EDIT: I am now a Blockbuster Online customer. I have been VERY impressed with the service, with turn around time averaging 1-2 days. The free coupons make it an offer you shouldn't refuse.

Blockbuster online info:
3 rentals out at a time
2 free in-store game/movie rentals a month
Free first month, $15 each month thereafter

im too freaking cheap to buy a Dvd player and dont feel like sticking mail order dvds into my ps2. Might get one the day after thanksgiving if the rumors im hearing are true ( DVD Players 20 bucks at walmart)

There was some code that allowed a month free trial instead of just two weeks. I used it last month...

Anyway, Blockbuster's selection is overall terrible compared to Netflix if you are deep into film. If you're looking for blockbusters, you know where to go...

10-06-2004, 02:37 PM
The selection on DVD's is decent in my opinion. The new release wait times can vary though...some take a long time, other I get right away. They actually shipped The Day After Tomorrow already (released on Oct.12th)

They ship pretty quickly for me also....1-2 days after the ship date I get them (I'm in Michigan)

The do have a lot of the re-released and SE that come out...NetFlix rarely carries the NEW version of the movie.

I got in for $15.99/month for 6-months....so I'm using it over NetFlix. I may switch back to Netflix after 6-months though...although, BlockBuster is doing just fine right now.
They also send you TWO in-store FREE rental coupons each month...just in-case that new release is at a Very Long Wait online (or any other movie you want)

10-06-2004, 02:45 PM
Well right now i have both netflix and blockbuster. Blockbuster is cheaper and the 2 in store rentals a month rock when you wanna see a movie but its in between the shipping days or if you still got the last movies sent cuz your lazy like me...but as said netflix is a ton better in the number and types of movies to pick. Also i have never had a short wait on any release new or old on netflix and have had 2 short waits my first time trying blockbuster.
With all this said...sign up for the 2 week trial anyways because its good for the site and you dont have to pay or watch the movies if you dont want to.

hmm i might do the trial but netflix is worth the extra 2 bucks a month, they have a much better selection and an AMAZING turn around.

example: this tuesday i put a dvd in the mail to sent back to them...this thursday the next disc on my list came...i dont know how they do it, but yeah its hot...

how much does this benefit cag? because im considering just doing the trial, but if it gets you 50 cents id rather just send 50 cents Xop

I'm not sure if I am allowed to say according to the affilliate terms, but its a suprisingly high amount. They are really being agressive in an effort to sign up people for this trial.

does it matter if I cancel the trial early (like only rent one set of movies, return them and cancel)?

if that is cool, I would probably sign up in the morning

Weedy649
10-10-2004, 05:32 AM
its about the same. I ordered dvds from netflix and blockbuster and they both came in same day..6 movies to watch^^. I know CAG will get more then .50 guys i mean come on...they need to try and compete against netflix so they will reward those who bring them customers.
This is a chance for all CAGs to pay up for their money saved without spending money. Its too good to be true so sign up through CAG today!

10-10-2004, 05:43 AM
i would go with blockbuster if their selection was as good/better than netflix because you get 2 rentals in store a month, but the sad truth is that they need to bulk up their selection or get left in the dust...

they have no sealab dvds (wtf?)

their star trek dvds consist of 4 seasons of voyager, 1 season of ds9, and 1 season of old star trek...not even a single season of next gen!

i added all their lupin the 3rd dvds to my queue and there are currently 8 vol's of episodes and a few movies, well they seems to have alot, but when i was addinging (they were not listed in order =o\ ) they dont have vol. 6? wtf?! 1-5 and 7-8 but no 6?!

they could and prolly will become much better but as for now they are playing second fiddle to nexflix's amazing selection.

I have already signed up previously, but let me add, with the free trial, even if you quit prior to the time period being up, bb registers you have quit AND still allows you to keep renting/returning dvds online! Pretty decent of them, and then on top of that you get another 7 days to return any outstanding rentals once the trial period does end.
If you want to stay with them, I believe they counter with a better 6 mo deal if you choose to quit first- but i am fuzzy on this detail.

