I've never stolen anything, I just pick something up and put it in a different place at a store.

Hmm my option is not there. Yeah I stole, lets see I stole a lot of gum and candy at the supermarket when I was a kid. More recently, well I saw all these pokemon cards all over the area in a K-Mart. They were all out of their deck box. So I did a little switch where I put my hand in the back pocket, dropped the cards in their and pull out my wallet got some cash out and bought a candy bar.
Last time I saw the cards laying around I took them up front, and they just took it and tossed it. I was honest the first time, but I rather put them to use instead of seeing them thrown away. So yes I have quite a few times when I was young (just candy) and recently with those cards. Nothing serious though.

Yes, but not in the sense you think. There was a few times I ended up punching in or out 5 minutes earlier or later than I should have. People at work
did it all the time, but after doing it 2-3 times, I disliked myself for doing it, so I stoped. It's amazing how much money retail organizations lose by having people punch in a few minutes early or punch out a few minutes late.

Really?? Just for a few minutes? My wife used to work at Sears and they allowed them to punch in 5 minutes earlier even 10. Also she would punch out late because sometimes they would still be doing other things and would get out later than their schedule.

I got yelled at for that one time, but that is so stupid. I used to get to work a few minutes early - so if I start work early I should punch in when I freaking start working and not give the company FREE labor.

i don't understand what is bad about that. at all. you punch in when you start working, you punch out when you're done. that's wrong?
that's getting paid for work, not stealing.

Yes. I don't do it on a regular basis, but when salespeople piss me off I sometimes steal a small item from that store. Mostly from the local best buy because those guys are real douchebags that constantly harass me about buying something I don't want. I realized that I could get caught and that could screw stuff up for me, so I stopped. I still don't regret anything though.

Hmmm, when I was younger I used to steal candy. About two years ago I stole manga from Books-a-Million week after week at the Pokemon Convention every Saturday. I eventually got caught, though. They had me waiting outside for my parents thinking I wouldn't run away, which I did. And I never went back there. I was contemplating whether to steal a Beyblade with the box open at a closing KB Toys while the employees were busy marking down the prices about a week ago. I decided not to.

When I was a little kid, I was accused of stealing from a convenient store. Apparently, putting my hands in my big, puffy jacket was suspicious. One of the clerks approached me and said, " I saw you put something in your pocket." Without my consent, he began checking my pockets. Obviously, I didn't have anything there, but he escorted me out anyway and said, " If you are not buying anything, you must stand out here." I guess you make more money when your customers aren't allowed to see the products.

Nobody can take the liberty to just stick their hands in your pockets, even if they think you stole something. Were your parents with you when it happened? I'd be pissed.

I had the same experience as yellowaznboy, on a shoe store in Gurnee Mills. Since I was the only person in the store, and they had a missing pair of shoes(baby shoes to be exact), it had to be me.. I was 12 why the hell would I steal baby shoes.. but I get it now, I was a minority and the employees (two of them) where (no offense to anyone) both white. The checked my pockets but of course they couldnt find anything, and one of them followed me from a distance after I was out of the store. Then I confronted him in from of a security guard.. he blushed .
About stealing.. well, Ive gotten five-finger discounts from friends who works for Target and Jewel-Osco..they deactivate the security device for me, you know buy 1 item, come out with 2 or 3... sometimes more.

I was with my brother, who didn't see any of it. It's a good thing I drank that Brisk: Lipton Iced Tea soda on the way there, or else it might have been worse.

