I don't work there anymore. I was working there while going to school full time. One of the reasons I disappeared from the GGT a little while back was me finishing school, quitting Gamestop, and getting a real job. It's understandable. Despite the awesome degree I got, I my job only requires two years of college. But eh, I'm just building up experience while continuing to explore opportunities (and go for my Masters).
Is Playstation+ worth it? I'm tempted to bite seeing how good the deals are this round and possibly later...

Way to ruin it for everyone, Joel.
If tick throws exist in Tekken 3, I was good at them. I beat my friend into the floor about 7 times over using 98% throws and counters. He got so pissed he stopped playing and went and sat at my kitchen table and started trying to do the calculus homework we had. I felt pretty bad. I think I threw a few matches after that purposefully when he started playing again. ^__^
I think it had something to do with the fact that whatever moves he was using (and I was blocking or dodging) had slow recovery so I was able to initiate the throws before he could input another move.
Shame I wasn't good with King and the chain throw timing, otherwise it might have been worse.
Which reminds me, I've never been able to understand throw escapes in Tekken -- and it's become an increasing priority for me as my good friend from work owns with King and does the 5+ deep throw on me almost all the time if he can connect with the first hit.
You should tell your friend to crouch or break the throws. It is simple in Tekken. A throw performed with Left Punch and Left Kick (Square and X if you are playing on Playstation) is broken with Left Punch. A throw performed with Right Punch and Right Kick (Triangle and Circle) is broken with Right Punch. Special or command throws are generally broken by pressing both punches together, but this varies slightly.
The way you break the throw is to press the appropriate button as the other character's arms are grabbing your toon.
As for King's chain throws, all of these commands are broken with either Left Punch, Right Punch or by pressing both Punches at the same time. You input the command as King begins the next throw sequence. Even if you don't have any idea what break to do, you should always be either hitting left punch, right punch or both punches whenever you are going to be thrown. You have a 1 in 3 chance of breaking said throw.
------------------
As a former tournament player in Tekken and some other games, I've had a TON of funny IRL ragequits. One in particular that comes to mind is this dude I used to call Senor Onion, because he would stink. He was a machine beater and a fight provoker (although he would always talk about wanting to fight, but never follow through when I didn't back down /machismo). He would sometimes wear a puffy vest without a shirt underneath it. This is when he was at his most ripe in stench.
Another guy was this dude we would call Angel Man. He was an okay guy, but we would obsessively choose Angel in Tekken Tag Tournament. I never saw him pick Devil (the standard skin for the character). He played ALOT and he always tried the same scrubby shit that would lose him matches. For those of you familiar with Tekken, he would always go for the eye lasers and flying eye lasers, which are a free juggle for any reasonably skilled player. Every match would end with him trying the eye lasers, me side-stepping and juggling him, and him have a suicidal look on his face as he walked away from the machine. I think a few times I tried to help him work on his game, but he wasn't receptive to criticism.
I also have a funny story about traveling to Reading, PA to play these kids from another arcade that were talking alot of shit on TekkenZaibatsu (a forum for advanced Tekken players). It was right when Dark Resurrection came out and no one from my crew had gotten the chance to play it yet, but these kids were practicing quite a bit. Me and 2 of my friends rolled up, and after a few casuals trying out the new characters I decided to pick Jack-5, who I was basically an amateur with (I mainly played Raven and Feng in Tekken 5). Long story short, I close out the arcade with Jack, never losing to any of these kids for the rest of the night. I am literally still beating these other guys as the arcade manager turns the machines off. The whiny bastards cried and cried and cried on the forums afterward and talked a TON of shit. It was funny.

I don't think it would be appropriate to have "Young Lara" with the massive airbags the "Older Lara" has.
I'm curious what the actual game is going to be like and if they are going rip off more than just Nathan Drake's outfit. IMO it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. I would like to see the complete elimination of fighting big cats, dinosaurs, and bugs, and more exploration/puzzles, with modern third person shooter elements.

