I was hesitant to get it when I saw the Best Buy deal, but after seeing this, I have to pull the trigger.
The "professional" reviews of the game are actually quite positive. The main knock on the game is that it straddles the line between arcade and simulation to a point where fans of one style or the other might be disappointed. It seems like people wanted this game to at least try to compete with Forza and GT, but the designers deliberately set the bar low. I say if they were going to risk failure, they should've went all for broke, but on the other hand, NFS has always been about arcade racing. I haven't heard about any game breaking bugs, but I'm sure if there are, those'll get fixed sooner rather than later.

Where are you reading these reviews at, all of them I've seen have been positive. I got the game yesterday on the PS3 and played it for a few hours. No bugs or glitches so far for me. I'm not actually enjoying it as much as I though I would, so I might actually trade it into Amazon now for a $3 dollar or so lost.

if you buy two 360 version and send them back in, they trade in for 35 each and can get you the $30 console code if you need it. of course use eca discount.
Based on the reviews, if you really loved U, you may be disappointed with Shift as it ditches the story and chases for more of a traditional racing sim approach. Seems like a racing "sim-lite".

Man, I got this game when it first came out....which was just last week, but it just doesn't feel right. The car handling is kind of screwy and the sound effects of the tire screeching is absolutely unbearable. 35.99 is a really good price, but buyers beware. This isn't really a sim or an arcade racer.

HEADS UP.
I just bought 2 of these with ECA & Prime for $35.99 (360 versions).
The trade in values are $35.00 for the 360 version. Just locked in my trade. So I spend $2 for the $30 console coupon. :) Hope this helps some folks.
I decided to skip this since Forza 3, GT5, and GT PSP will be out soon.

Ah. One of the "pro" reviews I watch did talk about some bugs and glitches, but it wasn't a big enough deal to knock it down too much. Also I read somewhere that the PC version had a lot more glitches, especially one early on during the test drive phase. After playing some more today. I decided I do not like this game. It can't decide if it's a sim or arcade racer. The sound, while nice at first will wear on you soon enough. What I do like is the cockpit mode, it's one of the first racing games where I used that almost exclusively.

The issue I have is that the steering is a bit twitchy. I probably will get used to it, but at the moment it is kind of touchy. I am not sure how much fun I will have with the game, but I can always trade it in.

I like the game, but I'm losing interest about 1/3 of the way through. Its weird, if there's too much story in a racing game, it seems out of place to me, and if there's none, then something seems to be missing. For me, there needs to be some sort of story to move along or I just get bored.

" the first title from developer Slightly Mad Studios, has come under recent fire as of late for the number of bugs the title has. One bug is so strange in fact, that even Microsoft may not be pleased by it.
“EA’s new Need for Speed Shift is the most bug-ridden piece of code I have witnessed in recent times.”, says Freakbits user enigmax today. The reason for this post? The title wanted to access the PlayStation Store (http://playstationlifestyle.net/tag/playstation-store) … on the Xbox 360 (http://playstationlifestyle.net/tag/xbox-360).

When navigating menus today while connected to Xbox Live the game suddenly crashed again. When my rage had subsided and I got a better look at the screen, I was pretty shocked at what I saw.
Was my Xbox 360 version of Need for Speed Shift really trying to access the Playstation Store? Microsoft are not going to be happy about this."
there was also another article a few days ago from another similar (er even the same) that mentions "the Line Launcing Glitch" er something like that. basically, the car just doesn't move and get's stuck if you try and launch off the line.
edit: in the article that i don't have a link for i remember hearing that most of the problems were on the PC version but that patches were being made as we speak. And the PS3 and 360 (tho having less bugs/glitches) are out of luck FOR NOW as far as patches go.
edit#2: i was dying at the temptation of the price drop because my cousin just got this so we'd battle online, but even if the glitches are minor imma pass. mostly want GT5 anyway.

If I had to be cursed with a buggy game, I'd rather it was this. I just got Wolfenstein and heard that the game corrupts its own save file and you can't finish it because it freezes up loading the last few levels. You can't replay levels, or it freezes up. And Raven laid off all the people that worked on the game so there's nobody even on the staff anymore to come up with a patch. Activision refuses to accept that there is a problem and passed the buck onto Raven, id, consumers, Microsoft, God, etc. Fucking asshole cocksucking motherfucking shitface bastards. $60 down the toilet because stores think everyone is a game pirate and won't accept returns, as least Gamestop is shady enough to take it as a trade-in and sell it so some other poor bastard without a second thought, but I can't bring myself to screw somebody else down the line like that.

BBY only excepts open software if it is faulty for an equal exchange (meaning another copy of the same exact game). and even if it wasn't software... a no-receipt exchange will come up as the lowest sale price in the item's history so no chance in making a profit (unless you bought it dirt cheap elsewhere and try returning it there). But as I said, CA state law won't allow them to except it (unless you get a super nice Rep er a dumb one).

