I have a dreamcast with a verizon username and password that gets me online for free. I was wondering if the playstation 2 can get me online with the same username and password.

I dont have an internet provider. it is just one of verizons local internet phone numbers with a username and password I got from a website. I got online with the dreamcast so I was wondering if I can do this for the ps2 too.

that sucks.
Sucks for you but it's good for the rest of us that no longer have to deal with lag from slower dial up connections.

that's true. which games use dial-up internet for online play?
not many. Amplitude and Final Fantasy XI and the sports games like Madden are all I can think of.

socom is a good game! does the game run slow on 56k?

It sucks not being able to play online when you have dial-up. Believe me, I know how sucky it is to have a 56k modem and have to wait 5 minutes for every page to load! Up until now, I dealt with it. I finally got a good deal on DSL, 29.99 for a year! Thank goodness for Cruzio. <3
Anyway, I think you're better off playing the old games on your Dreamcast online rather than the newer ones. Even though you can get online, your enjoyment of the game will most likely deteriorate after realizing how frustrating it is to play a FPS that drops lots of frames. If you can deal with it though, go for it.

Socom is broadband only, but dialups still manage to get on and I've heard it really lags the games.

The tony hawk games are 56k also last time I looked.

do you think that it is possible to still play smackdown vs raw with 56k if it is possible to do with socom?

If the matching process requires more than a 56k bandwidth you might not even beable to conect with your friend. But if it dosent and you;re only playing a one one one game it might work.
Keep in mind this is just theory I've never played the game before so I dont know what the interface is like or if it will auto block you on 56k.

$29.99 for a year? What the fuck? Dial up costs more than that.

I checked that website as soon as he wrote it. it said 29.99 a month not a year and it is only available in that town.

In theory, the Verizon username and password you have should work for PS2, as long as you set it up right from the Start-Up Disc under a dial-up connection with the "other ISP" option (don't choose one of the designated ones from the setup menu). I understand what you're talking about, and if you've been able to set it up and have it work on Dreamcast, PS2 should be a piece of cake. Just make sure you use a working access number, or the same one you use for your DC.
Lots of sports games support dial-up, including the latest ESPN 2K5 titles (NFL, NHL, NBA, etc). Outside of sports, I recommend the recent Tony Hawk games (THUG2 came out a little while ago), Amplitude, ATV Offroad Fury 2 and Twisted Metal:Black ONLINE (found in the TMB GH packaging or single-handedly at places like eBay).
A quick note about playing SOCOM and other broadband-only games under a dial-up connection, as mentioned: If you are able to do this and want to know some games that work well under this psuedo-broadband connection with minimal to NO lag, SOCOM is a bit of a hit-or-miss. I personally recommend Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, Auto Modellista (when there are people actually online), and Hot Shots Golf Fore! (which I haven't played yet) for its slow pace.
Good luck! See ya online sometime.
