But let's be honest. It looks absolutely terrible. Surely something with this kind of gamer love buzz could have some TLC applied to it, but Activision is going to brute force them N64 textures right down your throat, baby.

I think it looks as good as The Conduit and a number of other FPS, that and its not complete yet, its only in alpha. I have faith in it, I know its popular to take a shit all over Activision, but I don't think this is one they are going to screw up.
Honestly, I'm buying it no matter what, so I'll reserve judgement until I see more.
In terms of it being Wii exclusive, a thought... Activision famously took a bath on 'Quantum of Solace', which they *fully* chalk up to the fact that it was very similar to and released around the same time as World at War. In an effort to avoid the same issue, GoldenEye is on Wii. Not only do they not have a conflict, they also have a 'shooter' game releasing on Wii (which doesn't get CoD games day-one) the same time CoD is dominating 360/PS3, maximixing Activision's November sales potential.
Honestly, though, if this is why the Live remake was scuttled, I'm not entirely happy.

For the record, I'd much rather have Craig than Brosnan. What a horrible choice for Bond he was, but, then, really the problem was that the franchise should have been shut down long before either of them. Certainly before Roger Moore, give or take a movie or two.

Here's the thing, Brosnan was Bond in Goldeneye. I suppose you would just have Brosnan airbrushed out of the movie and replaced with Craig too right? Pretend Brosnan never acted as Bond in "Goldeneye".
That's what Activision is close to doing with Craig as Bond in this. It's a complete slap in the face to real Goldeneye game and movie fans.

Bullshit.
This isn't Perfect Dark, or any other remake that has come before. This is a movie licence and, therefore, will always have these problems. Even if they re-released the original GoldenEye, I guarantee you that Brosnan would've been out, along with the rest of the cast. Actor licencing deals are tricky, and wouldn't have applied past that initial release. If they wanted any of the likenesses for those people (Bean, Janssen, Coltrane), too, they would've needed completely new deals, which likely wasn't financially reasonable.
This is also a trickier situation because Brosnan is, technically, the first Bond actor to be, ahem, 'let go' from the series. Everyone else made a decision on their own, but Brosnan was basically told he wasn't coming back. So, you have a guy that likely isn't very happy with the franchise, and a current actor who is hugely popular and has already signed away his likeness rights.
Whether you like or not, this, or any other re-release of GoldenEye, was never going to feature Pierce Brosnan. Me, I'd much rather have Craig than the nameless Bond of Agent Under Fire. So, look, stop with the whole 'slap in the face of *real* fans' train, because that's not what replacing Brosnan is. You want to get on them for making this instead of an HD re-release of the original? By all means, I can get behind that.
The Brosnan thing, though? Complaining for the sake of complaining.

I know it's a Wii exclusive, but here's to hoping it's just a timed exclusive and that it'll get a proper release on the PS3/360. I was a Nintendo owner from NES to Wii, but I just don't feel compelled to play the system anymore when I've got my PS3 sitting here with a backlog of games 10 deep.
Either way, I'll still at least give it a try on the Wii. If it brings back the great nostalgia of the initial release (Grenade launchers in the Complex!), I'll give it some playtime, for sure.

I'm still of the opinion that this is the result of a deal made during the whole GoldenEye HD remake debacle. From what I read, Nintendo was balking at a lot of it, and Activision wanted to keep them happy, since they were the biggest company. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Activision looked at it and figured they could make more money doing this than letting MS release the HD remake, all while keeping Nintendo happy. That seems to be the bottom line here... keeping Nintendo happy. Plus, Activision already has billion-dollar shooter franchises on the other two consoles, so I view this as a way to get a piece of the Wii pie.
So, I wouldn't expect it to show up anywhere else. Looking at it, they'd have basically needed to make two seperate versions to do that, and there isn't much of sign of it. There may be some sort of clause that states they can release it elsewhere if sales are abyssmal, but I'd say that's likely the only shot we have.

