View Full Version : New Redesigned PS2 @ Walmart NOW! (HUGE YMMV)

Not a sale but rather a bit of information. I was at my local Walmart this morning and happened to notice that they had the new PS2's in stock. The boxes caught my eye because they are white and have a picture of the new, ultra-sleek PS2 on them. I would have grabbed one but considering that I just recently replaced my launch PS2, I honestly had no need for this new unit, regardless of the slick new design.
However, this being Walmart, it could be that they have the new console locked out of the computer system until the actual street date, something I have experienced before. Still, it might be worth your time to try and see if they will sell you one, especially considering the actual release date is early November.
This particular Walmart is located in Hemet, CA. about two hours east of Los Angeles.
Best wishes and happy hunting.

Does the new PS2 touch you in your special place? If not, I really can't see any reason to purchase one if you already have a PS2. Unless of course you live in an incredibly small place and that regular ps2 is just too gigantic.

You probably could have bought one and sold it for like double on Ebay if you hurried.

I pretty much feel the same way but quite a few people I've talked to are anxious to get one of these new systems.
The top-loading aspect should make it easier to play imports however, assuming somebody develops a disc similar to the Cube import discs.

I thought that might be the case.
Never hurts to try though.

Never though of that...playing imports are important to me, especially on the PS2 since there are so many games that never made it over here. Plus I have a few imported PS1 games. But FFXI is also important to me - I've been gearing up my PS2 purchase for about a year now, stocking up on games and accessories. I have around 40 games waiting for me to play. I also have a Netplay controller for FFXI, don't know what other non-HD games would be compatable with it. Monster Hunter maybe?

What is the point of this NEW PS2? It's just smaller, right....it doesn't roll over or do tricks, does it?
People that are buying them, do you already own a PS2 or is this your first?

People that are buying them, do you already own a PS2 or is this your first?Well I own a PS2. But I was about to buy a network adapter for it. Now I'm gonna just trade mine to EB and pay $50 to get the new model. In my opinion it makes sense to get it if you were about to buy a net adapter anyway... the $10 extra (beyond the retail price of the net adapter) is definitely worth having a fresh, brand new, tiny PS2.

I think the real point is that despite the raving ps2 fanboys ever present in association with the slim and trim playstation, this has nothing to do with cheap ass deals.

I too lack a Network Adapter and wouldn't mind one of these new models, since I've got a launch PS2 which takes a year and a half to read a disc...

PS2 HW and PS2 games - up to $150 trade-in value Expires 10/30/2004
Trade-in a working PO-PS2 SYSTEM ALL and 1 to 5 pre-played PS2 games and receive up to $150.00 in trade-in credit. System trade-in value is $100 and each game value is $10. Game boxes and instructions are required. May not be combined with any other offer or discount. Limit of 5 trades per customer. See sales associate for complete details. Customer may be responsible for sales tax. Game must be in working condition.

i've got a near launch ps2 & a broken xbox that i plan to swap at eb for the new ps2. the old girl is startin to act a bit flakey so that's the main reason for getting the new one. the built in network adapter is a bonus (and having a ps2 that's not much bigger than a dvd case is kinda cool) but i wouldn't be getting one if my old one worked fine.

Is this the one in the University Mall? Cause I was going to go there to check stuff out and maybe pick up some stuff. For some odd reason I'm closer to that than any of my classes...

I think it bares keeping in mind with the advent of the system in stores now:
-It has the Network adaptor built in but only the ethernet (no phone jack=no 56k)
-Anyone with an original PS2 that isnt reading disks can usually get it repaired by sony for nothing more than the cost of mailing it to them as long as you call them first.
-The new system is IDEAL for travel, I took my system to california a few months ago and it was heavy as hell to carry around in my luggage.

The new PS2 doesn't support the hard drive, hence, no HD Loader.

iif you are like me and have to keep sending your ps2 in for dres for sony to fix, then the new ps2 is totally worth it.

I just picked one up at my local TRU. I looked quick, and I saw about 2~3 left in the glass case behind the cashier.
It has been reported that this PS2 also supports 480p DVD progressive scan and has the IR receiver built-in for the PS2 remote, just like it's half-brother, the PS2+ system.
Now I gotta hunt down a frisbee...er, I mean, vertical stand. :)

Mildly off-topic, but PS2 related...Do you have SMT: Nocturne in yet? :P
Walmart on Wendover in Greensboro, NC has the new PS2's out for sale, cause I saw some people buying some, and they had a ton of them in the glass cases. They are marked an even $149.00 (plus tax).

My WM today had them too for $149.00, but sold out. I think most TRUs got in around 12 of them(they actually overnighted them...usually with systems TRU doesn't do that...sony must have footed part of the bill). Also, this WM mysteriously had a ton of GBC, N64, and older games in stock. Stuff they haven't had in years. They had the GC Mario Kart with Bonus disc for $25, GBC Zelda Oracle of Ages for $15, Pokemon Blue $10, and a lot of older GC, PS2, and XB games for $10-$15. Is this happening at other WMs?

Yeah, I though that might be them finding a bunch of old stuff in their stock room(even though its surprising if they just found it). Another thing I remember is Freedom Fighters GC for $10.50.

George W is trying to stop N. Korea from importing them for their tactical weapons systems. (though he doesn't say that because he's illiterate).

Can someone please explain to me why a top loader makes it easier to play imports?
Alpha2
10-14-2004, 11:49 PM
It's not confirmed yet but what it theoretically means is you can buy a boot loader disk and all you have to do is fool the system into thinking the door is closed with a tab or paper clip and then remove that disk and replace it with the import disk.
I'd wait untill someone's done it effectivly before I get happy.

Back when I worked in the Electronics department at Wal-Mart, we had a room in the back where we kept all of our small and/or expensive items like games, cameras, etc. The first time I went back there, I flipped at how much old stuff they had - SNES games, Saturn games (and consoles), early titles for the N64 and PS1 (this was '98 or thereabouts) - and all of it ended up being marked down considerably. I bought a hell of a lot of stuff over the next couple of weeks, let me tell you.
