Listening to you guys talking about Blur, Blur does have vehicle damage, and you actually have a health bar as you take damage from attacks. The game ENCOURAGES you to slam yourself into other players (there are powerups and vehicles that are better at it than others), and that's a risk you actually end up taking if you take a lighter faster vehicle (race vehicles, sedans, etc) over a bigger off-road one (SUVs, trucks, etc). I really suggest you try it out if Split / Second wasn't your thing. It's unfortunate these two titles were released at the same time because they both have different mechanics about them that make it fun.

Red Dead Redemption is flawed, but I don't care. I am loving it. You might want to try changing the camera from "Horse Relative" to "Camera Relative", I think it is better for riding the horse. Also, you can use horse pills to keep the horse's stamina up for a decent amount of time. They are cheap and available at every Dr's office. And make sure you have a 3-star horse.

Cheapy, this isn't related to the show but I wanted to ask if you've thought about a +/- system for readers to leave about comments. There has never been a successful peripheral.

It's always been this way. The way I figure it's because, if you're a game developer, you're already playing to a limited audience (a particular console), why would you want to split that out even further by doing development for a particular peripheral like:
- Intellivoice (going way back)
- TurboGraphix CD
- Sega 32X
- Sega CD
- the various specialized controllers
- the various cameras
- the hard drive for the PS2
- the add-on networking interfaces (PS2 comes to mind but I think there were others)

You just end up either doing unnecessary development for sort of a weird add-on to a game or you end up limiting it to that peripheral and thus limiting your sales.

If it doesn't come in the box, people are less likely to pick it up (even extra controllers).

RDR is boring to you, yet you're more than happy to dump dozens of hours into the most obscure nonsensical teeny-bopper JRPG.


I honestly thought the control is amazing in RDR as well. Anyway, I do understand some of your criticism's. I don't expect everyone will love it. I do really like the fact that the story isn't full of retarded slap-stick / sex jokes, and cramming as many swears as possible into a single cut scene. The characters (most anyway) are way more believable, which I like, and the dialogue seems really fitting.


Also wombat - you mentioned that you have to wait for the 'cool-down' for your horse to slow down after you release A. You do know that you can get your horse to stop (or pull on the reigns if you will) by pressing RB, right?

On Red dead redemption metacritic score when I started playing the game I thought the exact same thing wow what a crazy meta score but now after finishing it and almost spending 40hrs playing it I can see how it got such an high score.

I totally agree with your commentary about the characters that Marston helps out in his missions. On the one hand, they are awesome and beautifully animated, but on the other they, as you were saying, are too dim witted and extreme to be believable allies of Marston's. I think the Bonnie, Beecher's Hope, and maybe the Rickets lines are the most believable and refreshing. The others just kind of stick out as over the top caricatures of what people might find funny and shocking about the wild west.

Cheapy D says it best: there is just a list of little things that could have been done to make it much awesomer (paraphrased). At the end of the day, though, an amazing and satisfying game. Totally worth $60.

I play piano, and I really enjoy pop/rock music that includes keyboard. So if Rock Band 3 includes a new instrument for this, I would be interested. Although I'm not sure how much I would enjoy it. Do people who play guitar or drums for realsies like guitar and drum rhythm games? Guitar might be different, but piano and drums seem to translate more closely over to video games.

In the vast majority of cases, posts are modded down when someone posts an opposing viewpoint, regardless of how well reasoned it may be. A moderation system should be used to discourage trolling/offensive/off topic posts, not to discourage conversation.

So the only thing I have to say about the podcast so far is about the Gamestop "deals." I've got a beef with Gamestop over the credits they're giving out as of late. They're coupon codes, but they won't let you combine them with anything other than your Edge discount. I understand the reasoning behind not letting people use multiple promotion codes on an order, but a coupon code shouldn't fall into that boat. Is anyone else bugged by this?

If you haven't finished Bonnie's yet then just keep playing. You've still only experienced a miniscule amount of the game as a whole. It picks up ten-fold after a few hours, the story especially so.

Having not finished Bonnie's missions you could say he hasn't even started the game yet.

However, to say the story picks up right away is load of bologna. The missions leading up to the climax at Ft. Mercer are nothing but bull shit favor missions of which I feel there were way too many (I found myself being just as frustrated with Irish as john Marshton was!). Every Mission you do in Mexico with the exception of the 2nd to last and 3rd to last are nothing but run around missions helping out with the Mexican Revolution that don't advance John Marshton's story at all and you end up with nothing more than a person's hopes and promises of details on what you want to know.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy the actual missions. Many of them, especially the ones involving trains, were quite fun. When it comes to the story picking up though don't expect that to happen until you are done with the missions in Mexico and you're back in Blackwater.

