Agree with Shipwreck on the whole Penny Arcade thing. It's being blown way out of proportion.
Kind of hilarious that it's caused such a stir, considering how many things that are usually infinitely more offensive to people have been on Penny Arcade's comic. I thought the Dickwolf strip was pretty funny to be honest. Not because rape is funny or any bullshit like that, but because I'm an MMO/RPG fan and it's just one of those oddities with the quest structure in most games that you encounter.

The comic strip wasn't even focused on rape, it is being completely blown out of proportion, of course, by saying that I'm just a rapist apologist.

bah sounds like Cao was right?
Anyway good show. The hour is fine when it's not full of the potty humor crap. I like the predictions segment too. Keep doing that.
And agreed with all the praise for Dead Space 2 so far. I'm only on chapter 4 but so far it's a very good game.

As for the shorter show, I personally liked it since IMO there was a better balance of idle chat and actual content.

A "dream portable" where a person can take the exact same game from console to hand held and share saves . . . I enjoyed this years & years ago, TurboGrafx's Turbo Express. It's still in my basement somewhere.
sonic the hedgehog!...is my guess, because wizard of war sounds like Epic games version of harry potter.

Hey Cheapy,
Can you throw your U.S. listeners a bone here regarding the contest? I listened to the podcast first thing this morning when I woke up. I almost drove off the road on the way to work when I heard the Wizard of War sound effects. I rushed into work to post but someone at 0200 had posted and, I think, is on the other side of the world. I used to play Wizard of War all the time at the local pizza parlor.
How about a little something for your U.S. fans?
Good show. Prefer the longer ones..of course.

Everyone seems to be ragging on the NGP for being to console-ish, even though i agree, I notice that everyone seems to think that equates to failure. Now that Sony has a portable that does console graphics and has two sticks, how has no one come to the conclusion to the end all be all...? Four words. Call of Duty Portable. Even if it was just a port of Call of Duty 4, you'd have to imagine that would outsell a 3D Mario.

Great show. I have to say I kind of liked the shorter format, sometimes things get a little bogged down and I kinda zone out while listening. It appears I'm alone in this opinion though.
Also, why do you have to read disrespectful listener comments? I made a similar comment regarding the death of the racing game genre last week but my comment was civil and respectful. I guess those just aren't as exciting to read on the show.

The NPG is already a failure in my mind.
It has way too many specific features on it.
Games available for it will only underutilized the features, because they will all just be ports.
Developers would be nuts to spend the money on an NPG exclusive.
Sony's isnt known for its long list of successful handhelds..
With all the features they're packing into this thing, the price is going to be expensive.
On release Sony loaded the PS3 with tons of features too. It bloated the system to incredible costs, and they are still in this frame of mind with the NGP.
Havent they learned anything??
This thing is doomed before it gets out of the gate.

It wasn't just short, but too much time was spent on the whole Penny Arcade "controversy." Take that out of the CAGCast, and I think it would be the first podcast with a negative running time.
But, that being said, I still need my CAGCast fix, and nothing is better than something. Strike that; reverse it.

02-03-2011, 11:40 AM
Too bad about the short show, but we did lose 10-15 minutes right off the bat since there were no new games.
Agree with Wombat's points about the NGP. It needs to leverage it's controls and other tech to create something AMAZING that you can't play on anything else. If I can play it on a PS3 at home I'm not interested.
Even then it will be a tough sell at $400.
Great show...longer is better though.
Handheld talk: U guys real quickly mentioned that the NGP would probably have a PSN type store...but actually I'm thinking the key to success would be to have the same PSN store.
It looks like Sony is adding all the PS3 titles to the mix like Uncharted, Killzone, etc. but....I always thought the first company to do an Arcade store on the go would win the handheld front. Games like Limbo, Costume Quest, Bionic Commando ReArmed, and Shank among others are perfect for on the go gaming. I think older games like Crazy Taxi and Rez would work well too. The games are already all digital and saves could be used cross platform pretty easily. It would be nice to have trophies\achievements stay the same across platforms as well. Plus it would be nice if you bought it once you could have the game on both platforms.
I thought Microsoft might do something like that with LIVE Arcade but then we got Windows Phone 7.

I think comparing Dead Space 2 to RE 5 is somewhat unfair given that the latter is almost two years old already, and was designed first and foremost as a co-op campaign game, something which Dead Space 2 lacks entirely.
Vanquish is a recent Japanese game in the same genre which stands up to DS2 in terms of graphics and gameplay, even if it's lacking in content.

