Natal/Cirque du Soleil - Performed Sunday. Airing Tuesday June 15th, 3:30pm PDT on MTV, 9:00pm PDT on Nick@Nite; 4:00pm PDT at GameTrailers.
In less than one week, the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010 will commence. From what has been rumored/revealed so far, this is shaping up to be a major event for all platforms, with potential new hardware announcements, more information on big-name titles, the unveiling of new titles, and expanded coverage on things that were announced at previous media functions.
As it stands now, the schedule for the platform trio is similar to last year's E3, with Microsoft doing their conference on Monday, and Nintendo and Sony holding their conferences on Tuesday. However, there is a notable difference in Nintendo's case, as this year, their press conference will be twice as long, two hours, compared to one hour at the previous shows. The extension isn't too surprising, since they plan to unveil the Nintendo 3DS at the show, and some major titles, like the new Zelda Wii game, should make an appearance.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Pertinent information
Major sites to find live video streams of the press conferences:
IGN's E3 Site (http://e3.ign.com/)
Youtube E3 channel (http://www.youtube.com/e3)
* This year, IGN has partnered with Youtube to provide the live streaming videos of the conferences. Youtube's servers are pretty strong, so this might be a good feed during the busy times.
GameTrailers (http://www.gametrailers.com/e3/)/SpikeTV
* Last year's impressions: The first feed I watched was choppy, probably due to high traffic at the time. Strangely enough, it was the exact opposite for the UbiSoft conference. GameSpot's feed was choppy, and GameTrailer's feed was high-quality and silky smooth. My verdict for GameTrailers: When it works, it works beautifully.
* It has been announced that SpikeTV will have live TV coverage of Microsoft's Press Conference, exclusive TV broadcasting rights via a deal struck between Microsoft and MTV Networks. SpikeTV will not be covering any of the other conferences, so catch the Microsoft one online or on SpikeTV, and catch the rest online or on G4tv.
* Due to this deal, GameTrailers may be under pressure to better handle the increased server load this year, so their stream might be smooth during the busy times.
* It has also been announced that those with iPhones can watch the live streams on GT, an option if you are away from a computer.
GameSpot's E3 site (http://e3.gamespot.com/)
* Last year's impressions: Gamespot had poor video quality and so-so sound volume, but it's a reliable live feed.
G4tv (Online and TV) (http://g4tv.com/e32010)
* Last year's impressions: I watched the TV feed for the Microsoft presser, and as promised, it was commercial-free (Though the Microsoft feed will be online-only this year, due to the MS/MTVN TV deal). A good choice if you catch G4. Haven't tried the online feed, though it will be hosted on uStream this year (uStream app available for iPhone and Android).
1UP's E3 site (http://www.1up.com/e3/)
* Like G4, 1UP will be hosting their live videos on uStream this year.
Nintendo official E3 site (http://e3.nintendo.com/)
* This year, Nintendo will be streaming live video of their press conference at the e3.nintendo.com website. There's nothing up at the site right now, but they should add stuff as the conference gets closer.
Konami's E3 site (http://www.konami.com/e3/)
* Apparently, this will be the only place to catch a live feed of Konami's conference, and registration is required to do so.

