Although it's been nine years now, this day always saddens me, for this is the day that Shannon Hoon passed away. Shannon's death was just one of three very preventable deaths of the mid-90s, along with Brad Nowell of Sublime and Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. Blind Melon will always remain one of my favorite bands. I leave you with the inscription on Shannon's grave and some Blind Melon/Shannon links.

I know we can't all stay here forever so I want to write my words on the face of today and they'll paint it
RIP Richard Shannon Hoon (September 26, 1967 - October 21, 1995)

My Mom always gets very sad thinking of Hoon. She was a big Blind Melon fan, and she thinks I look just like him. RIP.

10/21 is always a sad day here in lafayette, indiana.
there always seems to be a bigger crowd around campus too because of a memorial they have in his honor.

I remember everyone at school being soooo bummed because all of the dead heads had migrated to Blindmelon. On a happier note, I heard that one of the guys from the band was thinking of putting together a live album. Anyone know anything about that?

The big moment I remember about Hoon was on the night of the day they found Cobain's body Blind Melon performed on the Late Show. Hoon had a large question mark written on his forehead with black marker. He commented "why?". Then a little while later he also died through drug use. Again, why?

Wow... what to comment on first...
Morbid - why didn't you buy those CDs? I'd advise "Classic Masters" if you don't own any of their other CDs it's a pretty good compilation. Although, I myself prefer Soup.
Jntzn - There's another memorial on the weekend closest to his Bday as well, I wanted to go down there last year, but plans fell through for whatever reason, although some of my friends did go. This year I had to work.
Bob - I've heard about this too. I actually have a few burned cd's of live performances, so I doubt it's anything new. I believe it was going to be called "Pieces of Melon" or something like that.
Slag - I remember that performance as well, Shannon changed a few of the lyrics to Change, as he often did with live performances. At the end he says "Probably speaking on behalf of a lot of people, we'd like to say goodbye to Kurt Cobain." Sadly, it wasn't too long after that we'd be saying goodbye to Shannon.
My favorite Blind Melon performance was probably the version of No Rain they did on SNL. They started off with the "ripped away" version, confused the hell out of the live audience, and then as soon as they went into the more familiar part of No Rain, the crowd went nuts. Shannon's energy was incredible, I actually have that on tape. I only wish I would've got to see them live.