I do barely any of the coding... you read it wrong (or i wrote it wrong).
The coders we have get hired as soon as we get foot deep into work, thus no one to code.
I have a ton of assets done of art for a number of games, but nothing yet to apply them to since each game that has started development loses its coder in some form or another -_-

Having coded (and still doing so badly), I can say it is super fucking hard especially after staring at text for over 5 hours. Same goes for artists, etc, except instead of text its either wave forms or 500 different shades of the color orange.

Like I said, I've been on both sides of that fence and coding takes a lot more effort, imo. I sure as hell wasn't good at art, but at least when I made something it worked and can be put into a game. Now, when you're making an engine, either it works or it doesn't. Hell, even when it does work, there's STILL going to be something wrong with it somehow. You have to seriously bust balls to get your shit working properly, whereas anything an artist makes can just be slapped in, even if it doesn't look good.
Don't forget about about all the research you have to do to get something you want to work properly, or coming up with algorithms to make your shit work the way you're asked to make it work.
It is soooooo annoying, but I still do it because I'm a dumbass.
Now, if we're talking about something like making a menu, then yea, it's probably harder for the artist. The backbone of the game, though? No contest, the programmer.

Depends on what your doing, for instance a Flash project where the artist has to make an asset with a lot of layers of MovieClip symbols embedded inside of each other, that can be quite complicated and requires a lot of coordination with other developers. Also in any fairly large company an artist is bound to have the game's art style reviewed by focus testers, producers, etc... and that can lead to massive changes in art that they have already done, sometimes complicated by the fact that different people are all trying to steer the art in different directions.

I mean I just used Flash as an example but in almost any type of development the way the graphics engine is constructed and the type of device your targeting will dictate the way in which an artist needs to create the assets (how to break them down, limitations on textures, limitations on palette, limitation on poly count, etc...), and so the artist has to learn how to work within those limitations and in conjunction with the programmers to make something that will both look good and actually work within the game.
In general I'd say that artists and programmers have an equal amount of challenge, the fact is that they have to work together, and often each side has something that they bring to the table which might allow a problem to be solved that the other group hadn't considered.

I would consider those limitations to be more stifling than anything. They seem to just be an annoyance. You're the one who has to make it work, they just have to follow a certain guideline.

Yes but their goal is also to make the game look good, so in much the same way a coder has to make APIs and their own code work and run correctly and efficiently an artist must work with the guidelines they are given to produce the best looking thing they can.
I mean obviously the challenges they face are different, but I wouldn't dare to say that one job is any easier than the other. Artists are challenged to explore and expand their own creativity, and programmers are challenged to explore and expand their coding knowledge and ability.

NNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't care now, I'm declaring that the coder has the harder job. Each job may have their own challenges, but I feel that the coder has the harder challenges. I do, however, believe good graphic artists are very rare, so I'll give them that at least. The challenges they each face, though, I'll always say the coder has the harder challenges.

Rumors state that FF13 development had another whole world completed for FF13, but development for the x360 prevented them from adding it to the final game. So instead of releasing it as DLC, SE might just release it as a whole new game, FF13-2.
Of course FF13 left a sour taste in everyone's mouths. Rather have FF13V instead of FF13-2.

FF13, FFV13 and FF13 Agito (an FF13-2?) are linked by the overall theme, "Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII."
So what the hell does that mean? They are all connected by a "vague crystal theme." However none share any story/gameplay elements with one another.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabula_Nova_Crystallis_Final_Fantasy_XIII
FF13 is clearly the case of hit or miss. More power to those that found it enjoyable. I found the gameplay to be a refreshing take on the old style of turn-based RPGs, clearly enough to warrant over 80 hours of gameplay on my save file. Though I do believe my IQ has been lowered by FF13's story.