Maniac Section
Now, like last year's thread, it's time for the section o' speculation, where I gather items that have either been confirmed, rumored, or just things that I think will appear.
First up, from the lab of Dr. Fred (Things that have been confirmed, or are incredibly likely, to appear):
Nintendo 3DS - Nintendo has already confirmed that they will be unveiling this at the show, and with the longer duration, this conference will presumably answer many of our burning questions. What tech will be powering it? What will it look like? How will the 3D effect be performed? What are the control options? What games will be made for it? What are the other features besides 3D?
New Wii Zelda - Miyamoto said last year that this untitled Zelda game would be revealed at this year's conference, and judging from a recent German interview, that announcement seems to be on track. Last year, all he gave us was a piece of artwork and the assurance that it would be a Wii Motion Plus-exclusive title.
Vitality Sensor - Iwata mentioned it at last year's press conference, and nothing else has been revealed about it since, except for some vague details on Wii Relax. Presumably, they will have some stuff to show at this year's conference.
From the footage recorded by Nurse Edna (Stuff that was announced at earlier events):
- Dragon Quest IX (DS) - Nintendo is publishing it in the US and Europe, so it would not be surprising to see the localized version at the show.
- FlingSmash (Wii) - Shown at E3 2009 by Nintendo, this is a WM+ exclusive title that's kind of tough to describe (A tennis-pinball platformer? (http://www.destructoid.com/nintendo-s-flingsmash-tennis-pinball-platforming-164931.phtml)). Interestingly enough, it currently has a $30 MSRP.
- Golden Sun DS - The third entry in the popular RPG series was announced at E3 2009, and at the time it had a short trailer and a small demo on the show floor, so we should expect more info at this year's event.
- Line Attack Heroes (Wii) - Announced at the October media event a few years ago and re-confirmed at last year's E3
- Metroid Other M (Wii) - Originally set for June but pushed to August, it will likely be playable at the show.
- Pikmin 3 (???) - Announced two years ago, and last E3, Miyamoto said that a small team was working on it. Perhaps they would be ready to show something this year.
- Sin and Punishment 2: Star Successor (Wii) - Already out in Europe and set for June in the US, they'll probably mention it and have it out on the show floor.
- Wii Party - The supposed successor to the Mario Party franchise, we'll probably hear more about this at the conference.
- Xenoblade (Wii) - Announced at E3 2009 as Monado, this re-christened RPG title may make a second E3 appearance if Nintendo plans to release it in the West.
- Dragon Quest X (Wii) - Announced by Square-Enix a few years back, we may finally hear something about it. Unlikely though, since TGS or a Nintendo/Square-Enix press event would be a more fitting venue.
- Epic Mickey (Wii) - With Warren Spector at the helm, this will be Disney's major holiday title, we may see a playable build at the show. Rumor has it that they may show a version with overhauled graphics, to look closer to the artwork.
- Ghost Trick (DS) - Localization announced at Captivate, so we probably won't see much new at this show since that occurred so recently.
- Ivy the Kiwi? (DS & Wii) - This title, from Yuji Naka's Prope studio, is supposed to be similar in gameplay to Kirby Canvas Curse. It's multi-platform, and it has a unique hand-drawn on parchment graphic style.
- Okamiden (DS) - See Ghost Trick.
- Monster Tale (DS) - A platformer, with a monster-raising twist, from the creators of Henry Hatsworth.
- NBA Jam (Wii) - We'll likely see more of this, possibly at EA's event.
- Super Scribblenauts (DS) - The sequel to 2009's Scribblenauts, and 5th Cell has promised to fix the problems of the first one (e.g. adding D-Pad control of Maxwell), while adding plenty of new stuff (adjectives and adjective-stacking).
- Might as well mention the notable Wiiware releases that have been announced, and will probably make appearances at the show in some form: And Yet It Moves, Descent, La-Mulana, Night Game, Noitu Love 2, Puzzle Agent, Stonekeep, Super Meat Boy, Toribash.
From the stampbook of Wierd Ed (Released/Announced in other regions):
- Hotel Dusk 2: Last Window (DS) - Released in Japan earlier this year, the future of this sequel to the cult hit Hotel Dusk may be questionable due to developer Cing's bankruptcy filing, but if Nintendo was planning to bring it over, there's no better place to announce it.
- Jam with the Band (DS) - The localized version of Daigasso! Band Brothers DX was quietly announced for Europe, and it seems to be bringing over all of the features of the Japanese version (Downloadable songs, Karaoke mode, etc.). A US release has yet to be announced, but E3 would be the venue to do it.
- The Last Story (Wii) - A Nintendo-published RPG from Hironobu Sakaguchi's Mistwalker studio, and E3 would be a good venue for some footage if they plan to localize it.
- Pokemon Black & White (DS) - They have already announced a release date for the US, perhaps they will reveal more footage or info at the show.
- Professor Layton and the Last Time Travel (DS) - The second Layton localization was announced at E3 2009, so the announcement of the final game in the first Layton trilogy would be fitting at E3 2010. Level-5 has already filed the trademark for "Professor Layton and the Unwound Future."
- The recent price drops on the DS Lite/i/LL in Japan could be indicative of future price drops in the western regions. Then again, perhaps not (or at least not in the short-term), since it seems the DS is still selling well in the US each month.
- Dragon Quest VI (DS) - Square-Enix has released the other two DQ remakes in the West, and they have hinted in the past that they wanted to bring this remake to the West too. Since it was finally released in Japan back in January, there would be no better time to announce this localization.
- Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light (DS) - Square-Enix has already announced it for the US, and they'll probably show something at the expo.
- Ninokuni: The Another World (DS) - As I said last year, this RPG title seems too big to stay in one country. Developed by Level-5, one of the first 4-gigabit DS carts, used that size to accomodate the fully-orchaestrated score, and animation by Studio Ghibli.
- Tales of Graces (Wii) - Probably won't be announced, since Bandai-Namco seems to bring over only a few entries of the Tales series, but still worth listing I guess.
- Atlus: They usually have a few surprises up their sleeves, last year it was Trauma Team and Shiren the Wanderer. This year, they will probably announce their localization plans. Super Robot Taisen OG Saga Endless Frontier Exceed? SRT OGS Masou-Kishin? Solarobo? The 7th Dragon? They recently announced Etrian Odyssey III, so there should be some more info at the show.
From the birdbath of Dead Cousin Ted (Misc. matters):
- Retro, developer of the Metroid Prime series, has been working on a mystery title for quite some time now. Allegedly, it was scheduled to appear at past shows, but was usually bumped at the last minute due to not being ready to show off. No time better than E3 to show what they've been working on.
- Project Sora (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Sora), a Nintendo subsidiary headed by Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai, has been developing something big for a while. Will they be ready to show what they are working on? Who knows...
- I guess on that note, we haven't heard anything from NCL for a while, and Q-Games always seem to be working on something (They should have recently finished X-Scape for DSiWare), so perhaps these two might be working on some unannounced projects. There's also Next Level Games, the developer of the Mario soccer games and the Punch-Out!! remake, though they have apparently been busy working on the Wii version of that upcoming Transformers WFC game.
- Some time ago, Nintendo filed trademarks for a "Power Wii." Perhaps we may see what that is all about.
- A Wiimote was recently submitted to the FCC. Are the changes simply related to cost-cutting measures, or could this have a built-in WM+? We might find out at this event.
- I might as well also mention the recent rumor that Activision is planning to publish a Goldeneye remake for Wii and DS, developed by Eurocom and n-Space respectively.
- Two rumors within the past week: Destructoid has reason to believe that Animal Crossing will be a launch title for the 3DS, and IGN's Craig Harris (http://wii.ign.com/articles/109/1096857p1.html) wrote about a rumor that Retro will be showing a Donkey Kong revival.