Toys R Us does not have any price match guarantee. I bought this game for $59.99 - The day it came out. Couldnt I essentially purchase the game from Best Buy for $39.99 and return the sealed copy from them to Toys R Us so I get the price adjustment that Toys R Us will not offer. Its really not fraud since I am giving them a SEALED copy of the game which will be resellable. Correct?

You are incorrect. Purchasing the game gives you 150 gamer club points, which is equivalent to a $10 certificate. They aren't giving you 150 general reward points, but 150 gamer club points. 150/150 = $10 ;) Therefore, the game is $39.99 + $10 certificate. I'd know because I've done this in the past with a few other Gamer Club promos. Nice deal actually.

I personally see nothing wrong with that, and would do it myself...especially since ToysRUs's non-price match policy. Technically you are returning the same product, so they won't give you any hassle. Whether others here see that as wrong I don't know, but in the end its really up to you.

I had read about the 360 version trying to connect to PSN, but the video was a knew one on me. Good god, how could that even conceivably get past QA? They had to know they were releasing that garbage and figured they could just patch it later. Guess EA wanted to push it out the door before Forza 3 and the then unannounced release date of GT5.

Says right here in the Best Buy Gaming Insider you get 150 REWARD ZONE PROGRAM POINTS when you buy N4S Shift from 9/21-10/04. Also says you get 500 bonus points for every $150 you spend, which equals a 10 dollar RZC. There are no separate gamer zone points, but rather you get a bonus amount of points for buying games. 150 bonus points does not equal a 10 dollar RZC. Now if it said you got 500 bonus points you would be in.

This game is absolutely fantastic. Yes, there are some stupid bugs like the psn thing, but who really cares? The game itself is gorgeous and incredibly fun. If you think that doesn't matter then save your $40 - but if you actually LIKE to play games, this is definitely one to pick up. It's a tad more arcadey than Forza, so if sims aren't your thing this is your racer.
Don't be scared off by people touting it as a sim. It's nowhere near the absurdity of Gran Turismo. This is fun, fast, and beautiful. $40 gladly spent.

I picked NFS Shift for my PS3 on Sunday at Best Buy and I enjoy the game especially at the price of $39.99. Like many have said, it's not quite sim or arcade, but I do enjoy the mix. Although, playing this game makes me miss GRID that I had traded in a while back.
Personally, it's worth it for this price if you enjoy a racing game that's sim in looks, but not in feel. The cockpit view is still one of the best viewing experiences I've had in a racing game, with DiRT 2's cockpit view a close second with the water effects on the windshield.

You get Gamers Club bonus points which are different than reward zone points. They have offered both in the past, but the website clearly says you get 150 Gamers Club bonus points, not reward zone points.
The "Gamers Club" points are the bonus points you get in addition/on top of the regular RZ points. You get a 10 dollar Reward Certificate for every 150 dollars you spend on games (500 bonus pts.). Nowhere do I see anything saying 150 points of any kind gets you a 10 dollar Rewards Certificate. If that's the case, please show me where that's stated. That would be great news!
It may all be moot anyways. If you read the fine print on the Gamer Club page about this offer, it states "Not valid on sale prices and any other promotions except for Gamers Bonus Points." I believe in order to get the offer the game has to be retail price, which it's not this week. Hopefully this isn't the case for those expecting to get bonus points with this purchase.
Based on past history I would say this game being on sale for 39.99 negates the 150 bonus points. I'm basing this on me buying 2 copies of Dirt 2 a couple weeks back, which was also on the same promotion of 150 bonus points with purchase. I bought Dirt 2 on the buy one game get one half off sale. In my pending points I have 150 points for Dirt 2, but none for the second copy, which was half off. That doesn't bode well for people getting the bonus points this week when buying Shift on sale.

I got this game for the PS3 at Best Buy yesterday, and I find the controls and physics pretty similar to GRID. I think the problem with a lot of people saying the controls are bad is that they are used to playijng need for speed underground, most wanted, etc. This game is venturing into the racing sim territory, so yes you will understeer if you are doing full throttle into a 90 degree turn at 60 mph.
Pros:
Fun! If you like racing games, and you like games anywhere between Gran Turismo 5 to Midnight Club, th is will be a fair balance, but leans more towards the racing sim.
Super awesome mega great controls on my Logitech G25.
Cons:
The load times are long, even with an install.
The frame rates sometimes drop to about 30 fps, and it is noticeable.
Not anti-aliased.
Not all that great without a wheel, I've tried the GRID demo, and it handles a lot like that, but much tighter steering.
That being said, the controls on the controller were a bit hard to manage, as the steering is pretty tight, and you need to make full use of the analog. I also happen to have a Logitech G25. Once I plugged that in, I absolutely loved the game. The force feedback is pretty spot on. I wish I had a bigger TV, because the cockpit view is awesome, but I just drive SO MUCH worse in it. Once I put it back on my favorite bumper cam, I was outpacing everyone. I think I have to start over on the bumper cam with my steering wheel. The mode that the game chose for me is too easy now.
I only played 2 hours of the game yesterday once I got home, but I have yet to try out my favorite feature of this game: online play and customization!
To sum it up, I would recommend this to other racing game fans.

