In an effort to help the gaming masses, this FAQ will try to answer all questions you may have about this year's Toys R Us sale. The Sale
Buy any two video games from anything in stock, and get a third game for free. The free game will either be the cheapest one, or the third game of three games with the same price point.

Is the sale online?
Yes, but until the deal goes online I do not know if there will be restrictions based on system or price point.


Is the deal available in Canada?

So if I buy three $60 games, I get a $60 game for free?
Yes, you can pick up any three games, at any price point. If three games are the same price the third one rang up at the register will be the free one.


Can I only get three games?
No, you can get as many games as you want, in multiples of three, and you will get a third free for every two you buy.


Can I mix and match my three games?
Yes, you can choose between all available systems for your three games. Example, you can buy two PS3 titles and one Wii title and get the least expensive one free.


What about bundled games (ex. DMC Triple Pack) of games that come with an accessory (ex. Guitar Hero)?
These games are also a part of the sale. As long as the product comes with video game software, no matter the price, it will count for the sale. The only exclusion will be the Wii Zapper.


But a game that comes out the 14th is what I really want, what about that?
Any game that comes out during the week of the sale will be part of the sale. For games that come out after the sale, see the Placeholder section of the FAQ.


Can I preorder a game as one of my games?
No. Unlike a Gamestop, you cannot fully put money down on future titles, only a small, $5 deposit. Games that come out after the 20th of October are not part of the sale.

When six games or more are bought, the system looks at games three at a time, depending in which order they were scanned, from top to bottom. Here we see that the third $49.99 game scanned, and the $29.99 game came off. It is very crucial that you pay attention to the order that the games are being scanned in when purchasing six or more titles.

The register system will always look at the three most expensive games, making the free one out of that set. If you purchase an odd number of games, you do not have to worry if one of them is priced a lot lower then the ones you want for the sale.

Paying attention and knowing this stuff is incredibly important when you are buying multiples of games, and "placeholder" titles for mid week releases.


Return Policy
TRU's video game return policy is 45 days, unopened with a dated receipt or gift receipt. If the game is opened, it can only be exchanged with the same title. No exceptions.

Due to how the deal is rang up, the games that do not come up free can be returned or exchanged for it's full value. The game that rings up free cannot be returned or exchanged because it has no value, only if it is defective can it be exchanged for the same title. Make sure the free game is something you want, or you are pretty much boned.


TRU's M-Rated Policy
Toys R Us has a very strict policy towards M rated software. A very small selection of M rated titles are in view on the floor, the rest are kept locked up behind the register in the glass case. You must be 17 or older with proper identification to buy any M rated game at TRU. If you are interested in a M rated title you do not see, ask an associate if they have it locked up in the back.


How to properly buy Placeholder games
I cannot guarantee this will work at all Toys R Us stores, some management might be against the idea, use at your own risk.

If a game you really want is coming out after the sale ends, but you don't want to risk missing out on something on the shelves right now, the step by step here is what you do. Remember, the return policy is set at 45 days from purchase.

1. Pick the two games that you want.

2. Pick up a game that has the same price point as the game coming out, and the same price point as the two games you picked up. Example, if the game you want is $60, buy three $60 games during the week.

3. Make sure that every third game rung up, the free one, is NOT the placeholder game, but one you want to keep. DO NOT LOSE THE RECEIPT!

4. When the game you want comes in, bring the receipt and the placeholder game to the customer service desk, and tell them that you want to exchange the game for something else. Make sure you make specific that you want to keep the one or two games, and that you want one or two different games instead. MAKE SURE THE GAME YOU WANT TO RETURN IS NOT OPENED.

5. If everything is in order, the exchange will be finished and enjoy your new game!"

$120 + Tax (or less if you use it get cheaper games as it does work on clearance and all games) for 3 games.

It is still better than 2 games for $90 which people were in love with from Best Buy ($45 + tax each then, these are $40 + tax each).

With many holiday release games, many are not quick to drop. Little Big Planet, Uncharted, Halos, they seldom drop quickly. If you want them for gifts or during the holiday season there are few places that match TRU process. Plus, after buying 5 games or so, they send you more money to spend in the store.

That's why people talk of "place holders". Buy a game of equal value to the one you want (and make sure it isn't the "free" game) and then return it for the game you want when it's available.

I got alot of toys r us trade in credit, so for alot of the bigger new releases this won't be that much different than what they've been already doing in terms of discounts. They've been giving alot of 20 dollar gc, sometimes even higher, for almost every game Ive wanted, which equates to the same discount as this when using store credit, but only having to buy 1 game. Not saying this isn't a good deal, but those with store credit don't necessarily need to rely on this for an equivalent discount. I'm hoping they do GC promo with uncharted 2and brutal legend.

The "placeholder" idea will not work. When you attempt to return one or all of your games later on when "better" games are out they will make you return all the games at $120.

