I was listening to the local morning show and they had some of these Glow in the Dark M&M's. Well, on the imstructions it says you have to hold 'em up to the light or something like that to give it its glow. So, the intern pointed out if you do as the instruction say, after a few seconds the wrapper will catch on fire.

Now, they were using studio lights. Not the poweful lights like camera lights but something slightly stronger than a 100 watt bulb. I guess the type of lights you'll find in an office building. Anyway, they held the bags up to the lights to show the next radio crew and they were completely iincredulous. Steve Martarano shouted, "Oh my God! It's smoking!"

I want to see if this is true. When I hit the supermarket I'm going to give this a try. So, if anyone has any glow in the dark bags, hold em up to a strong light for 30 seconds or so and see if the bag starts to melt or smoke or anything?

Is it the bag that is supposed to glow or the candy?

I believe it's the wrapper.

But they tried three bags and all three started smoking. Of course this is over the radio so I didn't see it. But everybody there started freaking out...

I wonder how many times the company gets sued. Of course, I am also going to pick up a couple of bags. And I like the sig Cheapy!

How close to the light was the bag? Studio lights get ridiculously hot, and I can easily imagine any paper product start to smoke if it was close enough. If the bag was a few feet away that's another story...

I don't know. Maybe I should send an email to Angelo on the Morning Show. If anyone was listing to 610 in the Delaware Valley around 10-10:15 they can confirm this. That's when the shift change happened and they tried it out.

I'm gonna have to grab a bag and see for myself.

I sent an Angelo an email and I guess that's something we can try to figure out. I doubt it was a few feet away. I think few paper products would start combusting three feet away from even a very stong light source. But it may have been a foot, six inches, I don't kknow. I asked him about the strength of the lights and the distance the bag was held from the bulb. Hopefully he'll get back to me.

Since its a radio station, wouldn't the studio lights stay on all the time since they probably share the room with djs after them? That would mean that I bet they get pretty darn hot. How close are they holding the bag to the lights?

Alright! Let's all burn down our houses because Admiral Ackbar says so. I'd laugh if one of the CAGs burns down their house because of M&Ms. Now that would be a sad cause of a house fire, a glow-in-the-dark bag.

Angelo got back with me. His statement was, "Do not try this at home."

If anyone is a lab student or knows one I'm sure this could be tested easily in a lab environment. A lot of CAG's are college students.

Perhaps you're missing the point - that this radio host is obviously retarded. Paper will burn if held close to a sufficient heat source. It could have been a bag of popcorn or feces, no difference. Please tell the radio personality to either quit being a dumbass or to get a job where he doesn't have the opportunity to have other dumbasses listen to him.

Paper burning!! OMG, that's simply crazy! I've never heard a more EXCITING tale! Seriously dude, what hick arse town do you live in that the radio host sits there seeing if paper will catch fire?

Thank you. It needed to be said. :D

Now...the REAL question here. Are M&Ms flammable?

Yeah, they're those Shrek 2 glow-in-the-dark wrappers. They work best after holding them in the light for a while, then looking at them in the dark. I guess if you held it, or any paper, to the light for too long it could burn.

Well Duh, of course paper is flammable. It's not like it's lined with abestos. Stick your hand on a light bulb and you'll burn yourself.

The question is, if you hold the paper up to a light, not anything extreme, not a quarter inch away from the bulb, but if you put it near a low heat level where normal paper would not burn is the warpper more likely to singe due to its glow in the dark covering?

I only hold it for a few seconds, and no fire/smoke at all. I guess we'll find out more after Halloween when kids start trying it.