As long as Nintendo announces Last Story and Xenoblade for the US I'll be satisfied. I really don't expect much of anything from them considering the past few E3s of shame. I'll be sure to try to watch it for the lulz though.

Of all the franchises to do...
Ehh, if they return Donkey Kong to the pre-DKC days, or even make a new variation on the classic Donkey Kong, more like a mesh of DKC, DK64 and the original DK arcade game, then it might be wonderful.
Although I was holding out hope Retro would revitalize Pilotwings... but that's just me.

The DSi XL is nearly $200. Do you really expect the new handheld to be less than the old one?
botticus
06-15-2010, 08:19 AM
I imagine the 3DS will be at or above (< $200) the DSi XL. All of the current iterations are getting a price drop in Japan likely to open up that price range for the new hardware.
3DS is really the only thing I'm looking for to be exciting out of this whole expo, Zelda might fit the bill if it seems significantly changed (for the better).
Luckily I got my time-sensitive work out of the way yesterday, just starting a weeklong activity today that should leave me plenty of time to watch or at least listen to this whole thing.

Hm, the original was only $150, it would be nice if it were that cheap. I say this like I'm not going to buy it, regardless of price.

This new Zelda looks like fun and I will likely buy it (I haven't bought a game for my Wii since SSBB came out), but the motion control doesn't seem all that responsive in this demo. It's taking Miyamoto several attempts to do simple things like slice a certain direction.
EDIT: Too bad this won't have Gamecube controller support. I imagine you'd be able to everything in one attempt with something as precise as an analog stick and buttons!

It may have been something on the stage. I really can't see them being confident enough to show it on stage and letting folks try it on the floor unless they figured it was ready to show. This is Miyamoto we're talking about.

The show was great. Started off slow, but then lots of great stuff to look forward to, and I'll be perhaps alone in saying that I really liked how Kirby game looked. I wish they'd found a way to show us the 3DS, but there was no way to do that. I presume they'll have kiosks in stores showing it off like they do the DS Lite now. Am I the only one that thought that the Zelda game was dumb?
No. Based on what they've shown so far I agree. The graphics looked like the middle point between Wind Waker and Twilight Princess and were just OK, nothing thrilling. The play mechanics aren't what needed to be changed. It's the pacing and structure of the entire game that needs to be overhauled. I'm already guessing that the game is going to feel just like another Zelda but with tactical waggle and I am in no rush to play it.
This event was so good that even CheapyD must have been impressed, nevermind he doesn't like stuff unless its a shooter. But even he has to realize that the event was infinitely superior to the MS one.
We didn't see much information about the 3DS because its not going to launch till fall 2011 in the US, we'll have more info closer to the japanese early 2011 launch.
as far as Zelda, Epic Mickey also had interference, Google had the same problem a few weeks ago and Apple a week ago. With so many bluetooth devices at the same place it causes interference.

