Hey guys i have a belkin f5d 7234-4 v4 wireless router...It lets me play online and such but the problem is im always on nat3. I've looked up port forwarding and found the correct ports, enabled them on my router (and also windows firewall), but the system still post a nat3 message, so...is the problem with the router or user error? :) Also any wireless routers you can recommend?

I don't know if your router has an option to enable DMZ. If it does assign a static IP to your PS3, and enable DMZ on that IP.

Its capable of DMZ, now...how would i assign a static ip to the ps3?

hmm that depends on your router, try googling about it? or you can just simply check your PS3 IP and just enable DMZ for it. If it happens to change later just do the DMZ again lol.

Pick an IP address in the subnet which you are using for DHCP, yet is not in your DHCP range. Use that address for your "manually" assigned PS3 address. If you do not know, but need the other information, do a "ipconfig /all" from your Windows command prompt or "ifconfig /a" from a linux box.

If you need more than that, Google is your best friend.

Just so you know OP, I had a lesser version of that router for a while. Worst router I've EVER owned (and believe me, I've had a lot. I'm a tech geek and an early adopter). The router I had had a LOT of issues with port forwarding and DMZ. The DMZ never actually worked properly, and that was something that was complained about a lot on a wireless forum I frequent. The port forwarding was sketchy. When it worked, it was fine. The trick was getting it to work. I hope that you can get it to work better than I was able to.

I personally finally gave up on the router, as I was never able to get it to work to my satisfaction, and moved on to a Linksys WRT54G2 that I put DD-WRT on. I've since moved on to a NETGEAR WNDR3700, which is easily the nicest router I've ever used.

I have assigned my ps3 its own ip address through the xmb and also put the range in the router...On the ps3 it goes through all the tests and says successful but still gives the nat3.
And today at least, google hasnt been a good friend so so far.

So far ive tried DMZ, port forwarding on the router, and port forwarding on windows firewall with no luck. Been spending almost an hour trying to figure this out and in the process im quickly learning about wireless networking which i guess is good but still frustrating since im havent made any progress. The router you have looks nice btw, but a bit out of my budget. Im looking for something more in the $50 range. Oh, and something that actually does port forwarding instead of just showing it on the setup menu too. :)

If you're also using a modem. Do port forward on it for your router ip (not your PS3 IP) because your router is the only thing visible to your Modem.

Yeah, my router is a bit out of the normal price range for most. Also, it would be overkill for most people as well. I'd recommend doing a full reset of the router, back to factory defaults, and then trying it all again. That sometimes fixed things for me.

If he's on any sort of decent modem, there should be no need for that, as it'll just let the router handle everything.

whats the deal with this whole nat thing. id never heard or seen it until i tried playing uncharted 2 one day and i told me i had an unrecognizable inernet connection and told me to do an internet test. it mentioned that the game worked with nat 1, 2 and 3 types and mine showed up after the test as nat 2 but this was the only game whose mp ever demanded i do an internet connection test.

This explains what it is pretty well: http://www.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm

Basically though, what NAT allows you to do is have multiple, local IP addresses (so, all the computers on your network), map to one IP that everyone can see. Granted, that is a very large over-simplification, and ignores a lot, but that's a general way for you to think about it. It's important because there are a finite number of IP addresses in the IPv4 range, and we're running out with all the people running their own networks, etc.

thanks for the explanation and the link that clears up a few things.

Alright I rebooted the router to factory settings and started all over...with the same results.

When a router asks for the ip address when port forwarding, is it not the ip address the ps3 displays in the Network Settings column?

Yep, the IP of the PS3 is the one that you should be giving it.