Just signed. I have to say with a quick search, their selection does seem more limited than NetFlix. The strange thing is under availability for one of my movies it says coming soon, even though the movie was made in 1999 and I've seen the dvd at blockbuster b&m as well.

i like walmart's dvd rental service cause they are the cheapest by far (if you don't mind only having 2 movies out at a time, its less than 16 bucks a month (plus tax of course))......anyways, i did the blockbuster free trial a couple of weeks ago (used the COOPER code)......its was horrible service, they took forever to deliver movies, the selection and availability is only so-so, and they even sent the wrong movie once and then another time sent me one with the return envelope all torn up to the point where the movie could have just fallen out during delivery

i am not at all. i signed up on sunday and added 10 dvds to my queue. today is friday and thus far ive gotten 2!!!!!! dvds!!! wtf?! the first 3 of my dvds all shipped the same day (monday) and were all expected to be here on thursday.

there is no way they can compet with netflix with service like this...its just terrible and unless youre signing up to get cag some $ (which i think EVERYONE should do) dont sign up at all if you want a reliable dvd rental service go to netflix

because if they want my money. why would i pay them for shitty service?
if they arnt ready to give quality service, they should have waited until they were ready before opening the service.

2 dvds in a week? thats just fucking insanly bad.

as for whoever said that they wouldnt care about my complaints...perhaps they wont care as in a personal way, but i think they would care due to the fact that they have my money as of right now...they have my credit card info in their system and they are just waiting for my trial to expire so they can start charging me...they should be doing EVERYTHING they can to let me let them charge me $20, and providing a terrible service is not going to keep me on board

Where is Blockbuster shipping from?

the 2 dvds ive gotten so far have both been from lansing michigan

Introducing faster shipping and more copies of the movies you want to see.

Because of loyal members like you, BLOCKBUSTER Online™ has surpassed our growth expectations. While we're thrilled so many movie fans have turned to BLOCKBUSTER Online, The Movie Store At Your Door™, we know our rapid growth may have impacted our service to you.

FASTER SHIPPING

The U.S. Postal Service will now notify us when the envelope containing the DVD you are returning has been scanned in. This means we will send you your next movie before we actually receive the returned one. This means quicker turnaround times for you.

We are adding 10 new shipping locations in the coming months to speed more movies to your door.

MORE COPIES

We are buying more copies of both new releases and old favorites. This should reduce the time you wait for your favorite titles to ship.

PLUS, 2 BONUS E-COUPONS

We appreciate you using our service while we work to make improvements. We have added TWO E-Coupons to your account. These coupons are in addition to the coupons you receive every month, and they can be redeemed for FREE in-store game and movie rentals at participating BLOCKBUSTER® stores.

Blockbuster is just like Netflix. They must be holding on to DVDs the they get back and I pretty much have proof. First couple of times I sent back the 3 DVDs on the same day back and they would just get two and never get the third one along with the other two. But the last time I sent all three in the same mailer and they still claim that they only got two and not the third. How is that even possible. Whatever blockbuster.

anyone who got in during the free year/six month plan should check their billing info. Blockbuster changed my billing date from July to June last week although I'm not sure what to make of it. I was expecting them to start charging $15/month, but they could also be using it as a scare tactic to get people to cancel their plans. it still says that my current plan will stay in effect until november and that I'm going to be charged $0.00 a month so maybe they'll just charge $0.00 until november? I also used a prepaid credit card(with nothing on it) so I'm not sure how they'll try to bill me? I'm ready to cancel but I'm not sure yet, I'd feel like an ass if they didn't charge anything.