I picked up the game at Best Buy and have been enjoying it. As another CAG noted, I also use the driver/cockpit view almost exclusively and I never do that. Have been playing it with both the force feedback wheel and standard controller and both have been enjoyable.
All in all $40 was a good price. If you liked ProStreet you will like this.

If you decide to get the game, get it n console its either hit or miss on the PC version. I'm lucky if I can run it for 5 min without crashing, my frame rates range from 15-50 on default settings. I may go to SEARS to see if I can price matchthe game.

I've never been so cheated by picking up a game on release day. I wanted the EB pre-order bonus code, and I was looking forward to this game, so at least there's that. But then EB had the buy Shift, get 25% off Used coupon about a minute after I bought the game, and now it's already dropped in price so quickly? Blah.
For what little its worth, I am loving the game. Best sound fx in a racing game yet, it makes pretty intense. For the first Sim NFS has done, it's good. But I wish the franchise would find its voice and settle on it, or simply have spin-off titles.
Granted, they've done tried a few different directions since The Need for Speed on the 3DO. But I thought the story/lame acting in Most Wanted/Underground/Undercover was fun. A least they're sticking with tuning being a critical part of the game, but I can't recall a franchise being quite so schizophrenic in a long time.
Anyway, good price for a good racer.

I wish the franchise would go back to its original roots: give the player a bunch of exotic cars and several tracks to race to his/her heart's content. Ditch the customization aspect and any pretension of story and focus on the driving. Police pursuits would be fine, a la NFS: Hot Pursuit.
The other way would be to do something like Porsche Unleashed (still the best NFS game ever made, IMO). Create a bunch of games based on single manufacturers. Have the "factory driver" mode, and make the single-player campaign a drive through the brand's history. You could do some really great games with Ferrari, Lamborghini, Corvette, BMW, and many others.

HEADS UP.
So I spend $2 for the $30 console coupon. :) Hope this helps some folks.
Not to sound like an idiot but what is this $30 console coupon?
Dear NFS:S,
I'll see you at $20.

I believe Amazon has a promotion running right now. If you turn in $60 worth of video games you can get a $30 GC good towards any console purchase. And NF:S had/has a turn in value of $30+ at Amazon, so some people are buying it and turning it back in to Amazon to claim the $30 console coupon for only paying $2 for it.

Tried to enter 2 codes on amazon and received this: This offer has already been redeemed. Please enter another claim code or leave this field blank.
How did you do this?
We used 1 code starting with a "J" and one code starting with an "L" =)

Anybody considering this game and has never played GRID should seriously consider getting GRID instead. IMO, GRID is a much better playing racer than Shift. GRID lacks the car customization, but the customization in Shift is pretty light anyways. I revisited GRID last night after about 6 months not playing it and it still rocks. It's a "tweener" game like Shift, but leans more on the arcade side, but with some excellent car damage modeling. Shift car damage is really weak.

GRID is going for $19.99, doesn't come with bugs, and has received much better reviews.

This deal is dead anyway. It's a shame too. I was waiting for my Kingdom Hearts DS credit to come through to order it.
Sigh.
Guess I'll get Brutal Legend or Borderlands now.

Its worth the buy. I'm glad I didn't wait and picked it up from BB Sunday. I sort of walked-in about 20 minutes after they opened and they had plenty.
Deal is still on for the PS3 version. Seems like they are sold out of the 360 version or have reached the maximum number of units they were willing to sell at the BB price.

Not really "on" as it ships in 10-14 days.

Well now, that's just being argumentative. The price is still $39.99 and that's still a deal. Whether you want it now or are willing to wait is outside of that fact.

I was at my local BB today and they had a bunch of copies of Shift for both PS3 and 360. Apparently a 1/3rd off sale on a week old game still isn't getting many people to bite. I have a feeling a lot of people have been burned by recent Need for Speed games and/or are just waiting for Forza 2 and/or the new Gran Turismo. Bargain bin here we come!
It could be. I know I'm waiting for GT5 and Forza 3 myself. >_<

I wasn't "just" being argumentative.
Not being in stock means it's not a deal.
You can still order it for $39.99, and until they stop that, it's still a deal.
Also, they just changed the availability to "release on Oct 2". If you don't want to wait a few days, then that's up to you.

I can understand that people might be tired of The Need for Speed series of games, but I think the majority of people who buy this series every year can't afford $40 game at the moment.

Was initially intrigued by this deal, but after all the posts, think I'll wait for more of a drop. Sounds like a fun game overall, though.

A demo is being released tomorrow for both systems. If I like the game a lot, I may end up buying the game this week thanks to the sale at BB. I don't know if I can get by on GT5 prologue alone until GT5 hits.
PS3 price is back up to full.
I wouldn't worry too much if you missed it, as I think this title is going to drop sooner rather than later.

Reminder to all, if a deal is dead and still sitting in the main Video Game Deals forum, please report the thread with a note that it needs to be moved to the Deal Graveyard. This way we can clear it out quickly.
Thanks!