I could care less which Bond is in it (unless it was Timothy Dalton, he was an awful Bond). But as excited as I want to be for this, Nintendo's online multi-player system is such a mess that it's hard to be excited about anything on that. I don't buy online games for it anymore, and probably won't unless they fix it, which at this point looks extremely unlikely.

Also, some screenshots of it:
http://www.revogamers.net/galerias-1604.html
- New Jungle level, set in Africa (SP). Plane crash, stealth approachig to enemies, breakable covers, use your SmartPhone to aim auto guns to enemies.
- Different enemies IA phases. Music dinamically changes depending on action-stealth moments
- Online with experience points and ranks, unlock guns.
- Wiimote + Nunchuck not yet shown, but yu'll use D pad to change weapons, tilt the Nunchuk to take a look from the corners, Wiimote movement for melee atack, buttom for reload. They say they'll have loads of config options, sensititivity and whatnot for each control scheme, including a Gamecube controller one.
- You can mix your control schemes during MP. It can be 4 Wiimote-Nunchuk or 1 Classic, 1 Wiimote, 1 Zapper, etc
- Localized VA confirmed for Euro zone, including Spanish VA.
- Time trial mode will be there.
- Golden Klobb won't exist. Golden CCPro takes the spotlight, Wii Zapper compatible.

Look, I'll be upfront... I'm buying this no matter what. I have to, I'm a whore. I need to make that clear.
Anyway, rant time....
So, if you're changing the main character, updating the storyline to 2010, adding new levels (Africa WTF?), and FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGING the motivations and backgrounds of basically every character except Bond... then doesn't it CEASE TO BE GOLDENEYE?
I wanted this so much to not be a cash-in on name nostalgia. GoldenEye, as a film, could've easily been the background for another very good game. As it stands, this is just some random Bond adventure with, I'm assuming, a weapon called GoldenEye in it. Sadly, that makes this kind of just as bad as 'GoldenEye: Rogue Agent'.
The update to 2010 is what really bugs me, because it means that all the characters change. Trevelyan can no longer be the child of Lienz Cossacks and have the same motivations... you can't have old Soviet generals... it fundamentally changes the fabric of the plot. Shit, when they said Zukovsky was now going to be a nightclub owner in SPAIN who wants to buy/owns a soccer team? I just. don't. fucking. get. it.
Sorry, I've been meaning to rant here for a while, I just never got around to it. I still think this has the potential to be a good game, but it seems ridiculous to me that you release two Bond games on the same day, one original and one based on a film, yet the film-based one likely has as much to do with a real film as Bloodstone does.
So, fine, throw in the facility, throw in the dam, throw in 006 (is he still Trevelyan?)... but it's still just not GoldenEye. I'm trying to be optimistic, but nothing I've read so far about the plot has done anything to ease my fears.

First, let me say I totally understand where you're coming from, 007 (most appropriate username, btw). Why call it GoldenEye when it has almost nothing to do with the movie or the N64 game?
Well, for basically the same reason they stuck GoldenEye to the Rogue Agent title. They could've called it 007 or Bond or whatever but they called it GoldenEye. I suppose to Activision the name meant more than the movie and the game: it carried a reputation as one of the groundbreaking console FPSs, four-player splitscreen, and a ton of options. You could compare it to "Legend of Zelda" having less and less to do with Zelda, but the name staying nonetheless.
To the gaming world GoldenEye means a high-quality FPS and if Activision had just polished up the old levels it would be called a lazy remake to milk an old franchise. Mention the word "GoldenEye" and a gamer would tell you about 4-player shootouts in Facility, not a satellite and a rogue 006.
Yeah, I get *why* they're doing it, but it just doesn't make me any happier about it. Plus, the bottom line is that they're trying to sell it to gamers who, well, weren't really old enough to have been into GoldenEye when it came out. Now I feel old. Crap.
The decision will always baffle me, though, as I guarantee that they could've just let the graphically enhanced, online multiplayer re-release on the 360 come out and have made just as much, if not more, money than they'll make from this. That's what bugs me the most, is knowing that if this game is beyond terrible, it's the reason that re-release will never see the light of day, even though all reports say it was basically done.