Well I called their Customer service, she said they will honor the FREE 6 months, and upgraded my account from 1 month free to 6 months, Next billing NOV 12, 2005 :), give it a try

I was just questioning my account billing cycle which said 6/12 was my next billing cycle, then got an email that said 7/12 I will get billed. I just called to see which is it and she said I see that you signed up under a 6 month FREE member ship. so she said they will honor it cheers

anyone who got in during the free year/six month plan should check their billing info. I'm ready to cancel but I'm not sure yet, I'd feel like an ass if they didn't charge anything.

you are correct, at least thats what I got from a convo when I called BLockbuster customer service. They said to ignore the billing cycle date, and to ignore the email I jsut got a few hours ago. They said yes you will be charged eacdh month till NOV 12, but for only $0.00.

She said just ignore the billing cycle date, and if im charge just call them back(she made note in my account not to be charge till NOV 12, 2005 unless canceled(not to charge on NOV 12). I then got an Email from blockbuster.com saying my account info has been updated :)

Yeah I signed up for the free year, then it went down to 2 months, then to 1 month. I never recieved a single email notification about either drop, and they were ready to bill me. This made me pretty mad, so I cancelled and complained. I would not sign up again with them, I like going to the rental store anyway, where I have a similar deal(hollywood video mvp).

I signed up and got just a free month, but I'm not complaining. The service works fine for how much we watch movies.

The 2 free instore rentals are really cool. If your store is doing the one week grace period (end of late fees) you can have each game out for 12 days . . . 24 days out of the month you can have out a game. I did God of War, Midnight Club 3, Psychonauts, and now have out Advent Rising!

This really helps me to put off buying new games until they are cheap (I'll get God for $15 someday).

Yea i signed up for a free trial to help out this site about 4 months ago. I'm still a member, they have a great turn around time. If i mail out a dvd first thing monday morning or over the weekend at the post office i'll usually get a dvd back on wednesday. I'm watching a bunch of good and the 2 free game rentals a month pays for itself. You basically get to keep a game out for a month because of their new rental plan where it's "due back" by x but not really due back till xx.;)

I've been a blockbuster subscriber for a while, but they recently changed the policy on their e-coupon usage and they now do not allow those coupons to be used towards game rentals.

I contacted their customer service to lodge my complaint and they responded that due to the higher cost of game rentals (a ridiculous $7.99 at my BB) they found it no longer made economic sense to allow the e-coupons to be used for game rentals. Of course skirting the obvious fact that they are the ones taking game rental prices to that atrociously high price point.

Essentially over the course of a few months they've eliminated the two major advantages they had over netflix (1) Price & 2) free rentals including games)

Where did you get this info about no more free game rentals? I haven't heard about this anywhere.

If it's true, thanks for the heads up. Despite the problems I had, I planned to stay loyal to BBO. If they get rid of free game rentals, though, I will cancel my subscription. 8-10 day turnaround, and now no free game rentals. Time to say bye to BBO.

BTW, BBO is $18 a month, not $15 as the topic says. The price went up for new members quite a few months ago (current members keep the lower rate until next year).

It happened when I tried to use my most recent coupons for games (they generated Sept. 4th.) The Blockbuster guy informed me that they had stopped allowing games to be rented but he would try scanning them anyway just to be positive. Sure enough, they did not work. I also noticed that there had been a change on the text of the coupon and games were no longer mentioned as a use.

I contacted Blockbuster Online's customer service through the online form and this was the response they gave me:

Thank you for contacting BLOCKBUSTER Online Customer Service.

Unfortunately game rentals are no longer available with the use of in-store rental e-coupons. Based on the current prices to rent a game in-store, it was not cost effective to continue this as a part of our membership plans. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

^ Hmm, my e-coupons generated 4-5 days after yours and they still said free movie or game rental. I'm going to check to see if they change when the new ones come out on October 8. Maybe this is a regional thing. If it ends up happening to me, though, I definitely will be cancelling my subscription (or at least reducing my plan to a cheaper price).

erichoya97
09-30-2005, 03:05 PM
It very well could be a regional thing. I'm in the Dallas area (Blockbuster's corp headquarters) and I think we often feel the effects first of any changes to BB policy. For example they recently announced they were testing a cost increase in the monthly in-store movie pass and the BB stores in this area were the ones affected.

