edited topic.. i need help building the actual page now
anyone know the cheapest web hosting place. im used to geocities free service with yahoo so anything would be an improvement.
im also very rusty with html so are there any sites or maybe programs that make it easy to make webpages.
it would also be nice if they gave you your own domain as well

I've been looking for a cheap web hosting service as well. Right now I'm with Angelfire, but I've been considering actually getting an address of my own. I'm not sure who is the cheapest. Lycos (Angelfire) is offering a web domain for about $8 a month (the startup cost is around $25, I think), but I would like to know if there's one cheaper than that. Also, I'm looking for one that is easy to the HTML files that I have without too much hassle.

How much you want to pay depends greatly on what you want from your website. If you don't want much beyond a place to stick a few pages, then there's lots of places that are <$5/month and will work just fine. If you want more advanced features, such as message boards or PHP pages, then you're going to have to look harder because most of the cheap websites don't offer that sort of stuff.
Personally, I've been using PowWeb (http://signup.powweb.com/powweb-bin/referer.cgi?account_id=40814) for about 2 years now and have been extremely happy with it. It costs $7.77/month, and no setup fee if you sign up for a year (otherwise, $25 setup.) It offers an ungodly amount of bandwidth, far more than you'll ever actually need unless you're planning to start a CAG of your own or something. There's a one-time fee of $10 to set up an SQL account (needed to run a message board.) Its a remarkably cheap host, considering what it comes with. Most places that charge $20+/month don't offer nearly as much. Its almost at the 'suspiciously cheap' level, but as I said, I've been using it for 2 years now with vey few problems (occasional downtime, but no more than what I would consider a normal 'that's life' level.)
If you happen to go the PowWeb route, please use me as a referal - I'll get $15 (basically 2 free months) :)

you may wana try www.i8.com... they host free and you can then use www.godaddy.com to buy a CHEAP domain name ( i think its 8.95 or so for a .com domain!) and have it forwarded to your free site (godaddy gives you free forwarding.. all you have to do is type the address of the site you want forwarded to and boom, your done! i used this service to get my girlfriend a .com domain for her livejournal and it works like a charm!

so is that the cheapest way to do it. thats pretty cheap to register a domain. you pay yearly??
also the free hosting isnt bad but the montly bandwidth is pretty low. i remember i always used to have this prob with the free yahoo one. is the yahoo pro one any good. i thinks its 8.95 a month

Yep. Just make sure you remember to reregister it before it expires the next year, though - its VERY easy to forget :)

Yeah, that i8 one only has 0.5GB/month. That's pretty pathetic. Even the free Yahoo/Geocities gives you 3GB/month. I just took a quick look and Yahoo Pro (the $8.95 plan) gives you 10GB/month. Just for comparison, Powweb gives you 5GB/day - essentially 150GB/month. Also, I just noticed that they have a new promotion where if you sign up for a year, you get your domain name registered for free. Sorry, I'll try to stop advertising them now :)

I've been using www.1and1.com for years, and everyone I know who uses it agrees, it's one of the best web providers out there and their domain names are cheap as fuck as well.

Good site to learn your Web skills...
http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp
Does your ISP offer webspace? If so you could save your self some $$$ there and then just get a domain from GoDaddy.com (I pay about $18 ever 3 years for my domain) and then setup a DNS account at ZoneEdit.com.
You need a DNS record in order for people to hit www.yoursite.com (or whatever)..the DNS record points the request to where your site is hosted (you'd actually use a redirect instead of pointing to an IP address)...ZoneEdit is free up to 5 domains and I think you have as many subdomains as you want ie; mail.whaterver.com, search.whatever.com, etc...
So you'd only get a domain for about $20 for 3 years and just have zoneedit point to your web space hosted by your ISP.