I mean somehow FFXII, FFT, and Vagrant Story all take place in the same world, so it wouldn't be that hard to just say "same world, large time difference".
EDIT: Well according to that wiki page: "According to Square Enix, they all take place in the same world but in different time periods and there is no cooperation between the teams of the various titles, the only connection being a 'vague crystal theme'."

it doesn't. it's still linear (somehow an open field means non-linear to people), the only thing that changes is your ability to try different party make-ups. if you hated the game pre-chapter 10, you aren't going to suddenly appreciate it.
but if you did like it pre-chapter 10 -- then prepare yourself for gaming bliss

Nothing about story or characters was to my liking in 10; I liked Fran's character design alone in 12 (Balthier was ok, I suppose); and liked Fang/Lighting/Snow for character design in 13.

As a disclaimer, no Final Fantasy story is considered an Oscar award winning story.
(Final Fantasy X spoilers ahead!)
I believe the best FF story is Final Fantasy X. Keep in mind that I played the game 8 years ago, so going back and playing it, there might be some "wtf? moments."
FFX brought together two characters in an almost natural fashion, Yuna and Tidus. Through their journey they share with one another their past. As the story unfolds, Tidus grows to care about Yuna. However unlike most stories where the hero always loves the heroine, Tidus's love grows from a past that he had no control over, his father Jecht. In clear heroism fashion, Tidus is willing to give up his life for something his father did, so that he could protect Yuna. The combination of a very well done voice acting (for its time), followed by very little "cliché" video game moments, makes FFX's story one of the better ones. Unlike other FF games where the love is there for the sake of it, FFX was actually able mature the two characters thoughtfully. The questionable design of the game is Tidus pants though. Who the hell wears half pants?!
Now it has been awhile (8 years?! I was 15 when I played it!) So it might not be as great now as I remember it, but for its time, it was a very well done game overall. I mean come on, I spent so much time playing blitzball. Signing that one godlike goalie to a ridiculous contract was the best move I had ever made. Oh yes, the RPG elements were very well done. Being able to change character during battle was refreshing. Having a “party” has always annoyed me. Everyone is apart of this journey, why can’t everyone join in the battle?
Runner-up: FFXII
FFXII was homage to Star Wars, with a slight main character twist. Luke, I mean Vaan never becomes a Jedi per say, but makes due with being a Sky Pirate. Which is cool, because he gets to hang out with Han Solo, I mean Balthier.
Now that I look back on it, I've always found something to enjoy about the past Final Fantasy games (7-13, not including the spin offs). This is not based on story but rather something that each FF game had done exceptionally well with.
FF7: For being a true EPIC with still the coolest summons. Knights of the Round Table!? Awesome. There was just so much to do in this game that I had multiple save files so that I could go back to play the mini games whenever I wanted.
FF8: How do you one up Cloud’s Buster Sword? GunBlade. Okay in seriousness, the open world ship controls and the freedom of the conjunction system. The card mini-game, SE needs to make it a real card game. Getting Laguna’s card was SO worth it.
FF9: An ode to the Fantasy in Final Fantasy. This was a clear winner for those that grew up with to the Pre-FF7 games. The half size people in 3D might not have cut it for most people.
FFX: See above
FF11: Oh it’s an MMO? No comment, didn’t play.
FFXII: Stars Wars like story, rich style and creative battle design (gambits). Dragon Age: Origins ends up copying this battle system.
FFXIII: The convoluted story. I had no idea for the longest time that what a Pulse fal'Cie, Sanctum fal'Cie, Pulse l'Cie and a Sanctum l’Cie were. That combination with Hope made the first hours of gameplay a bit of an annoyance, but being the best Ravager, Medic and decent Synergist made me get over him being a cry baby. The art style, music and parts of the gameplay made it worth while. My gripe about the gameplay was that my characters never felt “strong.” I think it is a poor choice to have to finish the game before the characters could actually become strong. Also, the game NEEDED gambits. Scanning the enemy was not a good design. Once I read through all those chapter re-caps and got to the really big room, “world,” I started to enjoy it a lot more. FF13 is an example of ambition. The developers knew what they wanted to do, however putting it together was a mess. I NEED the soundtrack from FF13, stuff was good.
I love RPGs. For some reason Final Fantasy games never feel like a chore for me.

