I'm getting a 40gb or 80gb PS3 in the next few wks.

With this, I plan on upgrading the HD. Is there any particular 2.5" HD that I should be looking for?

Is there a limit to speed? 5400/7200, etc.
I've never had any problems from WD HDs like this:
Western Digital Scorpio Black 320gb 7200rpm 16mb cache, etc(can't post link)

Also like to put Linux on the system.

Thoughts/suggestions?

You need to use 2.5" SATA HDD. The speed doesn't matter but it is recommended to use 5400 to reduce the heat inside the PS3, and it's also quiet a bit cheaper. Putting Linux on PS3 isn't all that good and in somecase glitchy as I have heard. And you probably won't be able to do much with it. If you have a PC/Laptop it's better to put it on that, there are many free Linux OS out there. The PS3 XMB itself has a great webbrowser if that what you were looking to do with the Linux.

Would a 7200 produce too much heat for the PS3?

I've used Linux on a few other systems but have read that Yellow Dog is the best/fastest for the PS3.

That's correct, I believe.