Hopefully for your sake it is a regional thing right now. Getting the two game rentals made the BB Online deal the perfect combo.

Blockbuster 18 per month 3-4 days shipping each way 6-8 days total

Only some people have lost their free game rentals. Many people I've talked to on here and other places still have them, including me.

As for raising the price, loyal members to BB like me get to keep the lower rate through this year. After that, the price is still pretty reasonable.

BBO gives you coupons every month. Sometimes it's for buy one get one free when purchasing a DVD, and sometimes it's to simply purchase a DVD for free.

I don't see how BBO is any worse than Netflix.

i've been with BBO for almost a year and so far, they've sent me the wrong movie once, ok, twice, sent me a scratched up dvd a couple of times and a broken one, and reported all of them. i still havn't had a problem with them nor have they with me. the 2 extra free rental coupons is awesome and so are the free dvd (on selected titles) coupons. they did let me know that after the year my rate will raise a little. i still think for all of the rentals and catching up of all of the seasons i've been missing of smallville and everything else, it's well worth it.

1.. they are way faster then Blockbuster.. Net 1 day turn around each way total turn around 2 days (maybe 3 last week one movie took 2 days to get there but sending has alwasys been 1 day)

compaire to BB where it takes 2-3 days to get there 2-3 days back 4-6 total

so your looking at 2 days compair to 4-6 pass

2. i got netflix for 15.59 for the next 3 months by buying a 3 month card off ebay compair to almost 19 i would pay on BB online

Ok, so I got a new movie in the mail today, but the envelope was different. Instead of the address that I mail it back to being some Blockbuster Online location, it is the address of an actual Blockbuster Video B&M store. And the envelope does not say business reply mail on it, and instead of it saying no postage necessary in the U.S., it has two stamps (one on the outside flap, one on the inside). Strange.

Are they using BBO members to transfer movies from the warehouses to individual B&M stores? And what happens if I put a different movie in that envelope?

welcome to the wonderful world of being pushed into a beta tester..... they are testing to see if its faster to send you movies from Stores instead of warehouses... expect your wait to be twice as long in the coming weeks .... and before you ask Thereis no way to get off the list if they pick you to be in the BETA TEST>.. i go put into the group before i got my account cancelled and it was taking 7 to 9 days for movies to get to me

they said hopefully by 2006 you will see a faster turn around time... If they want people to be in this BETA test group they should give you free memeber ships of something but they dont and that is why BB SUCKS

It took that long to receive movies even before I was put into this "group." So as long as it doesn't get any worse than the current turn-around time (7-10 days) than I'm not concerned.

i got back to blockbuster with the return to use for 1 buck for 1month deal......

joined thursday

got

4 brothers tuesday 2 day shipping (not bad)

still waiting

THE CAVE shipped friday today will be day 4
Red eye shipped Monday today will be day 3

blockbuster has also changed their REPORT dvd issues

it used to be if its not there by the EST date report it that day.. now its wait 3 days after EST date has past .... so they are saying Shipping can take between 2 to 6 days each way..... 2 week turn around would just suck

only reason i went back to BB is that we have another 2 video stores that take anyones coupons.. so i just print out each of my E coupon around 10 times
so each saturday i will take 2 coupons to 2 stores so its just like getting 3 movies out at a time (once i fall back to 1movie at a tiem deal for 10 bucks

bb 1 movie at time (plus using 2 coupons per week) 3 time = 10
Netflix 3 movies at a time = 18

so i figure by going back to blockbuster and using the hell out of those coupons im saving 8 per month...

^ They give you coupons every month, but I've only gotten coupons twice for a free DVD (after being a member for almost a year).

