That's because VII is still popular today and was recently rereleased. Plenty of the collectible guides have held decent value over time ... Fallout 3, Mass Effect, etc

Just a note to those who are buying this thinking to hold onto it and resell it down the road for a profit. I can still buy the Final Fantasy VII original guide NEW for around $20. And that is one of the most collectible final fantasy games out there.

and the closest thing to a CE guide FFVII ever had (the Versus Books guide) sells for a lot

if you were talking about the regular edition guide for FFXIII I'd agree

I don't think I've ever seen a game guide sell out in pre-orders, but I'm glad I got mine in before it sold out.

So, I'm buying the :ps3: Final Fantasy XIII version of the game, the :360: faceplate and the Limited Edition Game Guide. I'm also tempted to buy the Super Elite for some reason and the 4-disk Limited Edition Soundtrack.

They probably did with some kind of similar drink in Japan.

Yes, they did in Japan. They had a set of 16 different FFXIII drinks in a collector's case. Some sort of energy drink is what was in them.

Most likely, but it's hard to be 100% certain. A good barometer will be whether they reappear on release day ... if they don't, I'd haul @$$ down to Gamestop or Best Buy and see if you can grab one. I kind of doubt this is going to be a super limited release, as it's a collector's edition, not limited edition, so you should still be able to find one in early March. Of course, that's all speculation on my part from past experience.

That's because VII is still popular today and was recently rereleased. Plenty of the collectible guides have held decent value over time ... Fallout 3, Mass Effect, etcThe Mass Effect 1 CE guide isn't really a CE guide, save the bundled-in artbook. The guide itself in the CE package is just a regular guide, not any different than the non-CE guide. The Mass Effect 2 CE guide, yes, that's a different guide, since it's hardbacked. Same goes for the Fallout 3 CE and Fallout 3 GOTY CE guides, plus others.

If you are just buying the guide for yourself to enjoy, this isnt important. But video game guides are not collectibles in the sense of a collectible item that goes up in value over time.

Guides I own that resell:

Breath of Fire III (+$30)
Breath of Fire IV (+$30)
Dragon Age Origins CE (+$50)
Final Fantasy Anthology (+$50)
Final Fantasy Chronicles (+$25)
Final Fantasy IV DS (+$25)
Xenogears (+$30)

That's just from looking at the first half of my top shelf, and throwing in 'Gears for good measure. I can go on, if you'd like.

I'm not sure if this will come sealed from Amazon. My Mass Effect CE Guide didn't come sealed (although it came in perfect condition), but then again that's a different guide altogether. That's my only experience buying guides from them.

I honestly didn't even know 90% of the guides they've made existed... Only one I have ever bought/seen from them was the Halo guide. Also, releasing guides to FF games alongside Brady... never knew :/

On pre-orders you can enter gift card codes and what not after placing the order, before it goes to "preparing to ship". Worst case scenario is you have to cancel it when you get home to use any codes. Unless of course you do this at the very last minute where they may start the whole shipping process.

This is the way to go if Amazon is out of stock. Came to $18.89 before getting 10% Bing cashback. I got free shipping using Bing, but my order had to be over $25, so I bought some kids' books for my daughter.

Piggyback makes some fantastic guides. Regarding the comment made earlier about them having released guides alongside Bradygames and company, maybe they just released those in Europe? Maybe EB and GameStop never bothered to carry them in the US? Maybe I just wish I had a few of the hard to find, presumably OOP, guides that they made.

That mini-guide at GameStop... Isn't that supposed to be free with an actual preorder? I wish I had asked the guys at the store 2 nights ago because even the paper quality on the mini-guide was fantastic. I totally want it.

In any case I placed my order with Barnes & Noble and ended up ordering A Hard Day's Night just to bump my order above $25 and I found some coupon that took a few cents more off of the movie so I saved a little more that way. I did end up spending an extra $6 or so because I found some spiffy book from one of the 3rd party sellers and had to jump on that as B&N themselves are selling the same thing for $60 vs the seller for $2.26

*grumble grumble* I forgot to check Bing.

I ordered this after it showed up in my quick picks a few weeks back. The total was $18.28 (19.24 X 0.95 = 18.28). However, when I check the order today it is now showing as $18.89 x .95 = $17.95.

I looked through the thread quickly and didn't see anyone else mention this. I've never had Amazon change the price of an item in an order before (I've only got refunded by the pre-order price guarantee after something ships) so I thought it was a little odd. Did they PM the Barnes and Noble price and adjust my order? Nice to get it a little cheaper even if it is only 33 cents.

Mine dropped to $18.89 (I didn't buy in from my Gold Box.)

