View Full Version : Urgh. CD-RW problems.

Another stupid hardware problem. = =

I was backing up some files onto a CD using Nero. When I tested to see if it worked, the drive in My Computer showed it as a coaster (0 bytes used, 0 bytes total).

"Weird," I thought to myself. Being the curious guy I am, I tried putting in an older CD of backed up documents. The same thing happened, even though I KNOW the CD was NOT a coaster.

This really sparked my interest. I then put in a game that Autoplays in my drive. That was marked as a coaster also. NOW I was angry.

Anyone have any idea what's wrong?

The model of my CD-RW is HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8481B, it came with my Dell when I bought it.

--------

Long-story short, my CD-RW is recognizing all my CD's as coasters, but thankfully, it at least knows the CD's are there.

Any help?

Have we restarted the computer?

Rofl, yes, several times.

Man, what sucks is that I can't install the drivers because... OMFG they're on the driver CD. -.-

Hey, don't laugh. I get 'no' to that question 95% of the time.

Check its status in Device Manager and make sure there aren't any alerts showing.

You can also try switching the IDE cable that the drive runs on. If it's the same as your hard drive, try moving it to its own cable.

Also try removing it from Windows Device Manager, then restart and see if it gets re-detected.

Barring that, you might be dealing with a drive that has simply died. (read: I am out of ideas beyond this.)

Or you could do a system resotre for a couple of days ago, that sometimes fixes things.

Alright, I'll try those. :)

Hm... I tried those 3, and here's the results.

1) Windows is saying that it's operating just fine, and the Troubleshoot doesn't seem to help.

2) Did that, it was re-detected, still the problem continues.

3) Died? It still detects CDs, it just can't recognize them. That's classified as dead?
