Ok, just got my first xbox and I love the thing, wonder how I lived without it. So, my newfound love drove me to actually read the instructions with it (never done that in my whole gaming life (20 years)
Ok, it says you should remove the discs whenever you are done playing them. What I dont understand is, why is this BETTER than leaving a disc in the machine if Im going to come back to it (even if some time later) As I see it, each time I take it in and out is one more time the tray opens, one more time I am clicking the games center into its holder, one more time I am risking a drop or slippage which could cause a scratch. Why on earth is it so bad to leave a game in the xbox if Im sure it will be what I play next anyway? Any ideas or just thoughts on the matter fellas? Sure its not that big of a deal either way but its been knawing at my brain so I had to get some discussion going for my mental health. :P

Not sure. I left GTA3 in my PS2 for like three months (that's all I ever played) and when it came out, there was a bunch of junk on the bottom. Maybe it harms it when it's powering up.. I dunno. Good question.

You have a higher chance of wearing out your xbox. They are hoping the more you use it, the sooner something will get damage and the sooner they will be making more money from you.

Hmm, both very interesting.
I think I am leaning towards the scortch notion. Powering up seems a prime time for problems perhaps.
I dont think they tell you to do it just to wear out your xbox. They could come up with more clever ways to deceive you than that (say, pull out all the cords by the cords, not ends. Not mention the xbox needs to be in a well ventalated area, stuff like that.)

I always leave discs in my XBOX....hmmm.....
Maybe I should take them out, but I don't.
Especially when I play the same game often....like a season on NFL 2K5

If you leave a disc in your xbox and you pick it up and move it there is a chance that the disc could fall into the system

It's just so down the line if something goes wrong they can say "Aha! You weren't supposed to do that!"

That's my theory. Only time I bother taking the disc out is when I'm packing it up to take it with me somewhere. Though I forget to do that maybe 10% of the time. Come to think of it I packed it up this morning and I think I forgot to remove the disc...

This is a very good question. Have you considered writing MS? I'm curious if they have proven that power up with a disc wears out the drive faster. I find this hard to believe but it could be possible.

Freaking Xbox scratches the discs anyways, so no matter what you do, you're still screwed.

I dont think that my Xbox has every scratched a disk.

after recently taking apart my xbox I dont see a way that your disk is going to be sliding around the case. unless you removed the DVD cover.

I think its because your disc can collect dust while laying in the system, rather than the case.

yeah I've seen this question posted on other message boards, And the disk while in the drive will collect more dust then no disk in the drive. I'm willing to bet that it has something to do with static. But that is the answer. If you don't belive me call the 1-800 xbox help line and ask them.
