Too bad I am getting the new PStwo. And I don't like Final Fantasy. Thanks though.

Besides using the drive for FFXI, using it to put games on it with HDLoader, and using it for memory card space, what other use does it have on a PS2?

Not much. Sony proves they are not going to support it anymore by having it be not compatible with the pstwo.

ESPN NBA 2K5 allows you to save directly to the HDD, bypassing the memory card completely.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think I read that you can save all your games to the HDD doing away with the need for memory cards entirely. I also think you can use it with SOCOM II to reduce your load times.

You can watch video highlights on ESPN NFL 2K5 instead of still pictures on the halftime shows.

Makes me think that they built NFL 2K5 & NBA 2K5 on the XBox first and then ripped out that functionality in the PS2 version, unless they see the hard drive running on the PS2.

RE Outbreak also plays much better IMO if you have the HDD...

Yeah I saw that deal. Still pretty expensive considering Sony will no longer be supporing it. I will probably get one though. I want to trade in my PS2 for a PStwo but I had mine chipped with a very, very, very expensive chip to play imports so I'd rather just buy the HDD.

My local EB has a used FFXI/HD for $54.99 used.

^^
The FFXI in that will not work though. The access keys will be used to create the account for the original owner. You would also have to buy the PC game to get new access keys.

They did build NFL 2k5 on xbox and rip it down for ps2.... just like ea make all their stuff on ps2 and ports it over to xbox....

Sony assumes anyone intersted in the HDD already has a regular PS2, So the price drops are to get any of the millions of people who dont have it to buy it.
Also it dosent exactly mean support will drop off (not like it was insanely pervasive to begin with of course) it just means you wont be able to use HDD functionality with this version of the system. Things like replays and saving game content will just be reserved for people with HDD capacity.
It's not like not having it will make RE:outbreak impossible just not as quick for PStwo owners.

You pretty much still need memory cards... unless the game supports direct HDD access, and unfortunately most games don't. FFXI is worth it IMHO.