Nice job. My guess was going to be Life Force on the NES (I know Cheapy loved the Gradius games.)
In regards to the NGP discussion, Sony is opening up PSN to Android devices so they're going to be able to play at least PS1 games on and probably PSN specific games also. Then the NGP will work with any game currently on PSN, including PSP games bought on PSN.
My hope is Sony or Logitech wise up and release the long-rumored UMD reader for the NGP since people like me have a large UMD collection (I built most of my collection from Goozex but still I have a large UMD collection.)

I'm guessing I speak for a lot of listeners when I say I don't tune in to get the new releases and a quick video game news recap. The shortened show mostly left the parts of the CAGcast I can get from any website or podcast and sacrificed a lot of the banter and sidetracked conversations that make it unique and entertaining. Keep the run time long enough to sound like you're having full length casual conversations, and not compressed to where it sounds like you need to hurry on to the next segment.

Good show. I like the short shows especially during busy weeks.
Anyways, I think the NGP "PS3 on the go." is kinda stupid. Especially transferring saves from the PS3 to NGP - your saying we would be buying the game twice to transfer a experience from a console over to the handheld? Either way, the whole thing that bothered me with the PSP was a lot of the games (till recently) were watered down portable games similar to their console versions. I like how in recent years the PSP had some unique game and had lots of JRPGs.

I agree short show was not as good. I like to listen to the podcast in the car that way it takes all week to finish it. I was done today. By the way I've never heard of Wizard of Wor but I bet they reuse a lot of those sounds because it sounds an awful lot like galaga.

OK I have to actually put my 2 cents worth in on the whole Penny Arcade "thing".
It was abviously meant to be a look into the obsurdity of some people being so focused on the "task at hand" other than to help someone out of one of the most horrific situations possible.
I took it as the slave's situation as gravley serious and the "hero's" situation as obsurd and self absorbed. The funny part is that the hero is too self involved to help someone in real need. (but lets face it, it is just a game and not real people)
But, like many things in life, it is up to you interpritation.
I cannot fault people for having an opinion, but I can help them look at the big picture instead of only 1 small part of something.
I will stop now, because I could go on with this for a long time.

LOnger show or shorter show? I just want a good show.
If it takes you longer or shorter to make one doesn't matter. On my Ipod I can skip ahead. Maybe I'm the only one that has one of those kinds of ipods.
Dick wolves? My only memory is the name sounded kind of in poor taste. Penny Arcade has been running a somewhat fine line of donating games to sick kids and then doing sht like selling Dick Wolves t-shirts on the side. What's next the Porn industry doing charity events for grade schools? Ok i wish porn industry was fund raising for my 5th grade playground back in the day.
NGP? Should have made it larger. 5 inches ain't enough. Big ten inch is what I'm talking about.
Much like no one takes their SUV off-road I doubt many take their PSP off-road either. AT least in America. And so make the hunk of plastic tablet-sized. 10".
Guess what? All that graphical power? You can now see what it is capable of. YOu can see the details. A baseball is bigger than a mosquito. You don't have to squint like Sanford's chef. The thing is a much better movie device with that big of screen as well. Matter of fact, a 10" screen from 12" away rivals a big screen tv from 10' away in terms of relative size. And you much have less competition at this size. There is no dedicated gaming device this size. And the tablet market is just getting started and so is less entrenched than the ipod. iPHone, Android and 3DS. Win, win, win....
Create a new market Sony. I bet you could take away console sales with a device like this.
ON top of it this thing would be a great surfing machine. Great map display with that gps. GReat device for Sony's target PSP demographic which was 13-17 yr olds who don't have a TV in their room.
btw, I think Sony knows the NGP might have trouble getting software support. That's why there is that Android PSN SDK. They want folks to develop games for this thing first and then be able qualm their fears (developer/publisher fears) by making it easy to port games to Android. Or even vice versa. They also have that Android PSP phone of course.
Just my $1.725.

I own a PSP Go and that was $250, I don't know if I'll be happy or mad if the NGP is that price.
Also, I'm a huge Lumines fan, but as a Go owner I cannot get this game. It's not offered on the Sony Store and I agree this is one of the must play titles on the PSP but apparently Sony doesn't seem to think so.

