My University is holding a surplus auction soon, and some computers are going to be up for grabs. My little sister(back home) needs a comp, but my parents don't have enough cash to replace our terribly outdated (talking 99 here) computer with something top of the line. So, I was wondering if anything on this list:

Would be a good target if I can get it cheap, and what price range I should bid up to. Also, any reccomendations are also welcomed. Thanks!

Outdated computers are bad. Up until two months ago, I was on a Packard Bell, made wayyyyyyyyy back in 1995! Man did it suck! The saddest thing is is that it cost $2000 back then!

Looking up model numbers is too much work for me.

However, I did see some P133 machines and up to PII 300 machines. Not worth much, and can't be better than what you already have.

I bought a P166 back in 96-97 when it was near top of the line. You do the math.

Nothing on the list is close to 'top of the line'. I looked up a few on EBay and the Gateway E-3400s seem to have the fastest CPUs ranging from 733Mhz-1Ghz. These came out in 2000, so they'd be slightly newer than what your parents have at home. If you're looking for a second cheap machine for browsing, WP, and older apps, you could try to pick one of these up for $75 or so. They're very usable, it just depends on what your needs are.

It's tough to say much more considering there're no HW specs. If you decided to bid, go for the one with the most memory/CPU speed. You may want to make sure there's a monitor included too. (If not, you can probably find one for $10 at a yard sale or something.)

You might consider one of the Apple G3s, but again, tough to say w/o the specs.

Yah, I remember buying a Pentium 1 100 mhz computer at Best Buy in 1995 for around $2,000. I thought that was the fastest thing ever. I learned so much on that comp.

Man I hated my Packard Bell. Everytime we would be on for anytime over half an hour, it would freeze. No matter what. and remember when 16MB of ram was a shitload?

Hot damn, I remember when my dad came home one day when I was a lad in '92 or something, carrying this "new" 75 fucking MHz Pentium.

I wonder whatever happened to it.

Fuck, my parents were cheap. My first computer was 75mhz in 1995. And it was Packard Bell. :puke:

Packard Bell was my first computer too. It wasn't much but my brother and I managed to squeeze out all the gaming potential that machine had to offer. The good old days (not really).

you can get a pretty nice pc setup from Dell most days for under $500...

No point in replacing junk with junk...

keep your eye on Ben's Bargains for great dell deals. Even the lowest of the lowend PC's will be 100x better than what you have now.

I agree. My Dell in the other room, I got for $350, and it came with monitor, processor, etc. It's also sturdy, reliable, and it's not preloaded with BS like HP and stuff.