What they did is wrong, checking your pockets. Store employees or security guards cannot do anything until you leave the store. Cuz the accused will just say "Oh I was gonna pay for it before I left". Of course, you guys were kids, so they took advantage of you. They know that you wouldn't know rights like that, like invasion of privacy etc. Definitely wrong.
I have a friend who is seriously a klepto. She doesn't steal really expensive things, like dvds for example. Just random stuff she "doesn't feel like paying for". I don't like it at all, and finally had to tell her that she can't do it if I'm with her. You automatically become an "accessory" to the crime. Anyway, I never really go anywhere with her anymore.

i never really stole anything, i'm always the "look-out". for example (and this is really childish and stupid) when i was in 7th grade, i had to go to summer school. well, we had this teacher i didn't like, not one bit, and these new shipment of books came in, not the text books, just reading kinds. well, seeing how they were brand-spanking new, i thought "WOW, this must be worth something!!1" so i told my friend about my brilliant scheme, and he was like "ok, you watch out for her, and i'll take the books, and scratch out the room/teacher name" in the end, i had a book, he had a book.
just recently i was cleaning up my attic, when i saw an old box, and there were tons of books in there, and there was the book i took. man, i felt stupid and guilty.

I suppose I'd steal.. if there weren't consequences. But I'd do a lot of things if they were inconsequential.

Me and my friend steal each other's CD's. They disappear So fast it's a shame. I had to buy Jay-Z Vol.2 over 6 times. But I got Ghostface Killa's Iron man and every Outkast Cd so it balances...

i've stolen before and gotten caught. since i was only 12 and my sister basically prodded me on, who was 16 at the time, they let us go and didn't press charges. i don't really steal anything, it's just my friends though sometimes i'm upset about it so i leave the store so they can steal it theirselves and not say that i was involved somehow. the only real thing that i steal occasionally now is lunch from school, because my mom never gives me money and/or forgets and the food is overpriced anyway.

Yes I've stolen a couple of things when I was a kid. Your poll is skewed though; what about people who stole more than once and for whom its not an addiction. Or who do it with shame for different reasons like to take from the rich to give to the poor? There's a million different possibilities... just nitpicking =P

I used to be klepto when I was in my teens, but then after college I got a job busting theives, working Loss Prevention at a Borders book store.
Wackiness ensued.
Best story: caught a junkie stealing $500.00 of computer books, and while apprehending him he tackled me and we rolled down two flights of metal stairs.
It was a stupid thing for me to do, though, cause when the cops searched him they found a bunch of dirty syringes and a big-ass knife.
I'm just lucky I ended up on top of him at the bottom of the stairs. I'm 6'4" and 230 lbs. Ain;t no man moving with me sitting on his back.

As a kid, a 'friend' and I used to go down to the local c-store and 'five finger discount' stupid things like candy bars and gum. One time, however, after we probably took like 8 bucks worth of stuff [which, when you're dealing with 5 cent gum and 25 cent candybars, is a lot], we went outside, stored our loot, went in for more....Came back out, and our bag was gone. How ironic.
And a *few* times I did the old price-tag switch at a comic shop; nothing like Action Comics 1 for .50, but things with a couple bucks variance.
Of course, now, being adult and having run stores and having to account for that shrinkage and try to make the inventory balance out, I do feel guilty--there are consequences to actions, and some things are just wrong. But that's what childhood/youth is for, to make those mistakes and learn.
JSweeney--that's a good point. My company pays to the quarter-hour, but you get 'points' for being even one minute late or leave early [and no, no reward for being early.] So if you came in at 08:07 instead of 8 five days a week, you've 'stolen' 35 minutes of pay that you haven't 'earned'. That I don't necessarily have a problem with, because that's the company's policy, and there's one in place to counter abuse of that [the points policy, which can lead to termination]. I'm salary, so I'm out of that loop, and i do come in late rather often, but I also work late and work through lunches, so I put in my hours a week [barring a few minutes here and there on the internet, which also is 'stealing' I guess].

Something I've stolen is nagging at the back of my mind, but I really can't think of it. But I have stolen a couple candy bars, but nothing big.
Here's a funny story. At First Thursday (A big event here in Austin on a street where people can play music and sell crap), my friend was playing a joke on my other friend, and he stole her backpack and ran (as a joke, he was going to hide it). Well, some idiot lady screams "HE TOOK MY PURSE!!" as a mistake, and like 3 dudes start chasing him. Then this HUUUUUUGE guy tackled him and headlocked him. Like 300 pound guy. He held him on the ground for like 5 minutes when the lady was like "Oh, nevermind". It was hilarious. He was so pissed.