I bought Lumines because of all the hype and didn't enjoy it at all. Having to start from the beginning every time (even in Vs. mode) isn't my idea of fun.
I believe the original PSP actually came with a 32 MB Memory Stick PRO Duo. I used that to save PSP games on for a couple of years until I got a 512 MB stick for about $60.

the shortened show was good for "today" as i only had an hour to work out.
i like the 90 minute show.
the ngp (psp2), like wombat said, needs to carve its own niche. i have a feeling its going to be about 400 bones if it does come out at that price, then it needs to be bundled with a game. way out of my price range for a portable. if sony says that you can be playing a game on your ps3, then this unit will have the ability to let you continue playing if you leave home. so for this luxury i will have to purchase the ngp version of this same game. eff that

Wombat, in order for the NGP to succeed, it needs its' own Pokemon. Until they get that, Sony isn't touching Nintendo's pie cooling on the window sill. Monster Hunter can't do it because it doesn't have a big enough appeal outside of Japan.
jh6269
02-03-2011, 09:44 PM
Ok, concerning the NGP. You guys totally forgot about the PlayStation Suite (for the Android platform) part of the whole Sony media event. So, they're going to have a mobile platform along with their NGP. Also, I see no reason whatsoever that any game on the iPhone could not work on the NGP. Sure, the form factor is bigger, and it's not as portable, but the NGP can do everything the iPhone can do, but it can also do everything a PSP can do too.
I love my PSP for more in-depth games like God of War. My wife and I only have 1 TV, and I can play my PSP while she watches Netflix. Also, my wife is a scientist, so I take the PSP to her lab when she works late hours and on the weekends. I don't think Sony needs to make a niche per se, but they do need to make the platform accessible to any developer.
I also disagree with Shipwreck about the cost of making these games. I don't think it will necessarily cost any more to make games on the NGP than it will for the iPhone or 3DS (unless they choose to make the game very complex and have stunning graphics).

Agreed. Wombat you don't have to sound like a parent talking down to a 5 year old when you want to make a point. Practice talking faster or something. Anything.
Also, did anyone else think in that video of the NGP unveiling when the guy was showing off the touchpad on Little Deviants, it looked like he was diddling a girl? Or is it just me? The NGP seems perverse in a way that only Japan can do.

At first I wasn't sure about Shipwreck being on, but now he's an absolute requirement. This is still my favorite video gaming podcast, after all these years.

Good show, but an hour? You know how miserable my job is? Only taking an hour out of my day of not thinking about numbers sucks. Three hours is much more pleasing.
And am I the only one that thinks dickwolf sounds like someone who's sniffing out dicks? If you take that word out of context of the rape comic, I don't see how that's upsetting to women. If anything, it should be upsetting to other men. Unless a woman wore the t-shirt. Different story in that case.

Also watched my son play Dead Space 2 all the way through. Plan to experience it myself this weekend. I agree game of the year contender.

Cheapy D, i can relate to you quiting game, But i dont quit. Ive been play Mass Effect 2 (ps3) on insane difficulty. Died a bunch of times recruiting Mordin. It was not because of the difficulty but mainly lack of knowing the area and bad squad positioning. Then i jumped into recruiting the spector from ME1. This is where i got stuck for not doing weapon upgrades and researching other worlds. So i set the difficulty back to Vet. Anyways what i wanted to say was that i find Mass Effect 2 boring during fire fights on the veteran setting. I can pretty much run down any enemy. It just weird for some reason, this game is awesome in insane, idk i guess its just me.

Often my favourite parts of the cagcast is when you go in depth into a subject or game. I think you should just talk feely and not rush or extend conversation just to hit a time constant. If there is nothing going on then don't force an hour and half show, Equally don't rush through just to keep it shorter.
On a side not I really wish you would do more extended segments at the end of the show. You did it once with Allan Wake and never did it again. I think dead space would be a good contender for this.

When you guys first mentioned the idea of a shorter show, I thought maybe it was a good idea since your shows run on a little too long sometimes. However, this show felt really rushed and should have been longer. It's not about the size of the podcast, it's about how you use it.

Don't get your panties in a bunch, they didn't mention Mass Effect 3 either, which is obviously important to the CAGcast crew.
I don't know how anyone could read anything into that ridiculously short list. This fall could potentially have over twelve 90+ rated games:
Batman Arkham Asylum
Battlefield 3
Call of Duty 8
Dark Souls
Diablo III
Elder Scrolls V
Gears of War 3
The Last Guardian
Mass Effect 3
Rage
Uncharted 3
Zelda Skyward Sword
And that's the fall alone and doesn't include titles that may make the year like Metal Gear Solid Rising or a new Assassin's Creed. Plus you can already put down Saints Row 3 as Cheapy's game of the year.

