It was supposed to be a consumer advocate group focused on gaming, primarily, but a bunch of stupid greedy CAGs signed up for the sole purpose of grossly exploiting a promotion they had arranged with Amazon, without any actual interest in the group. Things completely went to hell from there, for all parties.
Don't get me wrong, the ECA severely fucked up and the organization is pretty shitty, but to be fair, I think it should be understood that the CAGs who were only there to exploit the system weren't exactly angels, either.

A great organization that found it in their hearts to give free memberships and 10% off Amazon codes, whom I will be eternally grateful to.

Well ECA left the door open to that abuse. Plus it was posted at SD too and that usually doesn't bode well for any "freebie".
I think both parties failed at the 10% offer, especially not able to assign it by account.... which could be a failure of either ECA or Amazon, who knows.
But one truth is that ECA did fail so much so to support those that wanted to quit.

Just don't join the ECA ever. EVER, and digg up the 5000+ post thread or something of the drama I don't think it should be discussed again.

The drama was so weak compared to how much money they saved me.

That's the issue, though. Many greedy folks ruined it for others, however they treated ALL of their customers as if they were these same scammers. This is exactly what I understood they were fighting against. Now, I want no part of them.

Cliff Notes version...
ECA offers its members 10% off games at Amazon (in the form of codes generated for each use), with cost per membership being $20 ($15 for students). ECA head honcho does an interview with Game Informer, and puts a code in for free ECA membership. It goes viral. Someone along the line discovers you can stack multiple Amazon codes from different waves of codes to get 30% off your games. This results in many people creating free accounts, getting codes, canceling the account, and repeating to stockpile multiple codes.
As a result from those shenanigans, either Amazon or the ECA terminated their partnership. The ECA decided to stop the create-account/get code/cancel account loop by making the cancel account step needlessly difficult. Option to cancel online was removed. Option to cancel via email was removed. Same story with phone calls. In order to cancel your account, you needed to send a snail-mail letter, with ECA mods suggesting you send it certified to ensure it was actually received.

And then they added the ability to cancel your membership and the auto-renew feature. The End.

I don't see why any of you are mad at them... They did a good thing and it was abused. They should be mad at you.

Yeah, because everyone "abused" the system. Why not make it complicated and change the terms on everyone?
