Hey has anyone ever worked at one of these two places? What is the pay like? Any thoughts from anyone?

I always thought it was cool that Borders celebrates Banned Book week. Its rare that a big corporation will attempt to promote something that may not necessarily welcome to society at large.

Gamestop and BN are affiliated, I've noticed that Gamestops are more dimly lit than EB's, and Borders are more bright than BN, you may be on to something.

B&N's parent also owned the Software Etc. chain which merged/ate (I've forgotten which) FuncoLand and the combined beast became GameStop. Back in the early 90's there were several B&N locations in this region that had a Software Etc. within the store.

A major difference between the two for prospective employees is the dress code. B&N expects reasonably businesslike attire while Border's employees often appear to have just escaped a weeklong hostage drama. If the money is the same this could be a deciding factor for you.

Didn't it used to be if you worked at a B&N then you got a discount at Gamestop and vice versa? Did they do away with that perk?

Cool thanks for all the answers. Anyone have any idea on salary? I am not sure what the going rate for retail now a days is. Or does anyone know a retail place that pays well?

You young people have no idea what you have. I'm in my early thirties. When I was a kid, all we had was super lame ass Waldenbooks at the mall!!!
Borders and Barnes-N-Nobles are great by comparsion.

I had to settle for B Dalton bookstores when I was a kid. Talk about a crappy selection compared to what's out there now.

What sad is the majority of people these days would prefer to work at the place with the overly-casual dress code as opposed to working at a place that looks professional.

Those bastards killed Funcoland. I liked them while it lasted. Man, corporate America is a bitch

What's wrong with wanting to dress casual? As far as the job is concerned, a friend of mine worked at B&N and hated because people were such inconsiderate asses and just left books all over the place.

I used to have a teacher that worked at Border's. He loved it. he said the atmosphere was really relaxed normally and wasn't too bad. He only said that once the holiday season arrives, you're better packing your bags with how many people show up.

My mom works at Barnes and Noble and she wears jeans about a couple of times a week to work. Also, they do still get a small discount at Gamestop ( I think you get games for about $40.00, which is better than my Best Buy Employee discount on games  ). Also, they get 30% off books/mags and 50% off cafe items.
