View Full Version : 12-Month Xbox Live - $30 with RZ:G Text Message Code

So during my daily scan of SlickDeals, I happened upon a deal posted by "Thepointis" in which he states that he received a text message from (332211 - Best Buy Reward Zone Gamers) informing him that he would receive $20 off the purchase of a XBL 12-Month card, as long as he would show the cashier the message he received at checkout.
Lots of people are reporting back on being successful on this (even the OP himself).
Signing up is free, and you should only have to text a message to: 332211 in order to receive the coupon/code.
Here's the thread in question: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=1652252
Edit: Expires 11/14/2009 - Also don't forget you receive 2% back for having a RZ account and 6.67% for your Gamer's Club Account
Note: Text Gamer to 332211 to sign up for alerts (thanks Malik)
Note: Some are reporting success of getting this deal honored for the Modern Warfare 2 Branded Kit, which includes:
* 12-Month Subscription Card
* Bonus: 1 Extra Month of Xbox Live
* Modern Warfare 2 Branded XL T-shirt

This of course is YMMV, but it's worth a shot (SKU varies from the one referenced in the Text Message)

Also reading that thread, people have had success texting the message to themselves, which is nice for those of us who don't have any free text messages. At least we'll only get charged for a text once (twice, I guess, sending and receiving - text messaging sure sucks.) From the SD thread, here is the text of the message:
Best Buy RewardZone Gamer Deal:
Show this msg & Save $20 on XBox Live 12 Month Card. Sku: 9636222 Expires 11/14 Rz Members Only. Limit 1.
I am not going to take advantage of this myself, as I have 10 or 11 months left on my Gold account.

For those sending the SKU to the number, I haven't had any luck in trying so. What I think what was mentioned before (and in the SD thread) is that people are sending the text message received by the OP, which states:
Best Buy RewardZone Gamer Deal:
Show this msg & Save $20 on XBox Live 12 Month Card. Sku: 9636222 Expires 11/14 Rz Members Only. Limit 1.
People are thus taking this message, and sending it to themselves...not the number associated with the original text message. I doubt a cashier will really take the time to look at it. I assume as long as you have access to your RZ account/card, it should ring up automatically, thus why I suspect this isn't offered online.
Good Luck!

I wonder if XBOX Live fees will drop now that PS3 is bringing real competition with the price drop and free online play. That's the only holdback I have when contemplating stocking up on another year of LIVE when I'm still good for some time. This is a really good price.

Don't forget that the 360 has had one, too. But you're definitely right about the pricing; free is the best price for online play.

I really doubt that they will drop the fee, they are making way to much money on it.
That being said, I can't imagine the outcry if they made it free without compensation to those who have already purchased xbox live, up to three years out.
If the did drop the xbox live fee, the likely outcome would be that they turn the rest of everybody's subscriptions into xbox live points (of an equal dollar amount to what is left on your subscription.)

I think it's likely they will make it free and I don't think it's necessarily the case that they'd offer compensation. They're going to presume that once people get over the initial upset, they'll be glad it's now free from then on. At some point you save money. I'm not keeping more then 12 months in any case.

I hate people complaining about the price. It's not great, but when people are paying up to $15 a month for WOW (which is just one game) we, collectively as gamers, can't really say all that much.

Wonder if I'll be able to use this on the one with the MW2 shirt that was advertised this week? I'm sure that the register probably won't like it, but maybe a slacker cashier will work it out.

Note: Some people have reported success over at SD at getting the Modern Warfare 2 branded card for the very same price, which based on discussion includes both an extra month of service, and an XL MW:2 branded t-shirt.
I don't see the shirt listed on the product listing online, but I assume you should be able to snag it tomorrow in-store...

Kind of weird... went to one of the Best Buys near me, picked up a regular 12 Month, but the SKU was different. I went up to the register and had them enter my RZ info and then scan it, and it rang up at the normal MSRP...
Then I went to another sales rep and asked him to look up the SKU in the text, and it wasn't in the database.

Unless there's an expiration date on them (which I have never seen before) the Live cards do not expire – same with Points Cards as far as I know too.

Just wanted to say that I did this successfully yesterday. I got the ODST card. This deal expires 11/14 per the OP at SD. Showed the cashier the text, she entered the SKU and voila $29.99.
If you have problems with this, make sure that your RZ info is inputted before the card and SKU are scanned/entered, people have said it won't auto deduct otherwise.