Kojima's idea of Metal Gear on the PS3, then taking it on the go on the NGP sounds pretty appealing...IF you don't have to buy a second copy. If they do something like DVD/Blu-Ray movies, where buying the game includes a digital/SD card copy of the game, that may work out - and keep gamers from buying games and spending money on other devices. (Makes sense, eh?)
Big difference maker is the dual analog, which was sorely lacking in the original PSP design. No sacrifice, unless the controls blow.
As Ship says, Lumines was definitely THE game for the PSP. It came out on release day and you couldn't put the thing down. Only much later did it see Xbox, etc. I'm sure Crisis Core fits the bill for many folks, too.
Wombat - seriously, a "must play" game = "your life would be empty if you never played it"? (So talkin' out of your ass! ;-) Give us ONE game that fits that definition. C'mon - you can do it!
Regarding the NGP, as jh6269 says: Playstation Suite. I also anticipate a lot of games being developed for the iPhone will find their way into a "mini" type of PSN store, we've also got cross-platform with Android, they'll have dual analog support in addition to touch screen, and be priced accordingly.
But will it sell? If it comes out around the holidays, has a strong suite of games, isn't priced too crazy and gets sufficient hype, it'll sell.

I agree with Wombat on the NGP. I would buy it if they only had versions of MLB The Show, Madden, & NHL that I could resume mid-game and some version or Fallout or Elder Scrolls. I don't care about anything else the system does. Just give me some games that are as easy to play as a console game, look great and I'm sold. Don't get me wrong, I still waste plenty of time on Infinity Blade, Cartoon Wars, etc., but it's only because there's nothing better out there.

Good show, I liked the talk about the portables coming out.
They really do need to design games based around the hardware not remake console games. I don't want to play an uncharted game really on a portable. Unless, I can play a ps3 version and then sync with the NGP and carry my game on the road and play. Syncing games from portable to console for me would be awesome. Do you guys think that is something we will ever see or is it just too omgbbq cool to ever make?

I was thinking the same thing about the Android platform.
As for people "not wanting" to play Uncharted or other top-tier games on a portable - most of the bigger fans will. I know I'll take as much Uncharted as I can get. It also really won't hurt any development on the full-fledged releases, as most of the studios let a different dev team handle the brunt of the work, while they simply maintain ultimate veto power and oversee the process just to make sure it all remains canon. And also, I'm sure, to make sure the game doesn't "suck" which could potentially harm the franchise.
GoW games were made by a different team on the PSP
Ratchet games were made by a different team on the PSP
Jak & Daxter games were made by a different team on the PSP
All of those games managed to be solid(some of them great) titles without needing the full attention of the original/main Devs. Uncharted is following this trend(I read so somewhere... Joystiq or psblog, maybe?) and I have no concerns about it whatsoever.

I honestly feel like the NGP is doomed out of the gate. I'm sure Sony will charge something like $399 for it and market penetration will be practically non-existent. I feel like even Nintendo is going to have quite the fight on its hands against the likes of iOS and Android. We're just about past the era where you can expect most people to have a dedicated gaming system as their portable device. The per-game pricing scheme is another weakness of both dedicated gaming handhelds. Quality iOS / Android games cost significantly less. It just feels like the Japanese gaming industry is completely disconnected from the US market these days. I expect the 3DS to succeed purely because of Nintendo's record in this territory, but I don't think Sony's record is going to help them.

Like wombat said, content is king... so if NGP launches with CoD and Monster Hunter it will sell millions by the end of the year (if it comes out this year in the US & Japan) and it will be sold out everywhere. Both of those games have huge followings and extremely dedicated fans, expect them to buy the NGP on day 1!

I travel a lot and I would love to be able to sync the NGP with a game that I am playing on the PS3 and take it on the road with me. Of course I would prefer to play it on the console and big screen, but I often have time in a hotel and don't have to worry about watching kids, etc. A "portable console" would be a great option that would allow me to get in some gaming while traveling.
Regarding the length of the podcast...I prefer the 90 minute version.

Why is it that people are treating the PSP like in hindsight it was a failure? This show kinda touched on it being a failure because it didn't sell as well as the DS and I've seen other editorials and what not saying the similar things like there are no great games on PSP.
I agree that the MUST PLAY titles are few and far between on the PSP, but can someone name some must play titles that are the DS? Both systems have good games, but neither IMO have titles that are going to make you want to make the jump to the portable if you have no interest in the platform. The only way they can get people with these consoles is putting established titles on handhelds that people really like. For Nintendo it's Pokemon, it's going to move portable consoles for them. The PSP uses console established games to move the PSP. Valkyria Chronicles, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid and that's just what I can think of off the top of my head.
I would hardly say that the PSP was a failure though, perhaps from now now on when they release other SKUs they should make more drastic changes, as far as appearance goes, so that people can feel the need to rebuy the console like people did with the DS. When was the last time anyone saw someone playing on this ugly hunk of junk...

