I have a fairly new Dell Inspiron 1545. The DVD drive is a PLDS DVD+-RW DS 8A3S. I googled it but nothing really came up.

I think it is a dual layer... on the Dell site I found manuals for their drives - mine isn't listed but every one that starts with PLDS DVD+-RW DS is a dual layer burner so I'm hopeful. I guess I'll buy a 10 pack of blanks and see what I can do...

install nero, even a trial edition, it comes with a CD Info program which will tell you what the drive is capable of. ALOT of info.
That program reads off the drive rom and should be the most accurate than anything google might tell you.
