I'm no stranger to the PS2 by any means. I had an XBox w/15 games or so, traded it in and got the PS2 and 5 games, ended up trading in all the games (pre-CAG) and got an XBox and a few games.. now I'm up to an XBox with 82 games and loving it..
But prior to the XBox, I had a tradition.. I got every GTA on the day of launch.. well, 3 and Vice City, anyways. I picked up GTA and GTA2 a while ago, but not on release. That being said, I didn't get hyped for San Andreas until about 30 minutes before release, and I did run and buy it.
Problem? Shouldn't be, my brother and friends have a PS2, I'll play it there. And play it I did. And I love it. To the point where I actually wanted to play it so bad that I had to watch "Friday" to curb the want. So Saturday, I'm (hopefully) going to get a PStwo with a game, and I need an idea on a game.
I don't want any recs that are multiconsole. I already have X-Men Legends, Burnout 3, THUG 2, MK:D, Silent Hill 4, Second Sight, Psi-Ops.. etc etc so on and so forth. I guess that I'm only looking for exclusive PS2 titles. Two that I'm wanting to play are Ace Combat 5 and Katamari Damacy. K.D. is probably my most likely one at this point, but I want to know other opinions. MGS3 will be cheat in six months, as will the new Rachet and Clank, Jak and Sly Cooper (I've never actually played any of those three, believe it or not). Is there any other titles worth getting besides Katamari Damacy? I like pretty much every time of game except RTS games. Anyone have any suggestions? Should I stick with Katamari Damacy?

Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne isn't a bad choice if you're into rpgs. Katamari Damashi isn't a bad choice, but it's not very long.

I'd just stick with GTA SA, I'm going to be hooked on that game for the next couple of months.

Katamari Damacy is a nice pick up for 20 bucks, you should get disgaea, la pucelle, phantom brave, shin megami, star ocean, xenosaga, arc the lad (super cheap good rpg), shawdow hearts 2, final fantasy x, suikoden iii, ICO is awesome too.

Gran Turismo 4
The Getaway
ZOE 1/2
Ring of Red
R.A.D.

Man that's scary I have every game you listed, but I can vouch that those are all great games to get.

Wow! Six replies already. Thanks guys.. you rock.
Haha, this is funny, I'm watching an old WCW event, and there's a commercial for Syphon Filter 2.. wow, that looks bad. Okay, on to the topic.

You know, honest to God, I've been aware of this game for the longest time, but I forgot about it. Does it really come out this Tuesday? That's awesome. I've seen some good things on it. Have you tried out the beta? Is it third or first person? How about destructable environments? I thought this game was many months away.. to find out it comes out Tuesday.. well, it makes my wallet sad. How about online modes?

How long? How's the replayability?

Well yeah, I'll be hooked for a while, but I need variety as well. I might just pick up LOTR: Third Age for Xbox, but I figure it's about time to explore a new system.

Ico would definately be on the to-get list. The types of RPG's I like.. FF2 and FF3 (American) SNES and Earthbound style. I'm not too keen on newer RPG's, though I love FF8. How is Final Fantasy X? Is the main guy too flashy? He looks like someone I'd get annoyed of very quickly. What are the main stories behind Phantom Brave and Star Ocean? Star Ocean probably appeals to me most.. just because it has a shiny cover. I love teh shiny. But yeah, I have never tried Ico. That's definately on the to-get list.

Well, whether they're top dog or not could be debated, but they have a bigger selection and variety of games, that's for damn sure. I'm going to pass on GT4. No online mode? No thanks, I'll stick with Forza. I used to have The Getaway, it was pretty cool. Not really a fan of ZOE.. what's Ring of Red and Rad? How's Suikoden 3 and Gungrave OD?

Yeah, it's a rough holiday season. I saw some older PS1 RPG's used at a local hastings for $9.99, like Chrono Cross. I think it'd definately be worth it.
Maybe I should get a PS2 and some older PS1 RPG's? It's going to be great to play Parasite Eve again, I LOVE the PE's so much.

Yeah the main guy of FFX get annoying but the side charcters like Orin make up for it, besides its the only rpg with graphics like that.
And most of the good PS2 rpgs are PS1 rpgs like the chrono cross you named Parasite Eve that you also mentioned and the Suikoden series oh and Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean, Grandia, and Front Mission 3
Oh and give in to the GTA SA you don't need to play anything else, it is all consuming.

I'm sure as hell not going to buy an RPG for graphics. The best games ever made so far have been in 2-D.

Well yes but its nice to actually see an RPG with good graphics and the gameplay is kind of nice. I'm just saying even though I hated the main character I rather enjoyed the game for many reasons.
Oh and Suik. 3 is good but the worst in the series and Ring of Red is like final Fantasy Tactics movement wise but the battles are real time were you choose when your guy attacks and moves and what not, its a very interesting concept, unfortunatley the stages get insanely long towards the end of the game.

Lunar 2 is a solid pickup if you want old PS rpgs. One of my most favorites for the psx. Nocturne has 4 different paths you can choose during the game so it has some replayability, the game is pretty long but I can't really give an hour count because that tends to never be correct. The game also comes with a limited edition soundtrack (well for at least now anyway), and the soundtrack is pretty good.

I don't really know that much about the game other than whats commonly known. The only reason I'm getting it is because I can get it at Gamerush for $29.99 w/1 trade-in. If I can beat it fast enough, I can trade it back to them for $35.
Gran Turismo 4
The Getaway
ZOE 1/2

RIng of Red is a strategy game kind of like Front Mission/Advance Wars. RAD is a mech game that is pretty realistic (giant robots  ) in the way you control the robot. Kind of like the Anime Evangelion. Each button on the Ps2 controller controls each leg and arm separatley. It's kinda jard to explain, but it's addicting. People say it's hard to find, but you can get one at gamestop.com.
Suikoden III I have only played a little but so far, it's a really good RPG.
Gungrave is cool, mindless action. You shoot everything on screen. Not much to it, unless you've seen the entire ANime Series. I loved the series and just wanted more Gungrave.
I said that SOny is the top dog, because of their sales and library. Even the most causal gamer has one. Xbox is catching up quick and will beat it this holiday season. That's why I said "for now".
BTW, I own all 3 systems in case you're wondering. I also agree that all the other games that have been recommended on this thread are great. I just didn't want to repeat what they said.

So.. pretty much like Devil May Cry? I loved playing DMC/DMC2 and blasting some NIN. It was awesome. If it's like DMC, I'll probably eventually pick it up. Does he have any cool weapons and whatnot? Guns? Swords?

Yeah, it's unreal. It seems like EVERYONE has a PS2.

Gungrave is fast paced like DMC, but I think that DMC has more depth and is better. Gungrave OD has 3 characters. One uses guns, one uses a sword, and the other shoots from his guitar. If it didn't have the Gungrave characters or story, I probably wouldn't own it. Also it's only $15 new.
I think many people bought a PS2 because it was the thing to do. Most of my friends don't even play video games and they still bought it. It's no longer "nerdy" to play videogames (GTA, SPorts Games, etc).

Kick ASS! That is my idea of a hot gaming session right there.
As far as some other good PS2 games, I'd recommend Frequency, Amplitude, and the Space Channel 5 set if you're into music/beat games; CastleVania: LoI (should enjoy it if you liked Devil May Cry); and some great PS1 titles like Puzzle Fighter and Next Tetris (best Tetris game ever in my opinion).
