What's with the underlined letters in the announcement?
Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike and Half-Life) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Portal 2 for shipment this coming holiday season.
Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007's Portal, which won 70 industry achievement awards.

Meh. I wanted the cross over. Portal was ok, but I'm not big on puzzle games so it didn't leave me craving a sequel.

Loved portal, but I rather see Half Life 2: Episode 3. Hopefully they will work on that after Portal 2.

I never played Portal.
Maybe I should try it out sometime.
I don't really care about Episode 3 as I have yet to play any Half Life but I love Portal.

I don't really care about Episode 3 as I have yet to play any Half Life but I love Portal.
Besides the fact that I have played ~1 hour of HL instead of none at all, I completely agree. This was awesome news that I was not expecting at all (well at least not until they updated Portal a week ago).

You guys are missing out! Half Life 2 is one of the best FPS games ever - certainly better than all the war FPS nonsense that keeps getting recycled.

I am not an FPS fan at all. The only reason I even played HL2 was due to everyone saying how awesome it is and wanting to try it (got Orange Box really cheap and just wanted Portal). It's just not for me. ;)

I just think if I were in Valve's position, I wouldn't even want to make Episode 3. Looking at all the condemnation Modern Warfare 2 has gotten from the online community. Some of it was warranted, but a ton of it is just useless whining about how "it's the worst game ever," which isn't even a fair thing to say.
I imagine unless Episode 3 repeats the same feelings HL1/2 did at their inception, it'll be dismissed just as quickly and vindictively, to say nothing of the failure to uphold the entire idea of episodic gaming putting out sequels rapidly. And since Valve is a company focused on pleasing a group of people so hellbent on being self-entitled elitists, they know they've got to deliver. And that's just a difficult proposition to uphold.
So I say bring on Portal 2. It's scary how good it is, and I'm happy to see it show up.

No amount of reasoning can overcome this simple fact: they've spent the last two and a half years on a god damn cliffhanger.
Portal, on the other hand, had an end. Detailed? No. But it was a fucking end. Why fuck with that when you already have a series rather deficient in the "ending" department?
This is not switching horses in the middle of a race. This is riding a horse to the middle of a race, getting off it at top speed, then running back to the start of the race to get on another horse that hasn't even left the gate.
People'd bitch about Episode 3, fuck yeah the would. But ya think those people aren't gonna bitch about Portal jumping the shark and how the sequel ruined it and and and and all that noise?
For the record, Portal jumped the shark some time around the third companion cube avatar, the fifth Portal-themed OTT, and the second cake joke on here.

I think it's a foregone conclusion that people are going to whine about Ep3, no matter how good/polished/awesome/bad/scorpion it is. Whining about Portal 2 remains to be seen, and I don't think it's bad form or taste to give fans a sequel to a game that was very well received.
Blaming it for jumping the shark on the part of fans is silly. C'mon now. Let's remain seated instead of floating off into dumbsville.
The ironic analogue here is to bitch about Starcraft II because WoW usurped it and Diablo as the franchise dujour, but I'm not going to bitch about Blizzard making money, staying in business, and polishing a game that I desperately want.

Nah, that was purely a personal matter. Suffice it to say, I blame them for the speed with which I burned my companion cube.

I feel the same way about it. And the stupid companion cube thing. People really had a hard time burning it. Really? When I heard about it I thought the cube was with you for most of the game or something, but you only have it for like 5 minutes.

If you read the magazine pages, you'd know it takes place HUNDREDS of years after HL2.