On a side note, what's strange is that if I look at my plan details online, it says I get movie and game e-coupons, but if I were to sign up now as a new member, I would only get movie rentals, not games. I also pay a few bucks cheaper for the same plan (it was supposed to change in 2006, but it hasn't yet).

http://img335.imageshack.us/img335/1792/bbonlinenewplan19bp.jpg

man this sort of sucks cause i wonder if they are going to be changing the lower rate plans.... I was planing on dropping down to 1 movie per month for 9.99 and then using the hell out of the E coupons

I got around 10 places around my house that would take this coupons

so i can get 3 movies at a time (weekend) for 9.99 a month *by using the Ecoupons at the different video stores)

i think i will flop though... more people would go with the game route then the movie .

I'm pretty sure the game route is only an option for those who already have it. They want to get rid of all free game rentals, so if you don't have it already you can't get it. If you switch to weekly e-coupons, you can never get game rentals again. They are trying to force you to switch and slowly get everyone off of game rentals for good. Personally I will never switch until they physically make me. At that point, I will just cancel my subscription and send a complaint email. So if they want to keep a loyal member, they won't mess with my account.

I wouldn't know how Blockbuster deals with new releases, though, because I always have them at the bottom of my list. This way the movie I want is almost always available.

BBO just sent me an email survey. The sad thing is I actually sent the movie back on Friday, the 10th, which isn't even a choice, but at least they are recognizing they have a problem with slow shipping.

We know receiving your movies quickly is important to you. It's important to us, too. That's why we need your input, and it will only take a moment. Your input will help us make continuing improvements to your delivery experience.

Please tell us when you mailed Crash back to us by clicking on the appropriate response below. Crash was received by us on Thursday, February 16th.

I returned the movie after Tuesday, February 14th.
I returned the movie on Tuesday, February 14th.

Just an FYI, looks like BB will be bolstering their online service in an effort to get people back in the stores.

According to an online survey they just sent me, they are researching an enhancement that will allow you to return online rentals to BB stores, which would eliminate the day or two delay for the post office to notify BB that you shipped a movie back before sending out the next one. In addition, you would get a free in-store rental every time you returned an online rental in-store.

If they add this to the current free rental coupons, it's a great perk, particularly if you live close to Blockbuster.

the return to stores have been going on since 2005 in a beta program... a manager i talked to said that it would neve work cause people would return movies that are not to be returned (in the beta program people were returning 3 movies when only 1 or 2 was to go to the store and the other one was to go in the mail)

they have been researching it since Jan 2005 so dont get you hopes up its just another thing they said they are going to do to keep people with blockbuster.... for those who are interested ( TAKE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK)

there is a dude Selling 1 year of Blockbuster online 3 at a time (NORMAL PRICE 215 for 140) If you got one of those Ebay coupons lying around you can get it down to 126

i just got one off him last night (he says he has 4 of them )

1 Year of blockbuster online 3 at a time for 126 (breaks down to 10 per month or so) GREAT DEAL

Just got this email from BBO. They are raising my rate, but letting me keep the free game rentals (which are no longer offered to new members).

"As a charter member of BLOCKBUSTER Online®, your promotional rate of $14.99* per month was guaranteed through January 31, 2006, and as a courtesy, we've extended your special introductory rate an additional two months. Effective May 9th, 2006, your special introductory rate of $14.99* will no longer be available and the price of our three-movies-out plan will increase from $14.99* to $17.99*.

As an added benefit, we know your current $14.99* plan includes our signature free in-store coupons, redeemable for movies or games. While free game rentals are no longer available for new customers, we're pleased to continue to offer you both movie or game coupon redemption with the new $17.99* price."

Netflix sues Blockbuster to stop its online service

Well the future of Blockbuster Online is now unknown. Today it was announced that Netflix is suing Blockbuster. They claim they own two patents on the online movie distribution method and that Blockbuster has violated these patents. They've asked a judge to shut down BBO and for them to award Netflix monetary damages.

hmm...seems like they only want to sue because they're greedy and can't handle any competition...otherwise they should have brought up the suit earlier.