Its mainly because prices at each store fluctuate too much, so Best Buy in general won't price match promotions like this, even when you want to price match a gift card bonus, even though theyll do it, managers dont like to do it. But promotions like these have too many variables that Best Buy just does not want to deal with. Unless the manager is really looking to squeeze in some extra sales to try and hit budget for that day, they most likely won't do it. I've got them to do it, but that was only because I worked there, so they did me a favor. Otherwise, probably not.

This isn't entirely true. I'm a CAG and almost take it as a hobby to buy games as cheap as possible, but I have 2 young kids and often pick up some overpriced Disney toy while I'm picking up a cheap game (I seem to pick and chose my cheapness, usually its with electronics/games/movies). I'd say there are others out there like me. Also, most serious gamers probably didn't think off going to toys r us to buy games before these deals, so in that sense their promo's along with trade in's are working

The "placeholder" idea will not work. When you attempt to return one or all of your games later on when "better" games are out they will make you return all the games at $120.

Also, why screw over a store that has been so good to us within the past few months?

And no one is getting screwed ... taking games back to somewhere you didn't buy them is screwing someone ... not returning a product for another product of equal value. Actually, while they're all great games ... my logic would be that you get better multiplayer in Uncharted and Brutal Legend. Fallout is simply an incredible value and will last you a long long time assuming you never played it or just never grabbed the expansions (Point Lookout is worth it alone). Ninja Gaiden 2 is hit and miss, I could see it dropping in price within the next few months since it's a rerelease and a port. Batman is awesome but short on replay value over time. Demon's Souls could be good ... but it's multiplayer component is secondary, in the sense that it does have the crossover feature but it's really mostly a single player experience with the multiplayer serving as a hint feature predominantly (but the invading other people's games does sound cool). Need for Speed will drop because car games always drop faster. Uncharted will be AAA, no doubt. Brutal Legend is a Schafer game so you buy it for the humor and the multiplayer looks pretty fun too.

So that's my take ... for what it's worth.

Yes, you can choose between all available systems for your three games. Example, you can buy two PS3 titles and one Wii title and get the least expensive one free.


What about bundled games (ex. DMC Triple Pack) of games that come with an accessory (ex. Guitar Hero)?
These games are also a part of the sale. As long as the product comes with video game software, no matter the price, it will count for the sale. The only exclusion will be the Wii Zapper.


But a game that comes out the 14th is what I really want, what about that?
Any game that comes out during the week of the sale will be part of the sale. For games that come out after the sale, see the Placeholder section of the FAQ.


Can I preorder a game as one of my games?
No. Unlike a Gamestop, you cannot fully put money down on future titles, only a small, $5 deposit. Games that come out after the 20th of October are not part of the sale.

When six games or more are bought, the system looks at games three at a time, depending in which order they were scanned, from top to bottom. Here we see that the third $49.99 game scanned, and the $29.99 game came off. It is very crucial that you pay attention to the order that the games are being scanned in when purchasing six or more titles.

The register system will always look at the three most expensive games, making the free one out of that set. If you purchase an odd number of games, you do not have to worry if one of them is priced a lot lower then the ones you want for the sale.

Paying attention and knowing this stuff is incredibly important when you are buying multiples of games, and "placeholder" titles for mid week releases.


Return Policy
TRU's video game return policy is 45 days, unopened with a dated receipt or gift receipt. If the game is opened, it can only be exchanged with the same title. No exceptions.

Due to how the deal is rang up, the games that do not come up free can be returned or exchanged for it's full value. The game that rings up free cannot be returned or exchanged because it has no value, only if it is defective can it be exchanged for the same title. Make sure the free game is something you want, or you are pretty much boned.


TRU's M-Rated Policy
Toys R Us has a very strict policy towards M rated software. A very small selection of M rated titles are in view on the floor, the rest are kept locked up behind the register in the glass case. You must be 17 or older with proper identification to buy any M rated game at TRU. If you are interested in a M rated title you do not see, ask an associate if they have it locked up in the back.


How to properly buy Placeholder games
I cannot guarantee this will work at all Toys R Us stores, some management might be against the idea, use at your own risk.

If a game you really want is coming out after the sale ends, but you don't want to risk missing out on something on the shelves right now, the step by step here is what you do. Remember, the return policy is set at 45 days from purchase.

1. Pick the two games that you want.

2. Pick up a game that has the same price point as the game coming out, and the same price point as the two games you picked up. Example, if the game you want is $60, buy three $60 games during the week.

3. Make sure that every third game rung up, the free one, is NOT the placeholder game, but one you want to keep. DO NOT LOSE THE RECEIPT!

4. When the game you want comes in, bring the receipt and the placeholder game to the customer service desk, and tell them that you want to exchange the game for something else. Make sure you make specific that you want to keep the one or two games, and that you want one or two different games instead. MAKE SURE THE GAME YOU WANT TO RETURN IS NOT OPENED.

5. If everything is in order, the exchange will be finished and enjoy your new game!"

Yeah, really. It amazes me how people think this sale is about anything other than a quick clearing of inventory-- TRU knows they'll sell a ton of the newer games at full price leading up to the holidays, and they need to clear shelf space for all the AAA blockbuster titles.

