Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic Battle aren't working for me. It says the file is corrupt - Maybe you can re-upload them?

I will look into it.

Try them again, they are working for me now.

Also, if you created any of these please let me know so I can give you credit. Organicow had it noted in the original first post, but we have overwritten that now.

The hi res image - when I open it into photoshop to print says: "JPEG marker segment length is too short. (The file may be truncated or incomplete)

Those are the only 2 images I have a problem with, and they won't open in any other program for me.

Well I found out that my scanner is acting up and overlays the whole image with little red dots. I can try on my other scanner but it won't be as good of quality (this is for Megaman Battle Network 3 and F-Zero: Maximum Velocity.

I decided to make a sharper side GBA logo. You can resize it as necessary to use and I don't need any credit if you use it.

I am reuploading them. There was a hiccup in the file transfer and they did in fact get corrupted.

Just to give you a head's up, the GameBoy Advance logo on the spine of the following games is too high up and got cut off:

Advance Wars2
Astro Boy Omega Factor
Castlevania-aos
Castlevania-cotm
Castlevania-hod
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Fire Emblem
Lunar Legend
Shining Soul 2
Tactics Ogre

The following covers that I downloaded and looked at are fine, and don't need to be fixed:

Advance Guardian Heroes
Advance Wars
Breath Of Fire 2
Castlevania
Double Dragon Advance
Golden Sun
Golden Sun 2
Ice Climber
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts - alt1
Kingdom Hearts - alt2
Kingdom Hearts - alt3
Kingdom Hearts - alt4
Legend Of Zelda
Lufia
Mario & Luigi - Superstar Saga
Metroid
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Zero Mission
Ninja Five-O
River City Ransom EX
Shining Soul
Sword Of Mana
Warioland 4
Yoshi's Island
Zelda 2 - The Adventure Of Link

Alright. We need to decide on a spine logo so I can make sure all of the covers have the same logo from here on out.

Logo 1 (the one I currently use):

Logo 2 (Provided by Mij and tweaked to fit into place)

Alright I've got my FF1&2 done and a new Zelda LTTP with thumbs. Where do you want them?

These were done with the GBA logo Snowcone provided earlier. In all actuality the new logo does look better. We do need to decide on a consistent set of guidelines (imagesizeand logos). I guess I vote for the new one even though I would have to redo these two. Not a huge deal since I have the PSD but I want to work on New ones!:P:D

Also I put together a list of the games I have and can do. What does anyone want next?

Castlevania AOS -Already Done
Castlevania COTM -Already Done
Contra Advanced
FF Tactics Adv - Already Done
FF1&2 - Already Done
Final Fight One - Front messed up but may be usable
GT Advanced
Mario Kart - Already Done
Metroid Fusion - Already Done
Sonic Advanced - Already Done
Spyro Season of Flame
Spyro Season of Ice
Super Mario Advanced 1
Super Mario Advanced 2
Super Mario Advanced 3 - Already Done
Super Mario Advanced 4 - Already Done
Super Mario Classic
Tetris Worlds
Tom & Jerry The Magic Ring
Tony Hawk 2
Wario Ware - Already Done
Zelda LTTP - Already Done

Snowcone...I think the one you are using works really well. When I printed out each of your covers they all lined up nicely on the shelf. I also like how the top portion has some white so it looks uniform. As for the clarity...maybe it could be a little sharper but the ones I printed already look good enough to display so I wouldn't say it is a necessity.

I setup a temporary page for you guys to upload files to my site.
http://www.snackbar-games.com/uploadcovers.php

Only images smaller than 7MB may be uploaded. I will handle the creation of the thumbnails. I will also be deleting these after I get them moved to the proper location. This page will only be up when someone needs to upload covers so make sure you contact me before attempting to upload.

Just let me know. Or I can e-mail them toyou. Whatever.:D

Oh and after further review i changed my mind and like the Snowcone GBA logo better. Just seems bolder and stands out more. The other is nice but I wish the text was bigger.
-G

Snowcone
12-29-2004, 11:08 AM
The text is clearer on the 2nd one but with resizing it to fit it lost some of its sharpness. I think the first one works fine and since it is bolder and so small after being printed anyway I think it is good. I will fix the logo for the covers that were mentioned above and reupload them.