How many of you also have purchased the game from Amazon? If you check FFXIII's listing, Amazon now is offering an additional 5% off the guide with game purchase. First it was offered with the LE guide (started yesterday or the day before), and now with the reg. edition since the LE is sold out. Maybe Amazon is applying this discount to anybody with both a game & guide pre-ordered, and not just if you select the Best Value now.

I have the game & guide pre-ordered on two separate orders. And 5% off of $19.24 would be $18.28...Any other thoughts? Really weird... (But I like it!)

Woot, glad I bought this. I have a feeling it will go back in stock, as Final Fantasy is a hugely popular series with massive quantities produced. If I recall, similar hardcover guides like Resident Evil 5 and Dragon Age went out-of-stock prior in pre-order only to be restocked again shortly after release.

Usually making any change to the order (like changing address, shipping speed etc then just changing it back) will cause the order to go to $0.00 and then credit the amount overpaid to your account. You also might be able to just reselect the same shipping option to get it to recalculate, I don't remember. Then you can use it right away instead of waiting until the items ships to get refunded. Don't blow your whole 35 cents too fast though!

I just bit the bullet on Barnes & Noble for $23.85 total with '3 business days or less' shipping. Not TOO bad although missing out on the amazon goldbox really hurt :'(

As a point of interest, I clicked the bing cashback store link but I'm not sure it'll go through or not, because amazon was automatically applying some coupon. It was either the 5% bonus on pre-orders (which bing knows about and advertises), or the 'limited time get amazon member price w/o being a member' or both. So I won't know for a day or two if it'll actually get me any cashback. An extra $1.85 back in my pocket would be nice but I won't hold my breath. Ahh well :P

Yeah, I couldn't wait for amazon to get it back in stock. Sigh. That's what I get for being indecisive. Decided to get it from Walmart's site. It's actually a better deal than Barnes and Nobles (at least for me).
Walmart: $19 + $2 shipping + 6% tax = $22.25 (something like that)
Barnes and Nobles: $18.89 + $3 (pre-order charge) + $.99 (per item shipping cost) + 6% tax = $24 (about that price)
I just thought that I'd mention that for those who were interested. I apologize if it's been mentioned before.

Could be that some sellers ship worldwide and others don't. I find that international buyers typically help bid an item up and/or pay a premium relative to US buyers.

I'm really tempted to get this. I just received my $20 GC for pre-ordering BFBC2 on Amazon and plan to put that towards FFXIII. Thing is, if I get the guide it's like I'm buying the game at full price...or like I'm getting the guide for free...depending on ones perspective.

Is this hard cover guide really worth it? Are there any pics of the quality of what's inside? Also, my guess is that this guide will only be valuable in the future depending on how great FFXIII is. Based on some reviews...it's not near the greatness of FFVII....great...but not legendary.

The FF fanbase is really quite jaded and the popular installments from FFVI - FFX, while very different from each other, had much more in common then FF12 and FF13 -- who are both quite wild compared to the older installments (hence the large amount hatred towards them, even though they are brilliant).

So no, I don't see this guide becoming valuable in the future, even if it may very well be the nicest yet.

There are some pictures from the Gamestop mini guide preview that they are handing out with pre-orders, forgot where I found them but they are online somewhere. Looks nice though.

Relax man, I didn't mean to ripple the waters with that statement...it's just that it most likely not be as high a caliber game as FFVII...I mentioned the game is getting great reviews and the game itself will be great and completely worthwhile. Just not on the same level Squaresoft made with FFVII. Based on this...it's the the outlook I have to think about if this guide will be worth getting in terms of future value gain. That's all.

If you're already assuming a game you haven't played isn't going to as great as your current favorite -- well, that's not exactly being open-minded is it?

Some of you people, meaning you and Vortexk, need to go back and take a reading comprehension course...at the remedial level.

As I stated...based on some current reviews. I didn't say anything about my opinion...ever. I've seen a massive chunk of playthrough/walkthrough videos, and the game itself is great...but as a FF fan since the first, this one does seem to be missing some aspects that are typical to the FF series (and RPG's as a whole..NOW I'm stating my opinion...even though I'm still getting the game)...I don't think I need to mention what these aspects are since you guys are apparent mind-readers.

From what I've seen in comparison shots and video, the differences are rather minor. The PS3 does have better lighting (minor) and slightly better textures applied. 360 owners will miss nothing and not notice any major differences worthwhile mentioning...other than the disc swaps, which is really the only major difference worth mentioning.

Did I ever post MY opinion? Once again... in caps so it will get into your thick skull...I SAID BASED ON SOME REVIEWS. Those reviews are NOT my opinion....they are the opinions of others.