Why is it that people are treating the PSP like in hindsight it was a failure?
Basically because it was such a fantastic piece of hardware and held such promise, but big games were so rare. It wasn't uncommon to go over 6 months without a release that looked even remotely interesting. To make matters worse, the best games on the PSP were basically watered down PS2 games.
I wanted to love it, but I ended up playing my DS 4-5 times a week and my PSP 4-5 times a year.

On the show length, really depends. With the motivation to move along in the discussion, this show didn't have to 30+ minutes of... nothing that many of the previous Cagcasts had. Then again, anytime discussions started getting interesting, it moved along too quickly. What I would LIKE to see is a happy medium. A longer show, but one with a purpose. Of course that takes more preparation before showtime and I hate to say it but it seems like Shipwreck is the only one willing to outline talking points, etc, before the show records. Nothing against the other two hosts but the optimum show requires a bit more work that could ultimately destroy the fun in creating the show.
As for the handheld wars, I really do think Wombat, Shipwreck, and CheapyD's tendacies to essentially ignore the platform (PSP) as a whole when you can't mention anything beyond Lumines for the platform. It also defeats the other preferred platform of CheapyDs... iPhone/Pad/Touch. Can you really name a "must have" experience on those platforms? Besides, beyond that, haven't we really proven over the past two generations that kind of thinking is no longer thought?
Put in another way, where was PS2's Mario 64? Where was Xbox 360's? A platform is no longer one game that must be present to warrant the purchase by itself, and hell, it hasn't even been that way for a long long time. If you can look at a platform as a whole and say, "I had a blast with that thing," then that's what it takes for the platform to be good. PSP's library, taken as a whole, is a phenominal library that requires only the time to explore it. Many of it's more popular genres and games are titles I prefer to take on the go, such as Hot Shots, DJ Max Portable, Field Commander, Dissidia, Wipeout, and FF Tactics. Are any one of these games titles that I could have missed out and been just fine with? Well, yes. But that's every game ever. But the library as a whole has presented me a lot more fun than my NintendoDS library. If NGP follows suit, I'll be fine with it. And with all the casual flood gamers that DS used to win the last war moving onto iPhone/Pad/Touch, then maybe, just maybe, we'll see a true handheld war. But considering Nintendo has already preloaded their opening volley with Nintendogs, I don't know if they're taking Sony or Apple seriously.
And speaking of 3DS, despite my preorders, I have a feeling the only thing Nintendo has prepared for launch of this system is the machines itself. Everything else, the software, the long term plans, even the frickin online store, seems like Nintendo is rushing around chanting "Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, HURRY UP, THEY'RE GONNA BE HERE ANY MINUTE!" If Nintendo keeps up this air of uncertainy and NGP does launch this year with a launch like PSP had, we might see a repeat of the beginnings of the last war.

Did you guys know that EA had a 99 cent free-for-all during the holidays for the IPhone? I got The Simpsons(2.99), Tetris(2.99), the Sims 3(6.99) & it's expansions(2 of them(4.99)(2.99), Battleship(.99), Battlefield: Bad Comapany 2(4.99), Heroes of Lore 3(removed from App Store), Madden 11(.99, but was more before Super Bowl), Lemonade Tycoon(.99) (loved it on the apple waay back in grade school), 2 different Monopolies(2.99x2), and NFS: Hot Pursuit(4.99). 13 bucks right there instead of the total if bought today which is... $39.88.
Thats my guess why EA's profits are the way they are at.

I definitely think the show felt a bit rushed. The 90 min shows just seem more relaxed and allow alot more time for (often funny) musings and meandering.
If the podcast runs it's course at 60min that's fine but don't hit it with a time constraint.
Great show anyway, I'll have to add Dead Space 2 to my list of games to play.

As for show length, longer is better, but don't push it. Do the same thing you've always done: talk about video games until you're finished. Forcing the conversation into a shorter or longer than natural length won't make anybody happy.

The only reason I would call the PSP a failure is because it became so easy to pirate. I bought one a few years ago because I loved the idea of being able to play final fantasy tactics on the go. The GOW titles were outstanding too. And Rock Band provided endless fun.
I like longer shows! An hour feels way too short.