Alright I think I loaded the Zelda and FF1 &2. After I did it it said that I "can only upload images". They both were .jpgs Can you make sure you got them? Let me know what you think of the quality of work to see if they're acceptable. I want these to be of the best quality for everyone and if there's something you think I could do better let me know. Thanks for hosting this project. If they're good enough you can just give credit to simplygriff and maybe put a link to my under construction site www.simplygriff.com

Nice. Got them online too. Your FF: Dawn of Souls cover was more of a pure white than the other one and while I typically center the logo in the spine yours looked cleaner overall. Keep them coming guys.

On a side note, I have a contact at Nintendo who I inquired with about acquiring boxart directly from Nintendo. I fired off an email and they aren't going to be able to provide us with anything. Oh well. We just need to find more people with GBA games and access to a scanner.

Looks good. I see what you mean about the white of the background especially up against the Tactics box. I may adjust the levels some to brighten that up and resend it.

Have you been leaving the nintendo logo like the originals and centering the Game logo? I just took out a chunk of blank space and lined everything up. Granted that may not work on some covers, Final Fight I know cause it has a round gradient behind the logo.

I play it by ear with each cover. Sometimes you have to chop off developer logos in order to center the artwork or logo and other times you don't. Just do it however you think looks best.

I think the cover is bright enough as I lightened it up already.

Oh cool. Thanks. I guess I'll just start with whatever is in the rest of my collection unless someone wants a specific one from my earlier list.

Do you know of a faster way to scan images? In PS I go file>import> EpsonTwain it works fine but always prescans and closes after every scan. Should I just try to use the Scanner independent of PS? Any suggestions?

Snowcone
12-29-2004, 01:06 PM
That is how I do it in PS, but it doesn't close PS in between scans.

simplygriff
12-29-2004, 01:15 PM
It doesn't close PS but it closes the scanning utility. I've used a scanner before a long long time ago where if you were doing a bunch of scanning you could have an area selected and all your settings set up and just put your item in the area and hit scan. This was forever ago on an old work PC without PS. Any ideas?

Hey guys -
I'm really glad you guys (esp. snowcone) have really run with this! I don't really have the time these days to fuss with this, so I hereby pass the OP torch to Snowcone.

Snowcone - I would suggest that we either kill this thread and have you start a new one (so you can update the running tally in the OP), or have you put these on a webpage somewhere and just keep this thread alive as a place to discuss the covers and set up scan trades, etc. Or, we can keep this thread like it is, and you can just PM me new BBcode whenever you want and I'll post it in the OP.
Whaddya think??

PS - I'm really glad you guys have come up with a better res scan of the GBA logo; mine looked like ass.

Cool tip for unstraight scans in case you don't know.

Use the ruler tool to draw a line across a line you know should be straight like an edge or logo or something. GO Image> Rotate Canvas> Arbitrary>

It will automatically insert the value you need to rotate it. Press OK and you're done. Do this first thing though because it rotates the whole canvas and can cut things off if you're not careful.

First of all, I think this is an awesome idea.

7 of my 8 games have already had covers created. The only one that hasn't is Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs. I have the original cardboard box and a scanner, but I don't have photoshop or the skills to actually make the cover. If I scan the box, could I talk someone into trying to make the cover for me (and the other 6 people who bought the game)?

EDIT: Also, someone said a few posts above that the Tony Hawk one was done and uploaded, but I don't see it on the main page for this project. Are there more covers available than show up on the main page?

OK, I just uploaded the Spyro Attack of the Rhynocs scans to the http://www.snackbar-games.com/uploadcovers.php site.

Hopefully these are good enough for one of you to make a cover.

Griff uploaded them to Snowcone's site. Snowcone still needs to add the cover to his main page, though.

I'm going to re-upload Pokemon Pinball - I noticed the damage to the box in the top left corner of the back side; but I can fix that in photoshop since it's only one solid color where it's creased.

The scans for Spyro look blurry to me - any way you could get them clearer?

EDIT: Looking at the Pokemon Pinball I made, I'm just going to re-do it to make it look better.

Yeah, they aren't as good as some of the ones that I've seen, but it's at 400dpi, and the JPGs are bigger than what they will be when they're all done, so maybe they'll look better? I dunno, my HP PSC1350 is pretty good (photos look like originals when scanned), but I left all the settings on default except making it 400 dpi. I'm not sure how to make it better

I can do all the Spyro games (Attack of Rhynocs, Season of Ice, Season of Fire) from my own scans if the others are too blurry. My wife loves that purple dragon so we have all the games. Except the newest Crash crossover thing. :P ???

