I just got off the phone with a customer who claims other players can knock him out of games on Xbox Live.

I would automatically call bullshit because the other player would need administrator access to Xbox Live servers, but I don't own a Xbox360.

So... real or bullshit?

Some games where the player hosting the game will have an option to boot people from their game... so yes for some games it is possible to boot someone from your game.

Or if it's Halo 3, and you team kill, it gives the victim the option of booting.

Will it knock them completely off of Xbox Live or just out of the game or is that the same thing?

Off the game match only, he would be booted to the main menu of the game he was playing, nothing more.

I remember a story where somebody got banned from live cause they were playing a pirated copy of the game or something. Anybody remember that story?

Definitely real. There is software that can boot others off of XBL for however long you feel like keeping them off. There are different programs that do it several different ways (Google it). In short...don't piss off high ranking players in Halo 3 that seem to have little/no skill...that's the biggest red flag. They can steal your gamertag in 5 minutes or boot you off XBL whenever they want. Like I said, Google or the Kotaku archives can fill you in on the "how". It's scary.

Google had nothing unless "glitching" isn't the right search term. I guess I can look through Kotaku, but aren't they deemed unreliable?

Somebody???? Try somebodies. Microsoft came down with a hammer on these people. The last count I saw was at 1,000,000 plus people being banned.

I remember an IP tracker of some sort in Halo 2. You could easily lag the game, kick other people, actually, anyone you wanted, etc, long as you were host. I don't know if they work in newer games though, but yes, it's out there, and fairly easily unfortunately.

You are correct.

I actually meant to say, he was playing on LIVE with somebody that works for live or microsoft. The guy got his IP and everything and boom. Kicked him right off.

Huh? Not sure where you're getting that from. Kotaku is probably the most reliable (i.e. non-payola) gaming news site out there.

Anyway, to help narrow the search...The big story that I remember was about people stealing the gamertags of top Halo 3 players to get rare armor that was given out by Bungie from time to time. In the subsequent articles it was revealed these people were also using custom programs to boot opponents so they could rack up huge stats. This was from Feb/Mar 2008 IIRC. Instead of "glitching", try searching for standby(-ing), and bridging.

Yes MSFT Live enforcement can do that and they routinely play games looking for poor behavior but they usually will warn the other party first.

I was watching 12 year old cousin play some halo 3, never played it myself. While he was playing he kept getting kicked and then other people would drop from games. I just kept hearing these little kids yammering over their mics about people "glitching". They were using that term to mean: "that guy is kicking me out of the game without any reason". I took it to mean someone had some hacked console or a mod something or other.

"Glitching" has for many years always meant to me that you were exploiting some small facet of the game to do things the designers didn't intend for you to. (Squeezing through the ceiling to run around and snipe people on the "roof" of the map for instance).

This thread has more mis-information in one place than I even care to try and take the time and correct everyone.

I'm pretty sure there are some games that allow player's/hosts to kick other people in the game so it really all depends on the game.

Well please, take the time and correct it then so we can prosper and learn!! ;)

Whether this information would be helpful or not is debatable.

What is happening is the host blocks your IP temporarily causing artificial lag. (just enough, so you will lag, but not get kicked) Now to make this useable in teamplay, the host collects the IP's for his or her friends prior to a match via netstat since his or her console is sharing an internet connection through adhoc or ICS (it could be a laptop or desktop). When the need arises to win. Host simply blocks all unknown IP's temporarily on his laptop or desktop. Granting a lag free experience to his or her buddies where the pubbies get raped since they are lagging out.

Cliff notes:

Play with people you know
Play on a Peer to Peer based game and you're asking for it.