Not until you posted did I mention my opinion...nor did I ever say anything bad about the game for you to jump on my back like a wild capuchin monkey.

Have I played it? I never said I did...nor did I ever say I based any opinions of mine for lack of personal gameplay. What I said was simply that this game is not being received into the same legendary status based on current reviews as FFVII. And I mentioned that in regards to how valuable the guide will be in the future based on this. Not about how great or awful the game will be. In fact...I did mention the game being great (from the many playthrough videos I've seen).

Next time I'll try and lower my IQ and pretend as if I'm speaking to a 5 year old when I ask a simple question here so as to avoid someone soiling their diapers when they read my comment.

Sounds like someone needs a timeout....Let's get back on topic before this becomes something bigger.

Anyways, I was on 2 day free prime shipping but REALLY want to hit the game running with the guide on Tuesday so I'm guessing if I switch to 1 day shipping it will probably ship with game (which I also got on amazon with free release day shipping)? Right now 1 day shipping on the CE guide is saying an estimated day of march 10th but anyone have insight from past experience with other guides if they ship the guide out early?

Mainly just wondering if the 3.99 1 day shipping price is actually worth it or not.

It's easy to misinterpret people as defensive FF fans being as they are so common, but I hope you understand I was just trying to advise you to keep an open mind instead of implying expectations based on the reception of a game that came out a decade ago.

So yeah, it's all good. Hope you enjoy the game.

And not to start another argument or pour salt on anyone's wounds, but the apparently extreme linearity of the early game I think will be a good indicator that no the guide isn't going to be necessary right away. Personally I usually don't use one when playing, atleast not the first time(other than sidequest crap), but this probably won't be a game where anyone needs it right away. If you have the patience I vote to wait for regular prime shipping. Hey maybe we get lucky and they send it out the day before release(like all of my 2day ship games) so it gets here only one day after.

I mean, 4 bucks more to get it like 1 day earlier? That's a 20% increase on the guide's cost

I hear ya. Personally...this guide, for me, is about the quality and artwork involved (granted...its price value increase in the future is also another big factor). But even if it doesn't garner "collector's status", just the fact it's designed aesthetically well is a good reason for me to buy one...still debating.

Sure, but remember to watch out what chests you loot and/or don't loot because it could stop you from getting an ultimate weapon (looks at you Final Fantasy 12).

I'm only buying because since FF is such a big series(not my favorite games, but I like them) I enjoy getting the guides. Of course I only have the easier to get guides, 7,8,9,10,10-2(limited edition, cry for me) and 12. They're mostly nice, large, cool maps and pictures and whatnot. I mean that's true for most but I find it fun to collect for this series and with no CE coming to the states, of which I wanted, this is a consolation.

Let me clarify the question before it gets too off base. I'm not asking on if I need the guide to complete the game (I'm getting the guide mainly for collection and artwork and usually like to start the game with everything before hand). I'm asking if the 3.99 (which I don't mind paying since the CE guide is now incredibly cheap) more or less increase my chances of the guide arriving on release day.

Thanks.

Vortextk
03-03-2010, 03:59 AM
Does it increase your chance? Of course. Is it 100%? No. And for most items, I don't think 1day shipping translates to release day delivery. Unless they ship it out the day before, which they would do for all orders anyway, you're not getting it till after release.

For those on the fence about buying this guide, I can vouch that Piggyback is definitely the best guide maker out there. I bought the RE5 CE guide at launch and was impressed by how seriously meticulous and good looking the layout and overall content of the guide was. Paper quality is excellent.

And now the CAG portion of my post, buying from Barnes and Noble is cheaper than buying from Wal-Mart, if anyone cares. They're running a special promotion now where everyone gets Members pricing. Also, Bing Cashback is 10%.

Finally, since I'm assuming people will fill there orders with another item to get free shipping on orders over $25, here's a code for 20% off that item: U7H3H9K. It's actually supposed to take 20% off the higher priced item, but since FFXIII CE Guide is a preorder, it doesn't count. Note: New accounts only, so make a new account. Coupon code expires March 8, 2010.

Got FFXIII CE Guide and manga normally priced $9.99 elsewhere for $28.62, before Bing Cashback :D

Yeah, as someone above said, I just clicked the tab that says "Cashback Stores" and found Barnes and Noble under the "B" list. Barnes and Noble has a set rate at 10%, so you don't have to go around searching for it like you have to for eBay Bing Cashback. Just find their name and click "Go to Store"

And yes, I meant I got an unrelated manga for cheaper, not FFXIII manga XD Glad to see people are enjoying the code, first time helping out fellow CAGs after benefiting so much from the deals on here :bouncy:

Anyway, went with Overstock.com, couldn't find something I wanted for $6 on B&N. Lots of books I want, but more expensive and I'm trying to freeze spending after FFXIII. Ended up $22 shipped, hoping bing ends up giving me the $1.90 back.