The SKU didn't work for my cashier, either with the MW2 card pack or the regular one. They tried everything - had my RZ card scanned first, etc. So, they had a manager override on the MW2 one. Good deal. Thanks, OP.

thanks op, signed up this morning, and just got the SKU text.
this is perfect as my live runs out on the 27th
i have two questions, 1 if i use the code tonight when i get home, will it then start the year over today? or will it just add a year to what i have left?
second, this has been my first year of live, got my xbox last year through one of the amazon deals, and used a credit card on the site to get live, i have already turned off auto renew, will using the 12 month card affect this in any way?
I'm 99% sure that it will add a year to what you have left.
I just signed up, but I have not received the text. I'll try this later today anyway though. XBL expires in a couple months so this is a great deal, especially if I can get the MW2 xbl deal.

Well, I have done it twice. My experiences so far is the cashiers are kind of iffy on doing it and always ask for a supervisor and manager to come look at it. Supervisor in Chelsea, NY approved after he looked at it and tried it. Manager in Rego Park, NY told me no, because he never heard of such a thing and thought it was fake but i asked again and he was like fuck it try it. It seems you can do it multiple times but I tried it at different stores. The problem with this text thing is corporate never told their employees about it. I always had the reward card scanned first.

Thanks OP! This worked great for me last night on a regular 12 Month Card.
The best part is that I did NOT HAVE TO SIGN UP!
All I did was very carefully typed in the text message exactly as shown (damn glad my phone has a full keyboard on it):
Best Buy RewardZone Gamer Deal:
Show this msg & Save $20 on XBox Live 12 Month Card. Sku: 9636222 Expires 11/14 Rz Members Only. Limit 1.
I just pushed send, typed in my own phone number, and then... (wait for it)
I received a new text message from myself!
(You might just be able to save the text a draft message, and not even have to send one!)
Then at Best Buy, it went like this:
When the guy rang up & activated the 12 Month Card, I gave him my RZ membership card, and then showed him the text on my phone, and said:
"I signed up for some gamer text alerts thing on my phone that was on the Rewards Zone website, and it sent this to me"
He then looked at it, a bit puzzled at first, but punched in the code into his system.
The system then brought up a Sentence with a Yes/No prompt.
He then pushed the Yes button, and boom $20 was taken off of my purchase price! :D
I walked out of there with my $30 year of xBox Live Gold!
To me, the best part is that I didn't have to sign up for text spam, or give out my phone number to best buy!

Worked for me. Got the text sitting in my my English class, leading a discussion on Observational essays, AND it was a point when we were talking about MW2 coming out today.....it was very weird timing.
Would have done it with the shirt deal -- but they only had XL in the stores.
Needed a medium. :(
But I did it with the regular card that came with Joust for free. :D Thanks OP!

Worked perfectly for me. $29.99 out the door. Great price for 12 months of live and a CoD4 t-shirt (although I'll probably never wear it) Won't have to worry about XBL until well into 2011 :)

1. Make sure to double check the number you're sending the message to: 332211
2. The message might be case sensitive, so in this case make sure every letter is capitalized (ex: GAMER)
3. Do not include any other characters, words, or anything else for that matter in the message, just the word GAMER to the number: 33221

It may have something to do with the carrier. Has anyone on Sprint gotten the real text message? I am on Sprint, and have tried 3 times (twice on Monday, once again today), and each time I get the following response:

Easy as pie as long as you are a reward zone member. And make sure even if they put the sku in and it won't show , it only shows it once they total it out.

This worked for me. I just got the regular 12 month card because I didn't feel like arguing with the cashier over something trivial. The COD bundle probably has an XL shirt, which I would never wear anyways. Either way, much thanks, op!
On another topic: If I were to enter the code into my account right now, would it add another 12 months to the time I have left, or replace it?

Man that took forever.
So yesterday I went with a copy of the text message since I just signed up yesterday (I got the actual text today).
First, apparently nobody cleaned up after the midnight release, so a lot of the Call of Duty stuff was at the registers already, including the shirt and subscription bundle. I went over to the register and told the guy I was looking for the bundle which was in front of him. He scanned it, the computer took a while, then he scanned my Reward Zone card. I mentioned the coupon I got, he looked at it confused. I knew you just had to type in the SKU, but I didn't want to do the job for me. And he looked like a newbie, so a good chance to learn right?
He goes to another cashier, she checks it out, looks at it confused, and just asks the manager. She tells them to just put in the SKU. All works. Then I swipe my card and the cashier cannot find the CID on the back of my card...
I had to point that one out for him...