Clocking in early - well, there's an easy solution to that. EX: When I had a job at Eckerd a LONG time ago, they had it set to where you could only log in 5 minutes early. Can't they just restrict the clock so that you can't clock in early?

I don't steal now, but when I was 15-17 yrs.old (I'm 28 now) I shoplifted the following at a store near my house.
1. a few game magazines
2. a dozen or so genesis games
3. 1 super nintendo system, and 1 genesis system
4. mountain bike
Stealing is wrong folks! I was a stupid kid.

Did you put that stuff in your pocket?
Was this question directed at me?
Yep, I had a super pocket that held all the goods. Everything I stole in the store, I had out in the open. Obviously I couldn't hide items like a moutain bike and game systems.
Again stealing is wrong. If I had a time machine, I would travel back in time and kick myself in the butt.

^ if we're going across who stole what, my sister threw a foolish halloween party. a couple of my cd's were stolen, our dvd player, and dvd's from downstairs. oh yeah, and a few PS2 games. i was PISSED. and they never got caught cuz my sister never called to report, she kept thinking it was "too late" or something and my sister tried to confront her herself but she already sold all the shit! or so she said.
edit: and back in the day, my backpack got stolen, where game boy color was cool. unfortunately it was in it, and a few of my precious favorite games, and my cd player and some cd's, and some candy. again, i was pissed.

As far as clocking in early, If its that big a deal to a company they will address it, write people up and term people if it comes down to it.
I used to work in Loss Prevention for Sears, holy cow. people are amazing.
People tried to straight roll a big screen tv off the sales floor and out the door.
big ol 40+ gallon air compressors, all kinds of stuff.
Id say 75% of the time the people we caught had crack pipes on them and or some sort of drugs. the rest of the time they were either kids or people really hard up at that time in life.
I recall a time when I brought in a 6 ft lady for a credit fraud, It ended up turning into a fiasco, it took two other guys and I to hold her down while she was trying to eat a good sized bag of coke before the cops got there. I remember the bag of coke getting ripped open and a cloud of coke in the room, the carpet had a nice coating of coke on it. the file cabinets were knocked over, ah what a day that was.
another time a guy tried to wear a pair of levis out of the store. After takgin him back to the office to await the police, he took his pants off, no underwear, and then somehow acquired alighter and lit his shirt on fire whiel still wearing it. yea he was a bright guy.
good times man, that was a fun job.

Moral of the story:
1. Keep your Game Boy in your pocket
2. Don't keep your CD player in your backpack in a shady place
3. Keep the candy in the OTHER pocket. Candy can make people do nasty things.

I steal odd looking things all the time. For example if theres a game out of its case at CompUSA or Blockbuster I'll probably take it or if something is on the floor opened, I'd take that too. Rarely if ever do I open packages and take new items out.

I would steal grapees from the grocery store. But my mom told me it was taste testing. Then when I got older my friend taught me how to switch tags of more expensive item with less expensive items to get a discount. It worked all five times that I did it. Then I stole and 25 cent piece of candy when I was in college. That was all of the stealing I've ever done in my entire lifetime

The theft I hate the most is when people dip their filthy grubs into bulk food containers. Not only is it stealing, but it's also disgusting. What makes it even more irritating is that the store doesn't do anything about it. I once saw a guy dip his hand at least three times for some chocolate-covered peanuts. I reported him to the cashier, but she said there was nothing she could do about it. That was the last time I went there.

I strained my back and neck, but my asshole boss didn't even give me the rest of the day off. Nor did I get a bounty on recovering stolen goods, since it was my duty at the time to prevent shoplifters. If I'd been just an avergae employeee I would have gotten fifty bucks.
