View Full Version : SONIC Mega Collection PLUS...anyone getting this?

Is anyone picking up the Sonic Mega Collection? It is only supposed to be $20, right? and contains MOST of the old Sonic games....
Also, does anyone know if you can SAVE in these games now? If so, I will pick it up for sure....I hate having to play a game the whole way through without stopping.
You are talking about the PS2 version right? I didn't pick it up on Gamecube, mainly becuase I have (almost) all the games available on the disc. However, since they added more games to the new one, I think I will pick up the PS2 version, although I would rather have the GC controller for Sonic.

What's been added? I almost bought the cube version last week.

Honestly, I don't know. I was about to give in and get the Cube version too, but the new one will have new stuff. I will go try and find it now...the PS2 version is called Sonic Mega Collection Plus, BTW.
EDIT: There you go!
Expect to enjoy a redesigned interface and all-new bonus materials in addition to the following titles:

It is coming out for the XBox as well, I may pick it up
Here is another quality example of how companies (You too Capcom) give GC some exclusives, only to make "enhanced" versions on the other consoles. (Super Monkey Ball, Viewtiful Joe, Resident Evil 4, etc.) That really pisses me off. :bomb:

I got my Sonic Mega Collection on release date for cube and dont think i wasted money. Only thing that makes me mad is how they add all these games in as extras because it only discourages me from picking up titles i really like when it is first released.

Except for 2 non-sonic genesis titles, all they added are some of the game gear games found as unlockables in sonic adventure DX. Look - a game ported to the gamecube with added extras!

I don't mind games being ported to new systems, if their original systems are DEAD, but Sega and Capcom porting GC exlusives away from Nintendo is something I do not like.

Fortunately you're not required to like it. It still happens whether you do or not.
How about not minding books being translated to new languages if the original language is DEAD, but translating books while the original language is still in use is something to not like?

Got a 'cube version for $15 at BestBuy... I barely got around to playing it when I heard this new one was coming out.
I decided to cut my losses and use it for that "extra $5 per game" trade-in thing at EGbames. So I'm looking forward to this one... I never played all the way through the Sonic games when I was a little kid!

If you want to be pissy about it, my comment was IMO! And your book translation thing is clearly not the same thing. Capcom and Sega made these games for Nintendo EXCLUSIVELY, and I feel bad for Nintendo when they (Capcom and Sega) decide to port to other systems. It is good for Sega and Capcom, but it isn't for Nintendo. If they are going to make them multiplatform, don't begin by making them exclusive. Books are a different story, since the original writer would still receive money, as would the publisher who would sell the rights to translate the books. Many people agree with me, many do not. IMO.

Get a grip, Rig. The GameCube has been a lousy platform for third party publishers. Those publishers went out on a limb for Nintendo and failed to get any reward for their effort. In all likelihood, if Sega had released the Sonic collections and Monkey Balls across all three systems the GameCube version would at an even greater disadvantage. It was given a chance and came up short.
This would be like expecting Ubisoft to keep Rayman exclusive tothe Atari Jaguar after it was obviously never going to deliver a viable market for third party publishers. If the platform manufacturer isn't fronting the money for an exclusive one cannot blame a publisher for seeking to maximize the reach of their product.

I think it's more that people want a cohesive collection with this intact, and I don't blame them. There's no reason not to include it.

Supposedly was going to be included in the GCN version of Mega Collection, but pulled due to not being able to properly emulate the game.

I'm still debating to pick this up or not....I used to love the sonic games on my genesis back in the day...and $20 is CHEAP. Although, I don't really have the time to sit and play through a WHOLE game at once. I really wish they would put a save feature in games like this now.....I'm sure it would be easy as hell to do.

Yes, but it won't run on Win XP at all without a patch (which I believe someone just recently made one, not sure).

Do you think Capcom and Sega breached a contract they had with Nintendo and Nintendo didn't do anything about it?
The original copyright holders for the games (Capcom and Sega) still receive money, so don't worry on that account. Nintendo gets money for sales of titles on its platforms; Sony and Microsoft for sales of titles on theirs.
What's your problem? Did Capcom or Sega promise Nintendo unofficially that the games would stay exclusive forever? Did they maybe promise you the same thing?
Grow up. Nothing's wrong here. Each new port lets more people experience the games, just like each translation of a book. Your argument goes something like "if a company doesn't do something (release PS2/xbox versions) on a certain date (the gamecube version launch) they should not do it at all". It makes no sense whatsoever. Companies make money. Consumers buy products they want or need. That's a free market. Embrace it.

I may have to get this now.....saving is good
What differentiates Plus the most from its GameCube predecessor has nothing to do with content, however. You now have the ability to save or load your game anytime, anywhere, which, needless to say, can be tremendously useful. This process is hardly instant, though. Players looking for a pure gaming experience should keep in mind that this sort of saving wasn't present in the original games, and it might therefore be regarded as a kind of cheating. Then again, not every player wants to retry the notorious Death Egg stages five dozen times

btw, about Sonic CD:
It's a lot harder to emulate properly than you would think. This is an off-topic example, but look at Midway Arcade Treasures 2. Mortal Kombat II is over ten years old, yet they still had problems getting the sound to work right. And a bit more on the subject.... Sega Smash Pack, on Sega's own Dreamcast, had some HORRIFIC sound problems. Seriously, most of those games were unlistenable; I had to mute the sound on every one except Sega Swirl. Now the DC is less powerful than PS2 or XBOX, but is still 128-bit and technically a part of this console "generation." Whether it's due to actual hardware limitations or just laziness on the part of the developers, a modern piece of SEGA HARDWARE couldn't even get Sonic 1 right. Obviously they've perfected emulation on all the Genesis-era titles since then, but I'm not surprised that a Sega-CD game still poses problems. They could PORT (not emulate) the game and have it run with ease, but that would take time and resources... enough to make it a new company project entirely. Once they have EMULATION down, however, they can just throw in any ROMs they want, whip up a sexy user interface, and be done with it.

Anyhow, ended up picking this up today. Didn't necessarily need it, but Having most of the games in one place makes it worth it, I think (yeah, I own Mega Collection and Sonic Adventure DX for the Cube, but that requires switching discs! ;) ). Is there a Sonic Museum with concept art, history, trivia, etc, on the disc?...
Not really. About the same stuff that was on the GameCube version, only the comic covers go up to issue #130-something, a bunch of new artwork was added to the existing gallery, and the nifty high-quality version of the Sonic CD intro move and endings seem to have been removed.
I suppose they were replaced by the new viewable Sonic Heroes movies (the intro, and the first Team Dark clip)--three versions of each. Storyboards, early incomplete version, and the final. The Sonic Heroes theme placeholder they used in the early versions is quite humorous, as from the sounds of it, all the lyrics hadn't been written yet. So expect a lot of gibberish, and 'la's.
Sonic Jam had a much better extras section. :P
Also, not liking their choice of the GameGear games. If they were going to limit themselves to six of them, I really don't think the Game Gear Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine should have been included, nor Sonic Labyrinth--Why couldn't those two be Triple Trouble and Tails Adventure? :(
