View Full Version : Best Uses of the Wii Remote in Games?

This is a cool question to ponder. We know games where it doesn't work well either due to technical limitations or poor developers, but what games are the creme de le creme in using the Wii remote the best?
I think rail-gun shooters like House of the Dead: Overkill and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles are obvious shoo-ins. So is the Boom Blox franchise that measures how fast you make a throwing motion or flick the Wii remote. Then there's several first-person shooters like The Conduit (despite it being mediocre design-wise) and Call of Duty Modern Warfare: Reflex that makes shooting more enjoyable than dual-analog for some people. Don't forget Endless Ocean that utilizes the pointer in a clever way, No More Heroes that uses subtle motion controls for finish maneuvers, and even the Shaun White games that uses the Wii remote like a snowboard to carve your path to the finish line.
Other notables:
Wii Sports (Resort)
Wario Land: Shake It!
Super Mario Galaxy
World of Goo
Excitebots: Trick Racing
Mario Kart Wii
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
What say my fellow CAGs? What games do you think use the Wii remote well?

It really does, but I was going for creme de le creme.

Because I've never played it and therefore could be way off mark, but it was my understanding that the Wiimote usage (at least as far as motion control goes) in SMG was pretty minimal. Basically some point-and-click scenes when you are travelling between planets shooting stars or something. What's the justification for listing it as a notable?

Subtle pointing to grab onto launch stars, wiggling the Wii remote to spin, pointing at the screen to collect star bits.
Notable to me. If you don't agree so, that's fine. Glad you were respectful about it.

Of course I am. Just because I wrote a list didn't mean I mentioned everything. I wanted to leave some to everyone else!

If that's the case then SMG, Excitebots and Mario Kart don't belong on the list. The Wiimote functionality in SMG is very disposable. Same goes for the other two. Any game that has you turn the Wiimote sideways for a steering wheel isn't revolutionary in any way. It's very imprecise and as evidenced by years of racing games, analogs are perfect for that genre. They are both fun games, but would be just as fun/more fun with analog controls.
I'll agree with Zack & Wiki and toss in Okami. While it was on PS2, the painting brush strokes draws (ha!) you into the game more. I'll give a half a nod to Pikmin and Metroid Prime Trilogy. While the Wiimote works great for both games, it's not markedly better, just a different style, especially since we know how both control with a standard controller.
While I haven't played it on the Wii, I would imagine Ghostbusters would be pretty fun with Wii controls.

It is nowhere near imprecise, and it works wonderfully. They would be boring without motion controls. Sorry. It'd be just another racer.

Could not disagree more. He never said what is the most revolutionary use of the Wii Remote, he said the best.
I don't find it imprecise at all, and as for being just as much or more fun without motion controls, there are only two racing games I like this gen. Excitebots, and Excitbike. I would not play Excitebots at all without motion controls.
I would also disagree on Okami. The painting with the Wii Remote is good, but attacking with it was bad.
edit: SSX Blur's controls seem interesting, I have not played enough of it to know if the controls are good or not though. Steep learning curve.

It seemed really tacked on. Not that I didn't enjoy the game, I just don't think it really qualifies as notable. WarioLand:Shake It made much better use of it.
I think the best use was in Mario Kart. #2 would be Okami.

I've seen Ghostbusters as low as $17.99, generally about $20 now.

WarioWare - Makes even better use of the remote than that other popular party game series (Rayman Raving Rabbids). It's close though.
Yes! The Warioware games are some of my favorites. I'm still hoping to track down a Smooth Moves copy of my own (at a reasonable price)

Agreed on SMG's use of waggle for spinning just seeming tacked on.
Now, when it comes to the Wii Remote, I only really consider it a "good" use if the actions I'm performing with the Remote are analogous to the action I'm trying to perform on screen. An addendum to this is that the game should only really work with the motion/pointer controls, that to use a regular gamepad would just kill the experience.
Now, I don't play my Wii all that often, but with what I have played, I've yet to see a game that uses the Wii Remote better than Wii Sports.

I'd agree with boom blox 1/2, along with okami, metroid, dawn of discovery
also quite a few wiiware games make good use of the wiimote besides goo, such as lost winds 1/2

I'm going to go against popular opinion here and say that I really like the motion controls in Super Mario Galaxy. That game just feels 'right' to me. They may not have been 'necessary', but they did work very well.
Also, Excitetruck is one of my favorite games ever. I can't imagine that it would have been nearly as much fun without the motion controls. It would have completely changed the game. I like Excitebots also, but haven't played it as much. :(

I guess chucking the Wiimote at the Wii doesn't qualify as best use in games =(

Resident Evil 4. This setup is so good, it's practically ruined the controls in every other (non-rail shooting) RE game for me.
I would gladly rebuy every RE game if they were rebuilt with these controls.

I concur with Warioland Shake It. I started playing this a few weeks ago and have really been enjoying it. It's easy, sure, but fun, and going back and getting the achievements is tough when you want a challenge. Good use of the remote. Also, you have to give the highest props to Excitebots Trick Racing when it comes to use of the remote. It's a superb game and makes full use of motion control, and it works great, in fact could only work with motion control. I play it better with a Wii Wheel.
I play it better with a Wii Wheel.
I could never do the spins properly until I started using one, the big B button helped. I don't know why, I just always screwed them up before (in Excite Truck, got the wii wheel bundle for bots so I always had one)

The Force Unleashed was actually pretty good on the Wii, seemed pretty fluid when using the light saber, much better that the 360 and PS3 version.

The lack of The Godfather: Blackhand Edition in this thread is very disapointing. Easily one of the best uses of motion controls on the Wii.