Riding around in this becomes less of a chore though because of the random events that take place in the game. A lot of them are really fun! I think the one I like most is the one where you have to save a dudes buddy who is about to be hanged and you have to swoop in and save the day by killing the bad dudes and shooting the rope. Plus there you can usually accomplish something like hunting, flower picking, stranger quests, etc. in between riding from point A to point B. Plus if you really do hate the riding around just throw up a camp site and fast travel to your destination.

Keep playing, Ship! This game blows GTAIV out of the fuckin' water!!!

Well, I more meant the characters and their individual stories get a lot more interesting. I think the story missions get really good once you join up with the Marshall.

With any open world R* game it's mostly focused on the mission contacts and their various sub-plots until you get close to the end. Which doesn't really bother me when they're as good as RDR's, IMO. But I see what you mean - it can feel a bit scattered at times when you're doing jobs that don't directly help John's cause.

I can't believe only 15k people listen to the Cagcast. A few comments:

First off, one of the reasons I listen to the CAGcast is that there are no nasal cloying nerdy Asians in it, which seem to be a staple of all other gaming podcasts.

The CAGcast is the best. I made a bunch of comments in the past, and either I got used to what you have going on or minor improvements have been made.
Some examples of stuff that has changed:

No plot summaries. Shipwreck used to talk about plot a lot but he seems to have stopped, and focussed on his personal experiences more. Far more enriching.

Less Wombat ME ME ME. I don't think Wombat is any less interested in talking about himself, but having Shipwreck dilutes Wombat to a wonderful level and forces him to increase the quality of his commentary, just because there's less space for him to say everything that comes to mind. There is no CAGcast with out the Womb, and Ship's arrival has only made him better (by ratios at least).

More poop talk! Well, I didn't ask for this, but there is definitely nothing wrong with philosophical exploration of human universals.

A few questions/comments for the next CAGcast:

Wombat and Cheapy like to slam the Wii as the underpowered shovelware platform that it is. I will admit I barely played with the system until my kids got old enough (around 5) to play it. Now it's their platform of choice, which I sometimes play with them. Do you think you'll use the Wii more when you're kids become old enough to play games?

Can you guys make any predictions about Shipwreck's gaming post-baby? Not that they have immediate plans, but it would be unusual for a young married couple not to have kids as part of the plan (although I couldn't blame them if they didn't want to contribute to overpopulation). Will he drop out of the podcast? Will he stop gaming? Will he sell the 'Kong? Shipwreck, what do you predict for yourself and Mrs. Ship?

Do you guys think American Jews have thicker skins than other people, as far as jokes go? That's not what I've seen. The original post mentioned Engadget as well, and it stinks there as well as every other place I've seen. Even the best user moderation system (Slashdot) has the same issue. Say something pro-Microsoft and anti-Linux and you'll get moderated to oblivion.

I've never gone to the G4 site, but I'd wage dollars to donuts that it has the same problem & you just haven't noticed it. Heck, you even suggested using it for negative purposes (modding down posts you don't agree with).

Loved that you put the first episode on the end. I've been listening since episode 1, but I had definitely forgotten how different the cast is now than it was then.

I really like the new logo, props to WhipSmartBanky. But I have to agree, it seems that Wombat has been taking some forearm 'roids.

I also have to agree with the general disinterest for Mario Galaxy. It wasn't that it was bad, but I have felt like (especially lately) I've really enjoyed the throwback to the 2-D platforming in New Super Mario Bros and New Super Mario Bros Wii. For some reason, after Super Mario 64, the 3-D Mario really didn't do it for me.

Question for Ship - what obscure games have you been playing lately? I think the first "random" gem you put me onto was Etrian Odyssey. Anything random out lately that you'd recommend?

Question for all 3 of you - Do any of you have any interest in Mod Nation Racers? I kind of like kart-racing games, so I'm thinking it could be a nice diversion, especially if it comes down in price.

GTA IV made me feel like I was playing a game where the main protagonist was Jason Statham in disguise. It might have been, who knows.

Saints Row 2 was stupid fun, but fun nonetheless. And from what i've seen, RDR is like a combination of Gun and GTA. Hopefully it's as fun as everyone makes it seem. It sure looks like it. Even the long, empty horse journeys (Without fast travel, of course. Where's the fun in not killing time?)