12-17-2010, 07:14 PM
Well j-cart, for mentioning X and XII so fondly I can't sit here and argue against you. :applause:
I mean, I don't look to FF stories for some deep musings on life, or for something engrossing like you'd see in Planescape Torment. It's an adventure with simple themes that a wide range of age groups can appreciate, with well developed characters that people can relate to.
I understand how people find XIII convoluted but what's cool about it is that not even the characters know wtf is going on. Which is why I found the ending to be pretty epic. Hating Hope or Vanille because they are annoying children is also understandable, but isn't that just more credit for them being realistic? :bomb:
I don't know, I was big fan of the party split ups -- kind of reminded me of VI. The eidolons made for great moments for each character, and aside from some hammy dialogue, I thought the entire thing was very creative and powerful.
And VII and VIII were much harder to follow than XIII IMO. What's funny about XII is that the developers admit to being influenced by a bunch of sources but said Star Wars was never considered.

No person has ever acted like Vanille, and in real life any Hope would have confronted Snow 999 years earlier. Those characters were not reallistic.
From what I've played I definitely agree with this. Hope is pretty much my most hated character in any RPG ever so far. He is like the quintessential example of every whiny annoying JRPG teenager ever.
I do enjoy Vanille's character specifically because she is like an alien though. She seems as if she doesn't understand how humans act properly. And she constantly switches between an American and Australian accent, which confuses me even more. And she also changes between being excited about moving forward, to being excited about running away. Her character just doesn't make sense. In any other game I would hate her, but in this game, she is the only character that has stopped me from falling asleep so far. I am constantly just amazed at how absolutely crazy she is.
And while I'm at it, here's my impressions of the rest of the characters after the first 10 hours or so:
Lightning - so far she seems like a generic Cloud rip-off without much of a personality. They want her to seem cool by making her mostly silent and seem angry all the time. Hopefully her character will evolve beyond that.
Snow - I can't stand him. Not only is his name "Snow", but his character design is such a failed attempt to look "cool" that I'm not surprised at how generic and annoying his personality is. If he mentions one more time that he will do anything to save both Cocoon and Serah, I think my head will explode. I'm really glad he has been out of the party for the last few hours.
Sazh - He's actually somewhat likable I guess. Nothing too special, but he seems like the only reasonable/relatable human being in the game, with a developed personality. I'm also interested in finding out more about his backstory.

Ah, you guys are so boring.
I really liked Lightning's character, and I liked how they put Hope there for her to be a big sister to -- as she failed at being Serah's. Gapra Whitewood was a great part IMO. The character development is well done and fairly simple, this stuff isn't hard to miss people.
This reminds me of when everyone was bashing Squall for being the typical "I'm too cool for you" douche. But when you actually look at the characters around him, he has every reason to be an asshole to them. He was a really well done character (well, until the game went off the deep-end half way through).
Yeah, Snow has a bloated ego and an unrealistic outlook on life. He comes to terms with that in the story. Hope is childish and insecure. He comes to terms with that. Fang has a trust issue with everyone but who she's already familiar with. She comes to terms with that. Lightning thought she could protect her family with a tough attitude, etc...
This game is made for young kids too, guys. Not hard to follow.

You compared the situation with Lighting to the situation with Squall, but I don't think that Lightning's mean attitude is in anyway justified by all the characters around her. She simply ignores everyone else most of the time without even answering simple questions. It seems like they are trying too hard to make her seem like the cool silent protagonist, but they ended up making her seem childish and mean-spirited to me.
And the story and characters aren't hard to follow at all so far in my opinion. The dialogue is just poorly written, and the characters aren't very interesting. Pretty much every one of them has been done a dozen times before, and done better. Ten hours in, and the characters haven't done anything to change my first impressions even the slightest bit.
And the story hasn't done anything to make me care about the main quest either. I hardly know anything about Cocoon or it's inhabitants, so it's very hard for me to feel compelled to save them. The game tries to throw you into the story and make you care, but it hasn't actually shown me enough of the world for me to get sucked in. And Vanille's narration just feels awkward. It's like they weren't sure if they wanted to add narration or not, so they only give her lines to narrate once in a while.
For me, the characters and story are the most important part of an RPG. Very rarely does fun gameplay make up for an RPG that lacks in both of those departments.

