Symantec *has* got a lot better in recent years. Five or six years ago, I'd cringe when I'd see somebody's machine running with Symantec products installed.

Still, Avast or AVG are way better. They don't load up your machine with a lot of bloatware, and both run very nicely.

But yeah, of course Symantec would say this.

you, sir, obviously never used Symantec Corporate. and really, thats the only product they have that matters. aside from ESET NOD32, all the rest dont hold a candle to SC. the end.

The machine I'm typing from right now is using Symantec Corporate (Endpoint)...so I have used it. And it's fine. (I'm at work.)

Like I said, they have gotten better in recent years, but no regular HOME user is going to have Symantec Coporate edition. The freebies are much better and cleaner than Symantec's home user crap.

MSE is out now but I have yet to download it because it comes with a thing called "SpyNet" that you have to agree to install. While it's intentions aren't to actually "spy" it does say there is no guarantee personal information won't be sent to M$ accidentally.

"Accidently"...That's not going to fly with me.

If by 'free programs' they mean 'nothing' then I would say no. I haven't seen a virus since that one XP worm that caused computers to reboot.

Symantec is a frigg'n virus. Avoid it like the plague.

M$

If you actually read it, it says

"In some instances, personal information might unintentionally be sent to Microsoft. However, Microsoft will not use this information to identify you or to contact you."

wtf did i say? I said personal information can accidentally be sent to M$. Sorry I didn't word it exactly as the EULA does and say "unintentionally" instead of "accidentally"...

Same shit.

Something so invasive should be optional but it's absolutely mandatory if you wish to install it.

I use only Symantec products and I have to say I've never had a problem on any computer, hell I just wait till they're free through mail ins as well so I've never actually paid for one either.

Now MaCafe (spelling) .... there's a fuckin nightmare of a product

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Symantec pays people to write viruses so the have a product to sell.

Avast and common sense does me just fine.

When I first started using computers there was no need for anti-virus software since using a 9600 bps modem meant the only way I would get a virus was by running a floppy disk. In the early 90s I tried Symantec products and besides the slowdown they caused the two versions I had destroyed my hard drive. In the late 90s Mcafee and the free software available at the time were worthless since they let viruses through.
Recently I have been using hardware and software firewalls in addition to free software and I haven't had a virus for at least five years.

I have friend's who currently use Symantec products and they still have extreme slowdown when the program is scanning. Unless Symantec has changed their practices recently the slowdown and the invasive nature of the program make using their product more of a hassle than it is worth. I'd rather have something that is free and do a little manual upkeep on my own than pay for a program that is extremely irritating to use.
