The ESRB leaked this last week, but 2K announced it today. It sounds like it will be another port of the PC/XBox/PSP game, with a few tweaks. For those who have not tried any of those other versions (Or any of the originals from the 1980s and early 90s), Sid Meier's Pirates! is an open-world title set in the Caribbean, placing you as a young buccaneer who is out to find the man who sold his family into slavery. To do this you can sail around the Caribbean, fight and capture ships and towns, form alliances (or make enemies) with the four major naval powers, fight famous pirates, locate buried treasure, trade goods with the ports, marry a governor's daughter, etc.

2K Games confirms Firaxis' classic action strategy title will set sail on Nintendo's console later this year.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board flew the flag for Sid Meier's Pirates! on the Wii a couple of weeks ago, and it now comes as no surprise that 2K Games has made it official. The publisher announced today that it will bring Firaxis' classic action strategy game to the Wii this fall.

Pirates! on the Wii is in development at 2K China, and just as in Firaxis' original, it sees gamers taking the helm of a 17th-century vessel to conquer the Caribbean. Gamers can take the wheel of 27 customizable ships as part of their mission to rid the Spanish main of the nefarious Marquis de la Montalban. All the while, gamers will collect treasure, explore the open seas, and engage in wanton acts of piracy.

In addition to battling pirates and colonial powers using the Wii Remote, the game incorporates a variety of minigames, ranging from swashbuckling sword fights to wooing the governor's daughter through dance. 2K China has included two Wii-specific minigames--bombardment and lock picking--as well as other exclusive character and ship-customization options.

2K Announces Sid Meier's Pirates for the Wii

The classic pirate adventure game will take full advantage of the Wii-mote.

Xbox Live Arcade [Note: Gamespy is probably talking about the Xbox Originals release] isn't the only port being raided by Sid Meier's Pirates! 2K Games announced today the classic high-seas adventure is setting course for the Nintendo Wii this fall.

Originally launched for the PC in 2004, Pirates has made the rounds on the Xbox, PSP, XBLA, Steam, Mac, and now the Wii. 2K China is streamlining the sword fighting, dancing, ship combat controls for the Wii-mote, a move Sid Meier himself said will add a new layer to the classic game.

"We are big fans of the Wii and think Pirates is the perfect game to bring to that platform," Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games, said in a statement. "We're sure Wii fans will enjoy the timeless adventure of being a pirate captain on the high seas as much as all of our other fans have."

Plunder the 17th century Caribbean and defeat the evil Marquis de la Montalban -- and don't forget to woo those maidens -- as the game's traditional storyline and mini-games make it to the Wii, along with a couple extras. Bombardment and Lock Picking are new additions for Nintendo's console, and the Wii version will also offer exclusive character and ship customization. From 2K:

Players can helm one of 27 fully customizable ships as they descend upon unsuspecting ports of call to assemble a motley crew of seafaring bandits. Captains will collect secret treasure maps, undertake daring missions, play havoc with local townspeople and swiftly hand out pirate-style justice to local braggarts before setting sail for breathtaking open sea engagements unlike any other game before on the Wii.

Sharkey says: A fun game that truly is a good port for the Wii. Meier's name is going to be everywhere in the near future, with Civ 5, Civilization Facebook, and now Wii Pirates launching.

If it is half as fun and addictive as the old, old version that I played on my friend's Apple II...e? it'll be well worth it.

The Genesis version is awesome too although last I checked, it was going for stupid cash on eBay.

What a lame and awful looking game that is. Good riddance to the Wii!