If you're going to enlist help of other forums(which is great) I think we need to have some kind of work in progress list, thread or something. Perhaps on the ssnackbar-games page. What do you guys think? I just don't want people wasting time doing stuff twice. And honestly I want to do all the ones I can cause this is fun for me.

My List (again):
Castlevania AOS -Already Done
Castlevania COTM -Already Done
Contra Advanced - Done
FF Tactics Adv - Already Done
FF1&2 - Already Done
Final Fight One - Front of mine messed up

Well, I would rescan them, but I'm seriously walking out the door to go on a week-long trip, and anyway I don't know if scanning them a second time will make it better than I got it before, so hopefully someone else can get a copy of the Attack of the Rhynocs box and can scan it better than I can.

Yeah, I figured someone else could try. The problem with GBA boxart is that sometimes it just isn't that clear or the scanner picks up wierd gradient patterns in the color. We will see if someone can come up with boxart for it. If not, I will publish the previously created one.

Nah, they both had price stickers (among other stickers) on the front of the box, and when removed, left residue, or removed some of the case. Total lost cause.

It's hard to tell since my camera sucks but they turned out pretty nice, even though I printed them all at home.

Here's a tip to make them fit on one page when you print them. MS Paint works fine if you don't have a francy graphic editor. Normally, the margins are too big, even if you set them to minimum. The trick is to set the page setup to landscape and then set the paper size to Legal (slightly longer pages). Then just align the picture to the left (uncheck "center horizontally" if you're using MS Paint). The picture will still fit on the normal sized paper you're using, it's just an easy way to trick the printer into going that close to the edge.

Hmm... sounds like your printer is too smart for your own good. Looks like you'll have to really use Legal-sized paper. Even if you don't use high quality paper the covers still look pretty good once they're under the case's plastic layer.

Hey Snowcone, I noticed on the PA forum you guys were kicking around the idea of split DS/GBA covers. I didn't feel like signing up for the PA forums but I just wanted to point out there'd be no room for the manuals for both games if they shared the same case. Couple that with the difficulty of doing the back covers and the whole thing sounds like a no-go to me. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I have my box still from Shining Force. I knew how quickly these things get messed up, so I unfolded it and have kept it stored in my closet. I don't have a scanner, but I could send it off to someone.

May I also make a suggestion? Could a FAQ on printing be put on the main page? So people have a quick reference page for Q's about paper, what programs to use, and page setup could look to first. I'd love to get started on this project for my games, but I don't have photoshop or high grade paper.

I'm running a HP Deskjet 841C as my printer. So, I'm wondering about the quality of my print-outs (especially without Photoshop).

I believe they will get scaled down to fit the media if your paper is not long enough.

What paper would be optimal for this? It's been said that you need paper thats longer than 8.5 x 11, but do they make photo/glossy paper longer than 8.5 x 11? Should you even use photo/glossy paper?

(I would link to an optimal paper on the frontpage Snowcone, or put it in the printing FAQ)

Hey there, been following this great thread and have proceeded to print out and prepare several DS boxes. Thanks for everybodys hard work!

Regarding printing out on 8 1/2 x 11", this is how I did it:

I'm using your typical HP photo paper, standard size. Using Photoshop, you can ALMOST get the entire image on there. However, the printer (using a standard HP inkjet, a Deskjet 895) would hiccup near the end and cut off a portion. I remedied this by using a bit of creative engineering:

I taped a piece of paper on the back of the photo paper to lengthen the 8 1/2 x 11" to legal size. Now my printer has something to grab to feed the photo paper all the way through. Now I can print all of the image. The only shortfall is I get an occasional streak where the printer starts to grab the filler paper, resulting in an okay and passable print, but noticable nontheless.

Of the 10 cases I made I have two that I may want to revist later, and try again. Still, they look great.

Hope that helps!

Oh, and I would really like a cover for Car Battler Joe and Phantasy Star Collection. I have both boxes, but I have no access to a scanner!

Keep up the great work!

I would like to further suggest that your particular style of printer will definitely have an impact on how these things print. For example, many photo printers (such as my R300) allow you to "print to edge" or do "borderless prints." If your printer has these options, play around with them in your preferences menu; that's how I've been doing it.