Got mine, and used it to buy 2 cards, it took a little while, due to the clerk not understanding how the coupon worked.
For the rest of you, just to repeat what I'm sure has already been said. To get the discount, the clerk must create a new item on the sale and use the SKU from the text message. You will have 3 line items in the sale, 1 for the live card, 1 for your rz card and a third line added by the clerk using the text SKU.

Just got in on the deal and can't be happier. My live expired last month and used a 1 month to extend it. $30's the lowest price I've seen in a while.

Got my card yesterday. I didn't see any of the MW2 packs, so I didn't bother trying.
Thanks to the OP for the heads up on this deal!

I'm beginning to think if they judge the success of this 'text deals' based on this first try, it's only going to be b/c of the MW2 t-shirt bundles. There is no doubt that it doesn't work legitimately in the POS, so the only thing is supply and managers.
I think that everyone over at BB is going, "Wow, look at that, look how many people are taking advantage of this sku!?!" And then in two weeks we'll get a text for $5 off a $59.99 game if we show another text message...

Unfortunately, my BB only had plain old 12 month cards. Still, it's a good deal - I was able to get a card for $24.99 after a $5 RZ certificate. Thanks for the tip, OP!

Got the t-shirt edition for $30 without the text -- the manager was more than happy to adjust the price. Then, he gave me a huge MW2 poster. I don't even play MW2.
Best Buy is awesome!

Sweet, got the text and picked up the MW2 shirt pack! The shirt says XL, but its actually more of a Large or smaller...it actually somewhat fits, though I am not sure if I would wear it anywhere lol. I don't care for the logos on the sleeve, but 12 months live at $29.99 plus a shirt to boot is pretty sweet.

Hope my local BB gets the MW2 Live pack. If not I'll wait for another holiday Live deal. I really don't have the 30 right now but for a Tshirt I'm a sucker.
Amazon will eventually run a $30 or someone else...right...

The Best Buy on Colerain in Cincinnati did this deal for the MW2 pack without a hitch. No manager was needed, the cashier just entered the SKU at the POS, looked up my RZ account and the $20 was deducted. I don't want the shirt, but I figured why not get it and give it to someone.

I couldn't find the MW2 T-Shirt one, but grabbed one that came with a code for a free download of Joust. I forgot how much I suck at Joust but it's fun to play for nostalgia's sake.

It's not limited to anyone really, as long as you sign-up for Reward Zone Membership (WHICH IS FREE) and text the code to yourself. Unless you can't drive/bus it to your local Best Buy, I don't see the issue...

Thanks OP. Worked out great getting the MW2 shirt bundle at the Aiea, HI store. My sales clerk was really cool about it too. I mentioned the text and she entered it with no hassles, even made a comment saying that they always seem to find out about their own deals from their shoppers.

The bastards at the Farmington Hills, MI store refused to accept the text coupon.
I grabbed a regular 12 month card and went to the register. I told the cashier about the offer and pulled out my phone to show her the text message. She said she had never heard of it and called a manager over. The manager said that store does not accept those text message offers and refused to tell me why.

Yep me and my friend each bought 2 Bundle w/ T shirt pack using the same card just different transaction. At first the cashier asked the manager if she had heard about it then the manager just told her to put in the SKU # and Bam works like a charm. Thanks for the deal!

That's the sort of thing that gets them called WorstBuy. Let us know what their response is.
The last time (and only time) the cashier refused to enter the coupon was at Safeway. Another coworker also refused to try too. I was bewildered and was surprised that they wouldn't just try it to see what the computer says. If the computer rejected it, that would be understandable. (It was an official Safeway exclusive printed coupon from their registers too and was not expired.)
So I went to the Safeway at the next town and it worked like a charm.

I picked one up, could have tried to get the one with the t-shirt but I doubt I would have worn it. I had just used my last one month card, so this was an awesome deal. Even better than the 12 + 1 month free for $38 of amazon last year when I renewed.
Thanks OP!

Texted it last night around 10 but never got it. Texted it again this morning around 9 and got the text for it around 2.
Went to BB and showed the customer service people and told me just to show it when I check out at the register.
Just make sure they scan/input ur reward zone info first then do the SKU from text message and then scan the xbox live card. Worked like a charm, thnk op.

I printed the text message from the OP from BBY and had no problems (I don't own a phone). Don't even need to have our RZ card on you (I never have it on me), just as long as you belong to the program with your phone number attached to your RZ account. Very painless process.

Same here ... picked up the COD:MW2 T-shirt/Live card box, went to checkout and explained about the RZ text promotion ... the cashier said, "I'm not sure that'll work, but let me try that number." She punched in the SKU, and it rang up fine ... $29.99, no tax.