I'm thinking of cancelling my preorder. This will never be used as a strategy guide and I just know i'm probably going to end up trading the game later. I know I have it cheap, but its just going to sit on my shelf like my FFXII CE guide doing nothing.

I thought Piggyback made the FFXII CE guide too. At least, there's a really nice video of one up on their website. To clear up some confusion there were two CE Final Fantasy XII strategy guides. One was the official Brady Games guide that came with the regular strategy guide stuck in a cardboard case that showed the judges from the game on the cover. It also included a short artbook. It's not a very impressive set to be honest since the strategy guide is the exact same one as the regular one you could buy.

The Piggyback one was hardcover and I am not sure if that was sold in the US normally or if it was an import. I never knew about it until years later and no one was selling it new. From what I see in the video that one looks much nicer so between that and the excellent job they did with the MGS4 LE guide, I think the FFXIII CE guide should be pretty nice.

I was debating too about getting this guide a couple days ago. In the end the quality of what I've seen so far makes it really worth it. Not to mention it's for the first next-gen FF game. I say keep it...but it's your decision either way.

RE 5 wasn't individually numbered though. I bought one off Amazon when they first had it for $18 and then another one sealed at Gamestop for $10 + tax after a year. It was never really rare, but this FFXIII is already sold out on Amazon and Barnes and Noble

It just doesn't look like this guide will be as "limited" as I thought at first; I mean, WM still has it and BBs all over are getting it (and on top of that are offering $10 OFF if you buy it with the game).

Thoughts?

Hey, just wanted to mention this to anyone that pre-ordered the hardcover guide via Barnes & Nobles...some people on various forums have mentioned they've received an email from B&N for a refund to their order. Don't know if they maybe sold more than were allotted to them, but you may want to check your emails.

On a side note...I just pre-ordered mine from Walmart online to be safe. Total was $22.66 after shipping and tax.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll be checking. Kinda gave me a scare when I read this, but no email yet so hopefully I'm ok (I did mine last week). :cold:

A big thank you to those who bumped this thread. After reading the comments in the Best Buy ad thread for next week, I thought I had waited too late and was going to have to buy this from Gamestop for $31.50 plus tax. Just placed my order on Walmart.com (A Friday or Monday delivery is better than Overstock.com's 2-15 day shipping.)

I think it might go rare simply because its out on 2 systems for the first time. So now more people have reason to buy it, and not everyone who buys a CE is a hardcore gamer, some casual ones as well. You snooze you lose on this one. I'm getting mine at BB after a TRU GC Price match.

500 bonus points
$13 GC or $13 off purchase
$10 off CE guide
$70 + bucks of Gamer Zone points.

Yeah im also pretty sure this will come back in stock. There are other options im considering just in case it doesn't.

1- Borders also has it available on its website. Even though it says 'online only' right now, it will likely make it to stores when it is officially released. Borders always has 30% off coupons and the occasional 40% coupon for in store purchases.

2- The regular guide is now $13.50 on amazon. Thats a very attractive price and i believe the only thing you sacrifice is 16 pages of backstory+art and a hardcover. I may actually go for this instead.

Then again, i still have my FF7 guide from versus books. It is 15yrs old now and i am kinda wishing it was a hardcover ;)

edit: The collectors edition says it uses 100# paper and i believe the standard could be printed on 115gsm which is roughly 80#. Someone correct me if im wrong.

So perhaps we'll be getting the guide on Tuesday (2 day shipping)?

Possible but doubtful. They always prepare 2 day shipping items earlier than a release date item because it takes them longer to ship out the 2-day item. Even though they're preparing it today, it will probably ship Monday night at the earliest. However, a copy of the game with release date delivery will be prepared and shipped Monday night really fast and use Fed-Ex express overnight shipping. The 2-day items use UPS.

Still says shipping soon for me with an estimate of the 11th :\

Who knows, it might actually ship with the game and get here the 9th. BTW Amazon, ship the game already!

I know, right?

I'm more worried about the game then this guide. Gah, I wish they had shipped it on Saturday or something. That must mean they use over night shipping on all these RDD games right? Friend of mine got Bioshock 2 with RDD and said it didn't arrive 'till 7 pm. What the hell am I suppose to do until 7 pm after school?!?

anyone know the mail carrier that Amazon uses for their RDD shipping?
