Just finished playing the Mega Man X8 demo on the latest retail store "kiosk" demo disc. It is very well done, and very enjoyable. Here's a brief summary of my experience:
Graphics:
Sidescrolling 3D graphics, none of that shit we got in Mega Man X7. The graphics and textures are far smoother and clearer than those in X7. The camera is VERY smooth. It will tilt slightly to show your character entering the area, but other than that there are no camera changes.... nothing but pure sidescrolling MMX goodness.
Sound:
Great. Music is pretty good, sound is great. The demo is english with japanese voiceovers, so hopefully when we get the full release in December we won't get those dumbasses who voiced X7. X and Axl's voices in X7 were awful, to the point that if Capcom is considering hiring the X7 actors, I'd really prefer the voices from the Japanese version of X8 (each character has a voice that suits their character quite well... none of that thirteen year old shit we heard last time).
Gameplay:
Wow. The action is quite fast. The controls are VERY responsive, just like the PS1/SNES MMX games. It just feels right... this is how MMX should have been done on the PS2 in the first place. Both analog and d-pad are enabled. X to jump, [] to shoot, O to dash, /\ is not used. X8 has the same character switch system, (L1 or L2) which is nice, and is actually required to get your character out of some sticky situations with bosses, etc. Also, if I recall correctly, X7 would start you back at the beginning of the level if one of your characters died. In X8, after the character in use runs out of life, it immediately switches to another available character.
Overall:
It appears that all is not lost. Mega Man is not going down the shitter. X8 will be well worth the $40, but if you're skeptical... hey, Christmas is coming up, right? Free money. ;)
EDIT: I forgot to mention that Axl has been changed to essentially match Bass from Mega Man and Bass... meaning, he no longer has lock on ability, but may aim in any direction while firing. But just like Bass, he can't move when he's shooting. Much better.
