Thing sucked? I beg your pardon. Great Lion King port, good portable Shining Force, Streets of Rage 2 was fun, Beavis and Butthead was good. It didn't have as much greatness as the gameboy, but there was still plenty of fun to be had here.

I had the spinoff of eternal champions which was total garbage, a spider-man game that was okay and a football game (montana sports talk?) where I take a kickoff and run around the field in circles with a trail of defenders. I'm sure there were good games, but I didn't have any.

I gotta say, I traded a friend my lynx for a game gear and felt I got ripped off.

I think it is Virtua Fighter Animation. There was one on the genesis too, but it is basically a 2d fighting game with the VF characters.

Games I loved on the gamegear

Streets of Rage 2. A very competent port with a lot of the moves and the same gameplay.
Shining Force. Just as good as the genesis one. Takes hours to beat too.
Fatal Fury Special. VERY GOOD handheld port of Fatal Fury. Infact this game is BETTER then ANY gameboy fighting game at the time and only really became beaten by the Neo Geo Pocket systems fighters. The control was great and a lot of the moves were there too. A lot of characters for a portable.
Shinobi was good.
Megaman was fun

It's not as good as the gameboy, but I have a lot of good memories with this handheld. I just wish the battery didn't die so fast.

Now some vids of some of my favorite gamegear games.

A quick question- I got a Game Gear a few years ago as a Christmas gift (my sister's fiance know I loved my retro gaming stuff), but I've always wondered if it's not working as well as it could be. For example, I have Sonic/ Sonic 2 on it, but have a very difficult time playing them due to ghosting on the screen... once Sonic gets going the whole thing gets pretty blurry and I have a hard time following along. I never owned/saw Game Gears at work 'in the day'- is this normal? Or is my system just a lil' fucked up? Sonic's the only game I really notice this in, but everything else I have moves slower too.

I never had any problems like that...

It's probably just my system then... I'm not too worried about it, it works just fine in every other aspect and I don't play it enough to try and get a 'better' one. I'll just have to be careful in choosing 'speedy' games. :D

World Series Baseball
Alladin

alladin was fun, puzzle game was OK, mostly the gamegear sucked (played my Nomad much more)

For me the Game Gear had it's ups and downs but for the most part I enjoyed it and if I can find one in good working condition with everything I'd buy it. I never owned one but a girl across the street from me did. So I'd go over and I'd let her play my gameboy and I'd play her game gear.

I wish I could find a copy of Sonic Drift 2 :-(

I always thought of the Game Gear as the rich kids Gameboy. It was a cool system for the time, but damn, did that thing eat batteries. Wasn't it like 6 AA batteries that couldn't last more than 3 hours? I did like the X-men games.

They have Sonic Drfit 2 in one of the Sonic Collections for the Gamecube and PS2.

The only games I remember having are Sonic 2 (came with it), the NBA game with David Robinson, The Lion King, and the Power Rangers game. I liked it, though.

What about the Nomad? I see Game Gears all the time but I don't even remember seeing this thing at all when it was in production.

I remember seeing the Nomad one time at Wal-Mart for around $100 i believe

I used to own a Nomad. The biggest problem was it's size. The thing was a freaking whale. But it was the coolest thing to play Genesis games like Beyond Oasis & Shinning Force on the go.

I wish they would make a new Game Gear. I honestly can't stand the screen on that thing. Way too much blur... I would be so happy to see a Game Gear with LCD tech from our time.

Forgetting about how big of a battery sucker that thing was as well? :P Like the Game Gear, that sucker needed 6 AA batteries and drained them like nothing.

My solution to the battery thing when I got my Game Gear? I went right out and bought another Genesis power supply... I just plug it straight in.;)

Alternatively, I also have one of these (http://cgi.ebay.com/SEGA-GAME-GEAR-BATTERY-PACK-TRAVEL-CHARGER-POWER-SUPPLY-/220592983532?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Video_Games_Accessories&hash=item335c5dcdec). Took me a few tries to figure out how to charge it, but it does still work. Personally, I can't imagine what it would've been like to run around with a big ol' game gear and one of these on your belt.

If I remember correctly, wasn't the nomad not even really sega's design? They just took the design of someone and mass produced it? It didn't even have a built-in spot for batteries. The ability to use a 2nd controller and hook up to the tv was really smart though.

I still remember when my parents took me to Electronics Boutique at the mall back in the day and let me decide whether I wanted a Game Boy or a Game Gear. All of my friends at school had a Game Boy so that was my choice, but I still remember playing the hell out of World Series Baseball and Crash Test Dummies for the Game Gear every time I went to my cousins house.

No, it was Sega's design. The thing is that the Nomad was based off an already existing handheld that was exclusive to Japan called the "Mega Jet." The main difference was that it lacked a screen and was hooked into the TV screen and was powered by an AC adapter.

It was basically a Genesis/Mega Drive that took little to no space and could be pretty much taken anywhere where there was a TV.

All Sega of America did was add a screen to it and gave it the ability to run on batteries and there you have the Nomad.