Anyway...the CAG link is cheaper month to month..however if you sign up in the store for BBO, it's 17.99 thereafter, but you a free in store rental every week. Instead of two a month.

CAG Link
- 3 out at a time
- 2 free in store game/movie rental
first month free/$15 thereafter

BBO purchase in store
- 3 out at a time
- 1 free in store rental a week (4 a month)
first month free/$17.99 thereafer

I don't have BBO, so I wouldn't know if the purchase in-store gives you just free movie rentals in-store, or movie & game rentals in-store.

Sorry if anyone already posted that...just a heads-up if not.

there is no way to put a patent on delivery..... hell the post office could sue UPS cause they are taking business away from the post office... netflix needs to get its head out of its own ass... Hell netflix is pissed off cause they lost a lawsuit against its own customers....

lets see why netflix is losing business

netflix movies here take 2-3 days each way with no coupons

That is incorrect and outdated information. First, BBO does NOT offer free game rentals to any new members. If you are already a long-time member that has always gotten them, you will continue to get them, but BBO will not be giving them to new members. Also, they have raised the price for the 3 out at a time plan to $17.99 (doesn't matter if you are a current member or a new member). Current members have an option to take away game rentals in order to get weekly instore movie rentals, but if you do that you will not be able to get back your game rentals. If you cancel your subscription you will also not be able to get them back.

In summary:

1) New members can NOT get game rentals. Current members who have them can keep them.
2) 3 out at a time plan has been raised to $17.99 for both current and new members.

yes, it is very outdated, but still a decent deal at $18 per month, since a while ago they changed it so you get 1 B&M rental per week.

That sucks the new members dont get the B&M rental coupons? If I stop the service, and then start doing it again in a few months will they no longer give me the one B&M rental per week, with choice of a videogame or dvd movie?

I dont play that many games, and the good games(the new releases) are almost always rented out so it is sort of pointless to bitch about no longer getting games.

They do have loads and loads of the new releases for rent tho. and that is nice

so they extended my account free till march 31 and said something should ship out Hopefully by saturday

At least nothing major new release movies came out this week so didnt miss out on anything major. and they said they send me 3 E coupons (i doubt that big time --- they said they send me 2 last weekend and i never got them)

Just remember, as long as you are watching five or more movies a month, you're getting your money's worth.Or lower the amount so you get less movies; 1 at a time unlimited for $10 a month can still net you at least 9 rentals (with in store exchange and a coupon), and that's assuming you only get one online rental a week. That's still only a little over $1 a movie.

Legolas813

The discounted game rental is $4.99. You exchange your Total Access envelope for a $4.99 game rental (saving you around $3). I actually found out about this deal early on this summer when a BB employee told me about it.

This is actually a pretty good deal because if you rent two games a month, that's only $10, which is much cheaper than a GameFly membership.

Can't answer about bb, netflix saved mine for about a year though. I know they won't let you acces your queue unless you are a member so if you are thinking about quiting then you need to save the page on your harddrive. I went back to netflix after bb got rid of my free game rental each month (along with raising prices). I did send customer service a letter telling them I would only stay with the service if they started sending me things at the top of my queue instead of 20 down. They didn't and I did. I have gone back to netflix (I've very happy with the watch now downloads) and got a gamepass at bb (I'm hapy with it too actually).

I think I read a post of yours saying your plan was changed, but just wanted to warn that if it hadn't, cancelling will make you change it for sure.

That is why I am free to cancel now. In the past, I had been stuck with not being able to change plans or to cancel because then I would lose my two free game rentals a month. But now that BBO took them away from me and put a limit on my exchanges, I am free to change plans and/or cancel whenever I want.

It will save, and unlike NF, you can sign in at any time and access the queue. (At least I've been able to).

Thanks for the info.

i asked bbo and they said based on the amount that i used my account (basically swapping out 4 movies instore for 4 more a week) too much so they had to switch my account. so if you still have your account at your original sign up plan then they feel that you weren't using the plan as much as you could.
