Oh well, I didn't even realize we had a Black Friday thread for the DVDs/Blu-Rays. I thought we just had the gaming thread here (I've been subbed to this $10 and under thread for a while and generally don't look in the DVD forum). In years past I haven't paid too much attention to the movie deals but with my new HDTV I've been looking at more Blu-rays.

As long as it isn't the Blu-ray versions that's cool. Now I can go to bed and not have my wife wake me in 3 hours. Nice!

If you can get them at the $5 price point i'd definitely get both because Dark Knight is a continuation of Batman Begins. They can stand alone, but Ithink it's best to watch one then the other.

It depends on your tastes, honestly. Both are very good movies. I tend to think "Batman Begins" is more of Batman's movie, whereas "The Dark Knight" is more The Joker's movie and Batman is almost a secondary character.

Needless to say I walked up to the check-out line very excited, having avoided all the lines and still gotten most of what I wanted. Until the cashier told me black friday deals ended at midnight and it was now 1 and everything would be full price. Fuck how did I miss that important little detail?

Oh definitely. If someone hasn't seen the film it is a must. I have 2 copies of the Fox/Lorber and decided to hold off because it doesn't seem the film looks that much better but now looking at the extras (the interviews) I'm tempted just because I love the film that much.

It's a condensed retelling and reanimating of the entire anime series, and 1.11 is the first part of what I believe will be four parts total. 1.11 is a re-release of the first part even, and it includes additional footage that wasn't on the first 1.0 cut and was encoded using the actual digital data vs. the original 1.0 encode which used the film produced from the digital data.

Seeing or not having seen the original makes no difference.

I received Close Encounters today. I can't comment on the video quality because I haven't watched it yet but the packaging is outstanding. Looks like something they took care in making. This is a 2 disc set and it also comes with a picture booklet. Inside is a mini poster showing the various editions of the movie and all the differences between them. It is packaged together inside a nice Blu-ray box.

Others have said the video is great too. This looks to be well worth the price and one of my favorite blu-ray purchases recently.

Now I have to go retail stores and search for a copy with the slipcover. Then you just buy the movie at the retailer with the slipcover, take the slipcover, and return the unopened movie.

I did that with Ninja Assassin and The Dark Knight. I just can't have a movie without the slipcover if I know that that movie has a slipcover.

I don't think any Blu-ray boxsets, even the ones that come in larger sizes, are as large as their DVD counterparts. It's meant to save shelf space by shrinking the footprint of the cases.

If you really care that much, just buy a DVD copy of Season 3, and then stick your Blu-ray discs in that box. Or the wiser choice might be to buy the previous two seasons on Blu-ray, since you'll probably buy future seasons of Mad Men on Blu-ray anyway.

I'm sorry to hear that (regarding Watchmen). I haven't been that bored with a movie since The Insider with Russell Crowe.

My rule of thumb is this: any movie that you like and have liked in the past, read about it on bluray.com to read about the transfer and stuff, and then go ahead and buy it. There's just too many to list. Obviously movies like Transformers, Iron Man, etc are going to look great in high def, but if you liked a movie like say...The Hangover, it's probably $10 at Amazon, grab it.

My issue while I deliberate and decide if I want them all or need them all is that the Carl's Jr code that someone else posted a thread about, the $3 off of select Sony movies, is not working on any of my films, some of which are Sony, like Superbad. Only "special feature" which has ever been on a US release of Neverending story is the trailer, and they couldn't even be bothered to transfer that over to the blu-ray. In Europe they had a nice special edition DVD with a 45 minute documentary and the German cut of the film.