damn so many choices which i suck on deciding. ok so should i register the domain with godaddy??
and as for host what should i do? i really dont know which one to go with. do they have programs that help you make the site since i suck at html. (ex.yahoo pagebuilder) and which one would you people decide to go for. please factor cheapness and reliability.
thanks alot
and also what is the dns for? i thought godaddy forwarded your site to any other url for free? i have comcast as my isp so dont know if they have webspace. i dont need any emails or anything

that powweb is looking good as well. domain included is pretty nice.. question on the following
Terms Monthly Added Promotion Total
3 Months $7.77 NONE
($20 Setup Fee) $43.31
1 year $7.77 2 Months FREE!
*1 Year FREE Domain Name $93.24
2 years $7.77 4 Months FREE!
*2 Years FREE Domain Name $186.48
is there a setup fee for the 1 year contract then. and what do i have to pay up front.
also what are the possibilities of a message board
No. 1and1.com is cheaper. $4.99 a month (Linux -- 6.99 a month for Microsoft) and more bandwidth and space then you can ever use, on top of $5.99 a year for a .com domain. (They just had 2.99 .us domains this summer)
$67 a year for everything you could possibly need.

Probably get billed 6 months at a time. I don't bother checking, so I can't verify.

That would mean that, although they quote their price in terms of $x/month, you have to pay in 3 month chunks (instead of getting a bill every month, you get a bill every 3 months for 3 months worth of services. Not that you'll get a bill - they generally just charge your credit card...) Because companies have to pay fees to the credit card company every time they charge a card, they try to avoid constant itty-bitty charges and instead clump them together into larger charges more infrequently.
is there a setup fee for the 1 year contract then. and what do i have to pay up front.
For Powweb, there's no setup fee if you pick the one year option. In that case, you'd have to pay $7.77 * 12, paying for all 12 months in one lump sum, plus you get 2 months free, plus a free domain name registration (if you haven't already registered it already via GoDaddy or whatever.) Remember what I said about them preferring to avoid constant small credit card charges? :P If you go the three month at a time route, they charge you every 3 months, and you'd have to pay for 3 months up-front, plus a $25 setup fee.
also what are the possibilities of a message board
For powweb, you'd pay a one-time $10 fee to create an SQL account (its a database), and you can then install any PHP-based board that you'd want. I use PHPBB2 (www.phpbb.com), which is free, though there are a lot of other options, both free and commercial.

I've been pretty happy with myhosting.com. They're the same people who do the mail2web.com site. I'm not doing any pages at the moment but I did recently register my last name so I can use the domain for email hosting. They offer five addresses plus and admin address for all of $3 a month.
Since I'm likely to move around a fair bit in the coming year I wanted a POP3 mail server that wasn't tied to any ISP and this deliver for almost negligable price. Fortunately, I share my last name with only a couple dozen others on the whole planet and only one of them would know what to do with a domain registration, so there wasn't a whole lot of competition for the domain and all the major TLD variants. So now I get to be firstname@lastname.com, not something all that many others can do.

hows that silver plan...its $5. would you say its reliable?? and i should pro register a domain somewhere else right cuz from them its like 10.95

Yes, they were reliable.
I moved from TCH when the site got too big for a shared server.
You can register the domain elsewhere, if you want to save a few bucks.

I own Mech Hosting.com, which is a fairly large hosting company. Our servers host MANY large gaming sites such as:
FableSector.com
Videogamer.us
And many more I cant remember off top of my head.
Google Us and you can see some good feedback, or talk to me over AIM and we can work out something.
We can register domains via our GoDaddy Reseller Account for $9/Year (.com,.net,.org), and I'd be willing to work out a custom plan monthly or yearly with you.
Either way, PLEASE DONT HOST with powweb or 1and1, Google them to see their feedback. Not so good.

As far as HTML goes, I'm halfway decent with HTML. I could help you if you want, either teaching you some of the basics, or doing the actual code. Question though - what type of website are you building? I had a website at one point - all purpose entertainment site, featuring everything under the sun.
PM me if you want.