It seems like 90% of the game that come out are not reviewed until release day . Fable 3, DJ Hero, Fallout New Vegas, and plenty of other solid games did not have any reviews until the day of release (or very close to it). I really hate this trend.

Reviews on GAF seem positive:
Finished the single player.
On a whole, loved it, and if you're after a more 'traditional' single player I'd say its the definitive Wii shooter. Its very well paced, looks fantastic, has great level design, is cinematic, and just all round fun. It's a very, very enjoyable game and I'm happy that practically all of my worries and concerns were dealth with in the right manner.
I quite liked the changes to the story, and they really did make 'more sense' for a modern era. I also enjoyed that while the game made some obvious homages to the original game, it also made some homages to the film. There are some sections in the game that were not in the original N64 release but were in the film, and its great to finally 'play' them.
If I had any complaints it would be that there seemed to be a huge difficulty spike in the last level, and that the level basically went the rout I was worried the entire game would go; waves of enemies and Call of Duty gameplay. It wasn't a bad level, as it looked great and was paced well, but it still had too many "WAVES OF INFINITE SOLDIERS OMG" moments for my liking.
I didnt' really like the Airstrip level either, for similar reasons. Thankfully pretty much every other level had a mix of forced action and stealth, which was where the game was hitting a sweet spot.
Also, while I liked the story changes I do think it could have done with a bit more story to tie it all together. Natalia was under used, so her character was never really sold, and I didn't like how similar (mostly both having short, black hair) her and Xenia looked. It would have been nice of Natalia had her red hair as per the film, if just to make the two have more striking visual differences.
I wasn't all that convinced by Trevelyan's reasons to harness the GoldenEye either. The reasons he had were fine, and great for a modern time, but it wasn't enough. He lacked the threatening persona of the film's Trevelyan, but I guess the whole Lienz Cossacks thing would not have worked well for this era. Still, they should have put something else in. Bond's reaction to Trevelyan's appearance at Statue Park was pretty weak as well.
Otherwise I loved it and look forward to playing through it again. Time Trials are going to be interesting. I tried the tank one out but raged hardcore, and I dont want to make myselef too angry at the game this early .

My honest assessment thus far, as of about halfway through the game.
It's a great Wii game. It's easily the best Bond game since Everything or Nothing. It fails spectacularly at being GoldenEye.
It's worth playing, but try and leave any memory of the N64 game out of it. They have literally nothing in common, which is a shame... this is a greatly competent original Craig as Bond game, and it really didn't need the GoldenEye name attached.
It's an apologist review, but it is what it is. Oh, and people complaining about the graphics? It's the Wii. This was never going to be an HD level title, and it's one of the better looking realistic games on the system. That just seems like complaining for the sake of complaining.

Played this today at a friend's house. I was using the Wii remote and nun-chuck vs 3 classic controllers and they were getting dominated. They were getting pretty upset after awhile . I was surprised that the pointer function would be able to work well in split screen.
Having experience from games like Metroid Prime Trilogy, Red Steel 2 and The Conduit helped a lot in regards to the controls (as long as you remember to turn the sensitivity way up like you do with all games that use the pointer). It was pretty fun but I think I might pass on this and wait for the Conduit 2 since it will have a lot more features from what I read.

I should have been more clear: if I point the remote to the far edge of the screen, does the player start rotating, or does the cursor stop at the edge of the screen?

