I thought that play at the plate would discourage the Sox, but suprisingly, Ortiz came back with a 2 run-home-run! I still thank that the Yankees will win, but this is going to be a great ball game...

And it better be, because I'm not going out to eat with my family because I want to watch this game and I need to do homework. Looks like this will be the best playoff series that I've ever watched.

That's the thing. They won't. If they had some pitchers that didn't have the name Mike, then maybe there would be a shot. But they don't.
Steinbrenner is going to have a ball firing every pitcher on the staff.

sj41
10-21-2004, 12:15 AM
Why must you tease me by putting Pedro "I choke agains the Yanks" Martinez in. :(I'm sure Pedro wanted to go in because he needs to prove that he can pitch against the Yakees. This is his last chance of the season to do so. I think the manager felt that by putting Pedro in, he might be able to raise his confidence so he would hopefully pitch better in the future. And I bet Lowe was pretty tired from pitching so much, you know? :)

He got the last out, though with a 5 run lead, so they should do fine. But then again, these are the RedSox. :P

And as I'm typing this, another homer by the RedSox. :P

I knew right after the Yankees lost game 4 that this would go 7 games, Boston is such a talented team I wouldn't have expected them to be taken out easily. I commend them for their achievement, but it doesn't change the fact that they still have a ways to go before winning it all.

Ok, ALCS came out how I want. Now the Cards will win the NLCS and the World Series. I will call right now who is going to win the series for the Cardinals. It will be Edgar Renteria. I guess we are just coming from different places on this one...Ya see, if the Red Sox had lost this one, it would have been a huge blow to all the fans watching. Greatest comeback in sports history.
Greatest choke in sports history.

One of the gutsiest, most heroic performances of a pitcher by Schilling.
Great performance by Lowe after 2 days rest, gave us 6 innings, 1 run.
Big Papi David Ortiz, the new Mr. October. Pedro took out Godzilla with the knockdown pitch, he wasn't the same since.

Any word on firings yet? Brian Cashman is probably fired already, not that he deserves it. George knows he can't fire Torre.

 at ESPN.com!

Talk about new world orders. The Boston Red Sox are the new symbol of inspirational comebacks and the New York Yankees are the new symbol of choking collapse. The next thing you know, Ben Affleck may make a decent movie.

Meanwhile, the Yankees finally know what it is like to play for or root for the Red Sox. Sunday, they were three outs from wrapping up a four-game sweep. Monday, they were two innings from spanking the Red Sox again. Tuesday, they had the pennant-clinching run at home plate in the ninth inning.

And Wednesday night, "Who's Your Daddy?'' T-shirts went on sale for half-price.

And Thursday, no doubt, the pink slips go out.

The Yankees and most of their fans were arrogant enough to think so.

Derek Lowe went on 2 days rest, but he really stepped up. He deserves a lot of credit, especially considering he had a bad season.

I shouldn't say they were arrogant for thinking so. They're the 2nd best team in the AL and had as much a shot at winning as the Redsox did. But Kevin Brown let them down, and Derek Lowe shut them down.

Well, I guess my bigger question is why start him in the first place?...I realize he had the most rest of any Yankees pitcher, but given his horrible recent track record against Boston it made no sense. Torre could have easily found a way to split the work up between Vasquez/Loaiza/Hernandez.

You know I'm a Yankees fan, but when I found out that Brown was getting the start it wasn't a question of "if" he would give up any runs; it was a question of "how many."

dafoomie
10-21-2004, 05:49 AM
I think Torre thought there were going to be a lot of runs scored on both sides. Kevin Brown would have had to pitch some innings either way, I don't think El Duque could have gone on short rest + his shoulder. I think you'd rather have Brown than Loaiza. I'd have gone with Vasquez, not that he was much good tonight himself.

Both pitching staffs were completely blown, whoever was going to win was the team with someone that really stepped it up that night. Who'd have thought it would be Derek Lowe?