People were putting that Cloud label on her the moment the game was announced. Yeah she's a badass, does that automatically equal JRPG trash nowadays? I brought up Squall because that's the same thing people associated him to as well.
30 minutes into the game she's already showing signs of regret and compassion. 2 hours in she's punching Snow in the face because she hates herself, not him. After that she takes Hope under her wing. I can start spoiling things after that if you'd like.
Am I calling that deep? No. It's FF. But I don't think a lot of the games deserve half the bashing they receive.

I don't mean to bash the game so much as I'm not that far into the game, and I'm not saying that badass = trash, or even that a Cloud rip-off is bad. I'm just saying that her character seems to lack anything to distinguish her from all the other characters like her. For example, my first impression of Kaim in Lost Odyssey was generic Cloud rip-off, but in that game you learn a lot more about him that actually fleshes him out as a unique character. So far in FFXIII, I haven't seen Lightning care about anything other than her sister. I guess my main problem is that for a game that tries to strip out a lot of the extra bits in JRPGs in favor of telling a story, it is moving awfully slowly in the character development department.

Yeah, I'll try to stick with it for as long as I can. Some of my favorite games are ones that I hated for the first few hours. (Dragon Age comes to mind. It was my GOTY last year, but I hated the origin part).
It's just hard when there isn't a single character so far that I really like.

You don't have to be a fan of the story/characters, to each his own. But if you haven't noticed the plights/developments of each character by now, I'd say the game has no hope of bringing you back into the story.
XIII devotes an equal amount of time to each character, Lightning is hardly anymore a main lead than Vaan was. They want to you to understand each character, introduce the eidolons that represent their deepest problems, and prepare you for an ending that is more themed around the strength of the human spirit as opposed to 1 or 2 characters' personal confrontations. I think this is why some like other FF plots and not this one. It's more about humanity and not "ooooh no! Aerith!!!"
Examples of actually shitty FF characters would be Zell and Selphie. And I haven't played VII for a long ass time but I don't remember Aerith meaning anything to me. She was 10x worse than Vanille.

Well I've noticed the character's plights, as you mentioned, I just don't like the characters. I see their problems and the ways they react, but I can't sympathize with them. And I don't think their plights are in any way unique, so it's hard for me to get interested in them.
Also, so far I've only gotten two eidolons, but I'm not quite sure how those represent their problems, so maybe you could explain that one to me?

She meant something to you when you used her exclusively as your mage/healer, then the you know what happened. I had to resort to item pots for awhile after that.
ihadFG: Slight spoiler They come when the L'cie lose hope. Basically it is meeting their end, but with the help from others, over coming their eidolons gives them hope in their journey. Deeper spoiler Meaning that they don't have to succumb to their "focus." In the end each one is there to help one another. Despite them thinking they don't need help.

Well, I mean when they appear, it's at a meaningful moment.
Lightning's for example, activates the moment she decides to leave Hope to fend for himself as she goes off to fight people for no reason (giving up on life, basically). She ends up saving Hope, confronting the eidolon with him, and then becomes a big sister figure to him as he enters his primary dilemma. Gapra Whitewood was a great part because it's where you see a different side of her -- she's encouraging and caring. Her battle-dialogue even changes to lines that cheer on Hope. She's very different from that point on. Doesn't mean she's going to stop kicking ass though.
GGT is getting DEEP!

Tifa all the way! I didn't find Aeris annoying, but I didn't care for her either. When she died, I just started using Red XIII as a healer/mage for the most part.