I wish you guys would comment on Nintendo's bundling strategy--getting Motion Plus into every Wii sold puts Nintendo at parity with Sony on everything but HD. As far as HD goes, Nintendo has made it clear they aren't interested, and this likely makes their net profit even higher since they don't have to load their box with HD hardware.

I agree with Wombat, that there should be no more talk about Move and Natal ever again. It will just be a cluster fuck--it just hurts to watch MS and Sony chasing around Nintendo trying to say "look, we wiggle too" and its embarrassing as hell because it makes it obvious that their executives have no idea what the hell they are doing. Hey Ship, I love you man. But you always seem to be more vocal about the POPULAR games that you do not like. Which tends to get annoying when you are someone (like me) who is looking forward on hearing the CAG Discussion about that particular game. Definitely say what you feel about the game ect, but if it's overly negative it would be nice to not take the majority of the time! Unless the game is critically panned by the majority... this also goes for the other two.

Of course Shipwreck doesnt like RDR, it is popular. It seems like every popular game that releases Shipwreck has to go on a rant about how much he doesnt like it and starts speaking in his angry nerd/mocking tone.

I'm just so annoyed that Mario Galaxy 2 is going to be the best reviewed game this year and close to the best reviewed game of all time. What the hell? So when Mario Galaxy 3 comes out in 2 years we have to give that game a 101% score? It's just insane.

So many talented people (some I know personally) that work on these games coming up with new ideas and creative visions taking the medium forward. And here come the Japanese with their same uncreative ideas (that westerns view as creative) and get all the credit for making perfect games. Reviewers just get excited when there is a decent game on the Wii, so they have to go and rate it the top score.

Gah, I'm just in a ranting mood. Don't take this post too seriously.

Call me crazy, but a game's popularity has nothing to do with whether or not I am having fun with it.

As far as Mario goes...it's Mario. Same goes for all of Nintedo's classic franchises. Name others sets of games that could get away with ZERO voice acting other than grunts and such. Granted, Nintendo tends to have good music in their games, but still. Nintendo games will always receive what is a sort of handicap when they are reviewed. Cheapy brings it up some times, the whole, "Frank" theory or whatever.

I don't see this at all. but what I *do* see, is that when there is a massive game out, they spend more time talking about it. It's just given more discussion time. Maybe what you are seeing is that, combined with a game or two that wasn't liked that much?

I'd rather have their honest impressions, rather than just going along with the popular view at the moment.

3D Shutter Glasses + Killzone 3 = Seizures

...It's going to happen, it will probably be all over the news and I'm going to have to stay far away. Monsters vs Aliens in 3D with those damn shutter glasses gave me a headache after 5 minutes and I just imagine that there are going to be all sorts of problems with Killzone 3. I could hardly play Killzone 2 with all the flashes and bright lights. (Shooting with the snipper rifle was all sorts of bad for me)

I think second gen 3D sets might be ok (the ones that don't require the glasses), but those shutter glasses are bad news.

So I really think that Cheapy celebrated the 200 episode by traveling to Boise because I was working Saturday night and had to go clean the bathroom because someone left a log that was the size of a toddler's arm. It was so big that it was stuck above the hole and it wouldn't flush. It really made me start dry heaving.

Anyway I just wanted to thank you Cheapy for sharing your duty with me at work.

(Okay Cheapy didn't dookie in Boise, I just never thought I'd see a log like the one that was talked about a month ago or so.)

First I need to applaud Wombat for his stance on the possible $150 price tag for project Shitbox. Telling Microsoft to go Fuck themselves is exactly what they need to hear. In fact when Wombat is at E3 he needs to record his interviews and when any company says ludicrous things, he just needs to tell them to go fuck themselves. Shipwreck offers insight on games you might otherwise miss. While I enjoy the banter that takes place in the show I don't see how anyone could say that shipwreck (easily the one with the most viable input about games) should talk less. If anything Wombat should spend less time interjecting.

Imagine Shipwreck as a cowboy. It's a funny image. That's why he doesn't like RDR. You've gotta have at least a little bit of badass in you to pull off pretending to be a cowboy. If you can suspend disbelief/immerse yourself and imagine being in the wild west the experience is amazing. The other criticisms of the gameplay are all valid.

Lately I've been listening to some old Cagcasts while at work, and today I listened to #100. The intro music was the remix of the Different Strokes theme and there was a discussion about Gary Coleman's Gamecube on eBay.
