I just watched Psycho for the first time today because I have Film Appreciation class. I watched the Alfred Hitchcock one and wow I can see it wasn't a bad movie at all. I was actually into it the whole time. I never really thought that .....SPOLIERS.... Norman Bates would be acting as him mom also..
Did anyone watch the remake? Would anyone recommend it because I heard it was like the same exact thing..
Thanks

I also saw the film for the first time last year during my film class. I was very surprised that ***SPOILER*** there would be a surprise ending involved, i had no idea. I really enjoyed. I haven't seen the recent version though.

If it was in black and white than you saw the original. The 1998 version was in color.

Even though one is a remake of the other they're not two movies you could easily confuse. That's like saying "I just watched Manchurian Candidate with Frank Sinatra. Is that the one that just came out?"

DO NOT watch the remake by Gus Van Sant. It was allegedly a shot-for-shot remake but Van Sant added in some of his own "ideas" that were just awful. It is definitely not worth your time.

No comparison on the 2 movies. The original blows the remake away in every aspect. I like Vince Vaughn as an actor, but no one can play Norman the way Anthony Perkins did. It's kind of like recasting the role of Spock in Star Trek... can you imagine any actor other than Nimoy playing that role?????
Now the first Psycho sequel was pretty descent. The director was a big Hitchcock fan and you can tell. The third one was a product of the studio meddling with the director, Anthony Perkins. If they would have allowed him to use the script he wanted to, it would have been another good sequel. The fourth one's story was inconsistant with several things but a nice attempt to go back and show us why Norman was the way he was because of the way his mother treated him as a child. Perkins was working on a 5th one when he died.
I'll add one more thing before I quit rambling... Anthony Perkins' widow died on one of the planes that struck the WTC on 9/11.

I agree with this guy. Psycho 1 and 2 were both good movies. Psycho 3 was dissapointing. I did not see Psycho 4.

I haven't seen the second one, but I've been on a major Hitchcock kick of late. Definitely check out The Birds if you've never seen it - it is AWESOME.

The remake sucks. Stay away, but I do recommend the sequels to the original Psycho.

The orginal Psyco was great. I haven't seen it in years though. Maybe some channel will show it on Halloween.

I can't help but feel like the Birds was a let down. Sure it was back in the early days of horror/thriller films, but jesus christ, Al... birds?
The only scary part was during the trailer, where he introduces his new film, the bird in the cage bites him, and that woman runs in through the door screaming "THEY'RE COMING!"
Aside from that I thought it was just made for a quick dollar. Not much else you need to do that go out to a wildlife reserve and film birds....

I agree with all of you...the original is by far the superior version. I wouldn't waste my time with the remake. You're better off watching some other Hitch movies like "The Birds" or "Rear Window".

The thing I love about the The Birds is the idea, if one species of animal suddenly decided one day, let's fucking kill the human race, organized and set out to do it, what would be the outcome?
It's just so creepy that something that seems like all your lives to not be that big of a threat can one day just decide to kill us.

The first scene that comes into my head from the Birds is when the city has been overrun by them but everything is so unnervingly calm. There are like 50 birds on top of various swings and jungle gyms just watching the school kids go by. That scene had me in complete anticipation of what was going to happen. Are the birds going to suddenly attack? Or are they just gonna chill there for a while? Its rare when i get so involved in a film and this film completely got me.

The remake is indeed a shot by shot remake. Very unimaginative. However, he was unable to recreate the feeling of suspense that Hitchcock could get.
Van Zant added in scenes that were completely unnecessary. IMO.