I just finished the single player, and this is probably the best Bond game since, well, Goldeneye.
The best way to describe this is to say that this Goldeneye is like "The Dawn of the Dead" remake, while the N64 version is the original "Dawn of the Dead". Both are pretty good movies with the same idea, but the execution is completely different. Don't go in expecting it to be a lot like the original and you won't be disappointed.
I never ran into any glitches. The control scheme took a little getting used to, but I hadn't played a FPS on the Wii since the original Red Steel. The graphics were "meh", but I was having so much fun I failed to notice them after a while. For some reason, the shooting was insanely satisfying in this game.
If you are interested in this game, I strongly recommend a rental.

Split-screen multiplayer is disappointing. They were hyping this so much yet it contains only 4 modes (a fraction of those available online). Yes there are modifiers but I would've liked to play Black Box locally.
Played a bit of the single-player, looks pretty good. Game unfortunately crashed though halfway through.

What are the control scheme options for this game?

You can use Wiimote & nunchuk, GCN Controller, Classic Controller pro, and wii zapper.

This game is sick, bought a gamecube controller just to use with this, and it controls perfectly IMO...I like the wiimote control scheme too, but the GCN controller is excellent for this game.

It looks like I'm going to get the opportunity to try the game out this weekend. In the multiplayer, which gun is the most broke?

Shotgun. Went one-on-one against my brother and it's a one-shot kill even at some distance.
To clarify, he is much better than me and I was owning him with the shotgun. :D

When my Wii comes back from Nintendo, I'm down. I'm actually excited about the online component. Too bad there's no voice chat, but I sometimes use Skype.

Finished single player earlier today. I really enjoyed it. I stopped playing Black Ops to play Goldeneye. I really like being the only "hero"; compared to fighting along side a platoon of soldiers.

Surprisingly, I've spent a good 11 or 12 hours just online.
I'm finding it enjoyable and I'm not even a big FPS fan.

This. I like playing this game online for about an hour or two a day. I enjoy the leveling up concept and being able to customize the loadouts. Add in the variety of different games you can play and it's just fun.
I'm not a FPS guy by any means, but I am a goldeneye nostalgia childhood reliving type guy.

Picked this up on black Friday and so far I really like it. I am maybe 6 missions into the SP, so far the quality is surprisingly high. It's so nice to be able to use the classic controller for an FPS on the Wii, if you couldn't I don't think I would've even bothered picking it up. I also hopped into a quick MP game, that mode is also surprisingly well done. It has to be the best Online Wii game I've played (although really that's not saying a whole lot).
Does anyone know how many missions long the SP campaign is? I am just curious how far along I am.

Picked this up last night to enjoy the nostalgia. I have to admit, I'm very surprised at how well this turned out. My only gripe is that I had to crank the brightness up during the first mission. Also, using a classic controller is much easier than trying to use the wiimote and nunchuk.

Yeah I just finished it today and I really liked it a lot. The missions are fun and the locales are diverse making for slightly different experience every level. I also like how you can be stealthy in this one, there is almost always a way to go thru a level stealthily.

SPOT ON REVIEW
I'm a few hours into this game so far, using classic controller pro. The control scheme isnt terrible, not great.
I dont see myself finishing this game, only because its starting to become a little tedious to me. It is fun, but it doesnt deserve the title of goldeneye.
I'm going to try the nunchuck and wiimote control scheme and see if I like that any better

I was holding off on this game until it got really cheap, but then was unexpectedly given it for Christmas. I don't have a classic controller, I'll give the Wiimote a shot but I was wondering, how does the Gamecube controller work in comparison? Is the CC worth the money, or will the GC do the game justice? That C-stick nub has me worried...

I played through the game with the GCN controller. It works fine.

It controls fine for the most part. It feels like a kickback to the 90s. Is it worth $50? Maybe but $30 is a better price

Goldeneye is available at Costco for $30 because of an instant rebate. It's the version without CCP.

Just picked this up today.
Not bad, actually.
Only played about an hour - NOT online -.. and only with the Wii Remote/Nunchuk. Anyone enjoy playing this with the zapper? I have to admit, I'm not a big fan so far of these controls (Yes I've played with the settings). Looks like another Wii game that I have to use last gen's controller to play it with..