That list is likely real. Nintendo confirmed alot of things with this press release (Also from GAF).
Nintendo changed the world of video games with touch-screen gaming on the Nintendo DS™ in 2004. Nintendo then pioneered the motion-controlled gaming revolution with the Wii™ console and the Wii Remote™ controller back in 2006. Today the company unveils an even more immersive gaming experience: Nintendo 3DS™.
At the E3 Expo today, Nintendo gave the world the first look at a portable system that lets people view games in 3D, without the need for special glasses. Nintendo also announced a substantial list of upcoming games for Nintendo 3DS, the Wii console and the Nintendo DS family of systems – a lineup that reads like a who’s who of some of the greatest franchises in video game history with a completely new look and feel.
“The additional dimension of depth in 3D makes it easier for players to judge distances while giving developers a new tool to create games and experiences that play with both height and depth,” said Nintendo video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who pioneered the fully rendered 3D video game world with Super Mario 64™.
Nintendo 3DS comes with a 3.53-inch top screen and a 3.02-inch bottom touch screen. It has three cameras – one inner and two outer – to deliver the 3D effect and take 3D pictures. It includes a motion sensor, a gyro sensor and even a Slide Pad that allows 360-degree analog input. At the E3 Expo, Nintendo showed attendees a range of games and applications for Nintendo 3DS that reinvent some of the industry’s most beloved franchises. These include:
•Kid Icarus™: Uprising, the long-awaited franchise follow-up to the NES™ classic.
•Mario Kart™, which shows off the potential of driving and tossing bananas in 3D.
•nintendogs™ + cats, a new version of the best-selling nintendogs franchise that lets players interact even more with their virtual puppies – and kittens!
•PilotWings Resort™, a flying simulation that lets players soar above Wuhu Island.
•Animal Crossing™, a new installment of the charming community-building franchise.
•StarFox 64™ 3D, a game that demonstrates the true distance and depth of outer space using Nintendo’s well-known franchise.
•Steel Diver™, a new submarine-navigation game from Nintendo.
•Paper Mario™, which brings paper-based 2D environments to life.
Nintendo 3DS also comes to market with the strongest third-party support of any video game system in Nintendo history. Games on display at the Nintendo booth at the E3 Expo include:
•DJ Hero® 3D from Activision
•RESIDENT EVIL® REVELATIONS from Capcom
•The Sims™ 3 from Electronic Arts
•HIDEO KOJIMA’S METAL GEAR SOLID SNAKE EATER 3D “The Naked Sample” from Konami
•Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracles (name not final) from LEVEL-5
•RIDGE RACER® (name not final) from Namco Bandai Games
•KINGDOM HEARTS franchise game from Square Enix
•DEAD OR ALIVE® 3D (name not final) from Tecmo Koei Games
•SAMURAI WARRIORS® 3D from Tecmo Koei Games
•Battle of Giants™: Dinosaur Strike from Ubisoft
•Hollywood 61 (name not final) from Ubisoft
A sampling of other Nintendo 3DS games already in planning includes SUPER STREET FIGHTER IV 3D Edition (name not final) from Capcom; Madden NFL and FIFA Soccer games from Electronic Arts; CODENAME: Chocobo Racing® 3D and a FINAL FANTASY ® franchise game and from Square Enix; a NINJA GAIDEN® (name not final) game from Tecmo Koei Games; Saint’s Row: Drive By from THQ; Assassin’s Creed™Lost Legacy, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon™ and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory™ from Ubisoft; and a Batman game from Warner Bros. Additional games are in development by Atlus, AQ Interactive, Disney Interactive Studios, Harmonix, Hudson Soft, Majesco, Marvelous Entertainment, Rocket, SEGA, Takara Tommy and Take-Two Interactive.
Nintendo also announced a substantial slate of games on the way for its Wii console and Nintendo DS family of systems, with a list of characters and franchises that appeal to all types of gamers.
”If the video game industry had an All-Star team, Nintendo’s games would fill the starting lineup,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The combination of advanced interface and engaging game play broadens our appeal to all audiences. This is evidenced perfectly at the E3 Expo this year by the incredible new experience and controls that Wii MotionPlus brings to The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.”
Wii:
•The Legend of Zelda™: Skyward Sword: The game marks a turning point for the franchise, as the introduction of full motion controls enabled by the Wii MotionPlus™ accessory synchronizes player movements with Link’s actions while offering the most intuitive play control of any Legend of Zelda game to date. The game is scheduled to launch in 2011.
•Donkey Kong Country™ Returns: The classic franchise makes a return with new levels and updated graphics, but with the same sense of fun and excitement of the original. For the first time in the series, two people can play through the entire game cooperatively. The game is scheduled to launch this holiday season.
•Kirby’s Epic Yarn™: Kirby’s entire immersive world is created from different fabrics and textiles. Kirby himself is made from yarn, which gives him the versatility to take the shape of a car, submarine, parachute or UFO. The game is scheduled to launch this fall.

