OK, so I'm playing Chrono Trigger and I want to name my time machine "Tardis" after Doctor Who's spaceship. Except I don't have enough letters so I name it "Tards"

Well next day when I wake up, I have to laugh because every time I see that damn ship I'm thinking it's full of retards.

So what are some RPG names you've given, and then later regretted?

And where would a time machine full of retards go?

I've learned my lesson to never rename my characters in RPGs. When playing FFVII I gave my characters the stupidest names. It bugged me so much I had to start the game over. Though I believe there is an item that allows you to change your name. In FF III I named some of my characters Windorf and shadow.

In FF7 I named Cloud McCloud, after the Highlander. After beating the game, I realised he isn't nearly cool enough to carry that name, but Sepheroth on the other hand.... hmmmm, when are they gonna give that guy a game, he's farking insane.

I named the time machine... Nipok.

No it wasn't anything racial, it was named after a certain milk squirting body part. Yeah me and my friends have a strange sense of humor.

i name cloud "goku" when i was into DBZ(this was around the release of the game, i got the system just for it)

i beat the game and then got sick of the name so i replayed it with all the original names

in FFVII i tried to name Tifa Angel, but i guess i was tired or something, and i put in Angle. I noticed my mistake when my friends say it and said, "Why the hell you name her Angle?" Not a huge mistake, but playing an entire game with a damn math name was a little corny.

I also learned not to rename people, but for a different reason. When reading walkthroughs or guides of any sort, i have no idea who they are talking about. This was really bad when i was playing FF6 with it's 20 or so characters.

I can't say I have regretted my choice of names, but the closest I came
was back when SNES was the system, I got Romance of the three kingdoms.
I would name all the custom made generals like pooface , and weesniffer, and juvenile names. I thought it was so funny to see Weesniffer take over provinces and collect taxes. It made the game that much more fun.

I always name my rpg guys funny names, just because i cant stand naming them something that is suppose to sound cool but inevitably ends up sounding more stupid then if I had picked a stupid name on purpose. /run on sentence
:P

I never rename characters. If they have no name and you have to give them one I name them either Zak (that was for some reason what i named the main character in SoM, so i kept using it) or Dekar, because Dekar was like the coolest character ever and such a badass, someone say what game he is from.

If my memory is correct, Lufia or Lufia II?

One of the first people to achieve Jedi status in SW:Galaxies named his character Pudu. He thought he was going to create a new character when he opened the Jedi slot, so he simply didn't mind calling his character that. After unlocking Jedi though, he had grown too attached to Pudu and made him a Jedi. He's still playing to this day under that character from what I know.

Playing Final Fantasy 6 I once named all of my characters after the cast of Married with Children. I guess this is off topic because I didn't regret it one bit...

Unless you mean the Japaneese FFIII, which I never played, so wouldnt know. :)

So you can imagine my surprise when I ended up with two characters named Shadow. :?

If I was just trying out an RPG with no intention of saving, I usually named my main character "SEX!!!11"

Haha, I rule.

In FF1 for NES, my four characters' names were:
Dom (my name, fighter)
Pow (martial artist)
Wow (thief)
Zap (Black mage)

I think there was a four letter restriction, and I was probably like 8 years old at the time, but they're pretty lame.

I tend to stick with the defaults. If I'm forced to name the main character, and since the offered number of letters is so often five, I almost always go with modifying my own name to Elric in homage to a very influential fantasy series from before the days of Dungeons & Dragons or computer versions thereof.

There's been some pen and paper versions of Moorcock's work but none of the computer or video games promised ever seemed to get done. It would make a great RPG.

I just go with my first name. Using the original names just doesn't make the game feel quite as immersive.

It might be stupid, but it's more fun to imagine yourself killing Jedi scum or catching Pokémon than controlling someone else who you have no emotional attachment to.

Eh, I dunno, I tried that in FF7 and I felt awkward at everyone calling me by my name.

I names the whole FF7 party after South Park characters. Barret was Chef, Cloud was Cartman, Aeris was Wendy, I forget the others, but that was too weird so I started over with the original names.

I pretty much always use the default names, and if there are no default names (like in D&D games) I just use a random name generator until I find one I like.

I always name my guys after people I know. Or my defunct web comic characters. Which is nice because I get to pretend I'm some kind of ass kicking machine when I'm really sitting in my mom's basement eating fritos in a wife-beater at 2 AM.

I've named something stupid for my characters in various games, but I dont think I regret any of them. I've had Mary Poppin' Cherry in Dungeon Siege; all the bad and nasty words you can think of for all FFVI characters; and I've named Link in Link's Awakening as my first name, but then it switched to Thief after I stole from the shop.

Offline RPGs, I usually stick to the defaults.

Online RPGs are another story. I learned my lessonw when playing PSO...no one wants to play with a wizard guy in a dress named AndyRogenus.
