the movie to come out! Might just preorder both Up & Monsters Inc and then go in and get my money back for the preorder. Don't know yet... :-/ Love the steelbook though... really nice except for the huge plastic thing inside... but doesn't bother me at all though. :-D

Man, I had far too hard a time getting a hold of this.

Tried getting one on Sunday. No sign of it on the shelves. Asked the first grunt I could find, who told me, in order "That's an online only deal" "We have it in store, but it's still online only. You have to go online and order it for online pickup" "The add doesn't mention anything about online? Well, then we don't have it" "No, I won't check in the back". Would've tried another grunt, but there was a zombie walk going on in the mall across the street, and that just seemed more interesting.

On Monday, the only available grunt simply told me "Yeah, the online inventory is kind of messed up. We usually get those things with new releases on Tuesdays, so check back tomorrow." This was two hours to close, and since BestBuy.com said it takes 45 minutes on average for an in-store pickup order to be prepared, I submitted an order online for in-store pickup (it was 'available' according to online, and worth a shot, i figured) and killed time around town. Fifteen minutes till store close, I assume I fall in the far side of 45 minutes, head home. Seven minutes till store close, I get an email telling me my order's ready to be picked up.

Yesterday (Tuesday), I head to Best Buy on my way to a meeting. There's no steelbooks on the shelves, and they cannot find my order. At this point, I decide I should just wipe my hands of this store. After my meeting, I go to the Best Buy near it, find a steelbook, and preorder. At the register, it took me a good five minutes to convince the cashiers that I should have the box. Wasn't until an experienced cashier chimed in with a "If the box is empty, give it to him" that I got to leave with my prize.

Sometime in there, it became less about actually getting the thing and more about not letting Best Buy beat me...

You guys make this all sound so simple. I need to get my local BB employees to read this thread and boost their confidence; I just went through the Snow White debacle. I doubt they'll get this one right either.

Well, phase One complete. I had to show them (cashier + trainee) how to correctly scan it this time, but it's correct.
The cashier told me just to bring the reciept with me and go to the customer service desk to pick it upon release. My wife and I laughed as we walked away...if only it were that easy.
