Ok, so I have my cable internet connection on the second story of my house, but my XBOX is downstairs. I don't want to run any more wires. Can I set up a wireless connection to it? Has anyone tried one of those deals where you plug a network connection into a power outlet? Ideas?
Thanks,
RD

There are two ways to set up a wireless connection.
A. Purchase a wireless router and a wireless bridge/gaming adapter. Connect your cable modem to the wireless router's WAN port, connect a patch cable from your PC to the number 1 port on the router. Connect the bridge to your Xbox via a patch cable.
B. Purchase a wireless router and a wireless PC card. Install card in PC. Connect cable modem to WAN port on wireless router, use a patch cable to connect the Xbox to port 1 on the router.
Choice A is the more common, but.. choice B is somewhat cheaper and is much easier if you are hooking up an Xbox and a PS2.

Those are lame.
If' you're actually going to do wireless, do it right and buy 802.11G cards and adapters.
If you watch them close enough you can get the stuff either on clearence or with a nice rebate.
I got a wireless hub/router, 3 notebook cards, and the Xbox adapter all for about $120.

Exactly which part of those are lame? If you use wireless when you have no need to.. you're an idiot. No matter what set-up you're using, wireless is less reliable, slower and less secure than a landline connection. Wireless is good for laptops, its decent when you dont want to wire between rooms, thats about it.

Do you have cable TV downstairs with your Xbox?
Then you can move the cable modem downstairs, buy a cheap ass wireless router and wireless USB adapter for your PC.
Plug the xbox into the router via ethernet cable and connect the wireless USB adapter to your PC.
Should run you about $50 total (after rebate?) if you find the right deal.

Another possibility is to look for deals on those Nyko NetXtender things...Don't have one myself, but the product description fits your situation.

I'm pretty sure he meant the network through the power lines setup.

I know this is a wireless thread, but If its just downstairs get a 100ft Cat5 cable from EB B&M (14.99 last I saw) when you need to play a game, just hook that mother up. Of course if you need to network ,you will have to get a router. But as cornfed said, its cheaper and faster and more reliable

The majority of people dont want to have to A. see a wire snaking through the house and/or B. have to get behind their entertainment center to hook a cable up everytime they want to go on live. Using option B I was online with both PS2 and Xbox for ~$40 with no real wires(other than short patch cables).. its worth the extra money, trust me.

I would stay away from the Nyko NetXtender. My friend had one and he would get disconnected every 10 or 15 minutes because of the weak signal and speed of the unit.
We hooked him up with an 802g router and XBOX network adapter and he has been playing lag free and disconnect free for about 6 months now.

A few quick lashings and knots and you will be able to scale your way down the wall, if you wanted to. LOL j/k For me its not to much trouble because I tie up the slack and its pretty easy to pull my XBOX and the rare instance my PS2 to plug the Cat5 in

Not you Cornfedwb. Your advice was solid. I was talking about the devices that you plug into a power outlet that use the electrical wiring and eschew the use of RJ45 Cat5e.
I probably should have quoted him. We just posted at almost exactly the same time, so it ended up looking like I was answering you.
If he can manage stringing cable to where he needs it (through vents and such, wired isn't bad at all. Unfortunately, that's rarely the case in most house. Anyway, if someone is looking into wireless, it's doubtful they are only doing it to network 2 machines.

The Nyko Net Extender works awesome for me. Only $80 and well worth the purchase.

80! Wow, I mean, you can usually find a G-router for 50 even on a rather poor rebate.
I was expecting the Net Extenders to be a 30-40 dollar product.

I wish I could have bought that, but I wouldn't know where to begin setting up a wireless network.
