So I am thinking of having someone get me an IPod for Christmas. How is the Itunes software? How about the buying of songs? It is $1 right? Are there a lot of songs available?? Anyone have good/bad experiences?

The only experience I've had with it was when I dl'ed a couple of Devo songs using Pepsi codes. Nice software, save for the background processes that it runs on startup. :x

I have an iPod and I use iTunes to buy songs. iTunes has a pretty good selection overall, but not everything is available. It is $.99 per song and generally $9.99 per album, but it varies based on how long the album is. I reccmmend iTunes.

I personally hate iTunes. Also if you can choose get an iRiver MP3 player instead. And do you really pay for all your music?

Oh, please. Don't turn this into another ethical/unethical downloading thread.

you can get itunes right now, you don't need an ipod to use it, just go to apple.com and download it. I works just like any other media player. I like it and I use it to make mp3s out of my cds, but I still would rather use winamp.

iTunes is, without a doubt, the best pay-to-download-music service available. Not that that's saying much - its mostly because the rest of the industry is absolute crap (I'm looking at you, Napster 2.0) As was already said, songs are $0.99, and CDs are generally $9.99 (A couple of the new releases are up to $12.99, though they're the exception - so far. Also, if a CD has less than 10 songs, you generally just pay the 0.99*however many songs it is.)
As was also already said, you can easily download and install the iTunes software for free, even without an iPod - just go to itunes.com. Every week, there are 2 free songs that are available for download (generally they're second-rate songs, designed to market some unknown singer, but a few good ones get through.) So, you can give iTunes a try without spending a penny.
As was already mentioned, there's a background process that iTunes installs, but you can easily disable that UNLESS you have an iPod - the process is needed to connect the iPod to the PC. Overall, its very easy to use software with a clean interface (unlike, say, Napster), and doesn't feature blue cats constantly dancing on your screen (Napster) or constant pop-up ads trying to sell you a monthly fee service (Napster.) It also runs much faster and smoother than, oh, lets just say Napster, and the quality of the songs is far better than Napster. God, I hate you Napster...
Um, anyway, you may as well give it a try before you buy anything...