3DS came out, and the internets got all broken around here.
I honestly have no idea what Sony could possibly show that would top any of that. I think this year's E3 can easily go to Nintendo at this point, especially if the 3DS plays well on the floor.
I think the biggest contrast between this and Microsoft's presentation was the element of surprise. Yes, both companies showed sequels/revamps, but a lot of the Nintendo stuff was out of nowhere. Kirby, Donkey Kong, Kid Icarus (!)... all things that may have been rumored, but never 'real', as it were. Microsoft showed a lot of things that were already announced, which just makes it less exciting.
Also, I'm really glad that the success of NSMBWii has sort of opened the floodgates for more old school-type games. Side-scrolling Kirby and DK? Yes, please. :D
EDIT - Jesus, that 3DS game list is INCREDIBLE. That's the only possible word for it.

Well, I guess that gives me some time to continue to complete my DS collection. College was a bitch and I missed out on a world of titles that spanned two years.
I just got a hold of Gambare Goemon DS that came out years ago, and I have so much more, not to mention the new ones coming out too. Damn!

And Nintendo...goddamn...Kid Icarus. I'm really tempted to buy a handheld again.

I was very surprised by Nintendo. Zelda was weak starting off, but Metroid, Donkey Kong, Kirby, and Kid Icarus really wowed me. I think Nintendo far outdid MS this year. Still, it was weak on third party as usual, but then if you own a Wii you expect that.

BTW, Paper Mario got confirmed for 3DS, as did Super Street Fighter IV.
Paper Mario on the 3DS? Where did you see that? That is the most awesomest thing ever! And so perfect for 3D too. I mean, it's paper, in 3D. If you don't get why that is so awesome, then you haven't played Paper Mario/Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door. I just hope that it's a new game and not just a 3D-ification of the original, great though it was.

#2 - Kirby's Epic Yarn (VERY close)

Surely they are going to bring them over, they are huge titles with some serious production values backing them. Not to mention Xenoblade is actually doing pretty good in Japan (50K first day sales, which is good!).
Then again, we haven't heard if they are bringing over the second DS Fire Emblem title either, or even a mention of Pokemon Black and White. I'll remain optimistic for the time being lol :P

Didn't like Goldeneye? Also, most third parties have their own conference/event. Nintendo had a ton to show off and limited time to do it in. Nintendo doesn't have to rely on third party presence at their own conference like MS does.

I think I'm getting old. I really look forward to a new Zelda and Metroid but that's about it. I'll reserve judgment on the 3DS until I see it in person - it sounds really cool but I don't think you can fully understand it without actually playing it. I hope they don't screw up Kid Icarus.
I'm in the same boat pretty much. Kirby and DK look interesting but I can't shake the feeling that neither is going to offer anything particularly new or exciting. I've only been holding onto my Wii for Zelda and DQX and it looks like that trend will continue. However, now that I have seen the 3DS in black I am overwhelmingly excited for it. The launch lineup looks good, not great, and I am a little worried that we won't see as much interesting software as is available on plain ol' DS.
To be fair, I'm not particularly wowed by MS' offerings or what SONY has been up to lately. We'll see.
I'm worried about this as well. I was not impressed with Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks. If this ends up feeling like 'just another Zelda' then I'm probably done with the series for a while.

No, I didn't really. GoldenEye, really? Is this a straight port, remake, or what of the original? If it's anything but a straight port, then why get excited? We've already seen how a GoldenEye sequel flopped. If it's a straight port, then why are we all so excited? I'm happy to see it, but not overjoyed like some (and I loved it in its day).
As for not needing others, are you serious? Nintendo could have easily shown a 3-minute trailer highlighting some 3rd party games and been enough. They didn't. The only real 3rd party support to speak of was for the 3DS. Nintendo had a great show and addressed the issues from the last two years of not catering to the hardcore crowd, but they still fell short in 3rd party support.