Well, this is going to be interesting. I know I want Uncharted 2 for sure. I am really hoping they stock Demon Souls or that it will be available this week. Kinda fear they either won't stock it or if they do it will only be a few copies. I already played/beat Fallout 3 with nearly 100 hours. I also played and beat Ninja Gaiden 2 on the Xbox 360, so not too sure I want Sigma 2.

UnCharted 2, Brutal Legend, & NHL10 is the perfect 3-pack for me. I'm a little worried NHL10 will be on TRU's shelves by the time UC2 & BL release on 10/14. If it's out now, you'll definitely want to grab it on Sunday, unless the game is a total turd like Mercenaries 2. Last year, I came late to this party, and the only relatively "new" release they had plenty of copies of was Mercs2. I'm sorry about the side rant, but given that it was delayed for a year for "further polishing", I just can't believe how broken Mercs2 was. I normally would mark out for this sale but with amazon handing out &10 credits and the $400 in credit I have I'm not as excited.

Last year I grabbed nine titles easy but I'm not so sure if I'll get any this year.

I also think the sale is normally at the end of October and not the beginning.

My toys r us holds the big releases that week so they're not part of the sale. I could do the flip thing but that gets old every year arguing with store associates.

I wouldn't get the NA version of that game. Atlus upped the difficulty so much, neither Shipwreck nor Joystiq's reviewer can get past the first level. Best to just import the asian version (which has full English support.)

Vesperia and Demon Souls are two completely different games. Vesperia had some mainsteam appeal, Demon Souls is pretty niche. TRU doesn't carry a lot of Atlus/NIS games... outside of stuff like Disgaea and Persona.

Then again, TRU is apparently becoming more aggressive about selling games so who knows, they might carry it. My TRU renovated last year and they've got tons of space so it wouldn't surprise me if they carried at least the regular version.

I hope they do stock Demon Souls Deluxe Edition... then I could pick it up with Uncharted 2 (and something else).

Many folks have been able to return one or two of the two and keep the free one with no questions asked for the past two years of this sale. Can always change, so this year may be different, but if there is a change to their return policy they have to tell you at the time of purchase.

X-Men Wolverine and Wolfenstien are the 2 I would narrow it down to. Ill pesonally choose Wolfenstien but that's just me. Plus I think Wolverine should be cheap around Thanksgiving or Christmas time.

Best Buy almost never PM's promotions like this. Occasionally, there will be some cool managers that match the promotions. Usually, however, they only match solid prices. It could never hurt to check, though. I'm sure one or two people will have a BB that will PM these, it's just that YMMV.

I dunno, that was why I wondering. Long ago, I wouldn't hold anything back from my BB's, but I'm guessing do the economy they've been a little more lenient of PM's and such. Once going to the point of just simply trusting me and not looking up the PM (which was their site mind you).

I'm cool with the workers at my BestBuy and they always laugh when I get games for cheap like the $10 matt hazard and other deals. The last B2G1Free from Target in June worked for pricematchin at bestbuy and I got prototype, infamous and red faction guerilla. i also got the bonus reward zone points, a t-shirt for prototype and a toy them mailed me for red faction. it was killer. and then a few weeks ago they price matched toys r us $20 gift card for batman AA and threw in the $10 gift card they were giving away. Brand new game for $35 :) It helps to toke out the cash registers and be friends with people, then they smile when they help you out.

Demon's Souls is most likely not going to be at TRUb because it is an Atlus game. I have not seen an Atlus game being sold at TRU before.



Long ago, TRU did carry quite a few niche/Atlus titles. I haven't been to a TRU in a long time - probably close to 1.5-2 years - so I'm not sure how they are now so they may have changed.

TRU if anything sells Atlus Wii and DS games, just not Atlus Sony and 360 games.

toys r us do carry a wide range of Atlus games, so odds are if you can't find it in store you probably will online. toys r us doesn't always have a page for every game coming out, remember many of these games release dates have been changed / cancelled and re submitted with different sku numbers so the computer may not have these numbers handy

It really doesn't matter if they don't have Demons Souls or any other game you may want if you just resell whatever you don't want and use it towards the purchase of something you do want.

For example I cancelled my Amazon pre-order of Uncharted for this TRU deal. I'll get Uncharted and any 2 other games that are the same price and just sell those other 2 games on ebay. I'll make about 100.00 for that. Therefore I end up getting Uncharted 2 for half price...much better than the Amazon pre-order deal.

I dunno really just make sure the game you want to exchange is NOT the free game and I imagine you'd have a decent chance of that working.

If they won't there are less ethical ways to go about it but I dunno if I'm allowed to post stuff like that.

Only game coming out that I want is Uncharted 2 then FIFA 10 but thats on the 20th....might get Uncharted 2 as my free game and get Fallout 3 GOTY (360) and a placeholder for FIFA 10 (360)