And yes, Photoshop/Gimp is definitely the best way to go!

First, let me say that I really like these forums, and kudos to all of you and your hard work! I'll try to scan some of my game boxes sometime soon to help out.

Because I don't have Photoshop on my computer, I decided to use the free picture program IrfanView (www.irfanview.com). I managed to print the cover to Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on one 8.5" x 11" page, no problem. However, the cover was a tad small compared to Kin Korn Karn's picture of the same cover. I'll detail the settings I used in a moment, but essentially, the cover was pretty much the right hight, meeting the top and bottom edge of the plastic case cover. The left and right sides seemed short, as they didn't meet the edge of the two tab slots on the edge of the case. I used a paper cutting tool of my wife's to make sure I trimmed everything down to the bare edge, so I'm sure I didn't cut more paper than I had to.

I compared the actual cover details in a zoomed picture on my monitor with the printed page, and everything looks proper and the correct ratios. Perhaps one of you can check my settings in IrfanView and see if we can find a happy medium, eh? :D

Here are the steps I used to print out my cover on one sheet:

1) Download IrfanView from IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com). It's a very small download, and is a neat little program in its own right. Install the program and feel free to leave the file associations blank during the installation.

2) After installing the IrfanView, start the program and open up your picture from the File menu. Click on File again, then click on Print.

3) I left the setting for Print Size at "Original Size" ("Best Fit To Page" ended up giving me a slightly smaller print), but I made sure to select Landscape for the paper orientation. Click on Printer Setup, check to see that Landscape is also selected in the following popup window (it should be automatic), and then check to see if the paper size is correct (8.5" x 11").

4) Click on Properties if you want to change the print quality, otherwise, click on OK. After that, click on Print.

I still got good results, so I guess I can't complain. Still, I want the maximum area covered inside the case if possible. The only other detail I can think of is that the Print popup said "Resulting image size on paper: 26.5 x 11.6cm; 10.4 x 4.6 inches". Does that seem like the proper size for the resulting printout? Did everyone's cover reach most of the way around their cases?

Thanks in advance for everyone's help. Keep up the good work!

3) I left the setting for Print Size at "Original Size" ("Best Fit To Page" ended up giving me a slightly smaller print),

I think that is your problem, perhaps. I tried that setting (Photoshop, but I'm sure it produces the same result no matter the program) and it fit nicely on the standard sheet, but it was indeed just a touch smaller than the desired size.

IMO, print limitations are a product of the printer and/or paper, and not so much the program you are using to print from. It's different for everybody, but I got past my limitations only by tricking my printer into thinking it had legal sized photopaper. Perhaps you may want to give that a shot?

NeoGutsman
01-19-2005, 01:19 PM
I think you're right. I thought IrfanView would be a good solution, but yeah, there are issues with scaling as with all the other attempts with 8.5" x 11" paper listed in this topic thread.

I'm going to grab some legal paper from work today and see if the picture prints slightly larger. Thanks for the insight!

Why limit this just to Gameboy Advance cartridges?

http://img161.exs.cx/img161/1452/warioquadrilogyinside1ff.gif

Took less than five minutes with an exacto type knife once I decided on how to go about it. What's also cool is that by just taking out the bottom part of the GBA slot you're able to store Boktai and Boktai 2: Solar Boy Django almost perfectly.

Even with the knife, I was able to do this without damaging the slip cover/outside of the case at all beyond a rough edge on the back here or there that seems unavoidable at the moment. I'm going to try to streamline the process as time goes on to get a neater cut overall so that the cartridge fits in more snugly.

If there's interest I'll do scans of each phase of cutting it with instructions.

So now Pokemon Pinball, Gator Pinball, and Perfect Dark are the only major games left out of this?

So how exactly did you get it to fit now? Just cut out the bottom of the GBA slot?

Neo Rasa
01-23-2005, 03:02 AM
You have to remove the bottom of the GBA slot, and then take out the upper clips fo the DS cartridge slot as well as the raised "containment area."

You remove a little less than half of it and the GB/GBC cartridge will fit in just fine. Except you also have to either shave off the raised area in the middle of the DS cartridge containment area or alternately (like I did) you can basically cut a rectangular whole in the DS case after clearing out the clips.

You can not bother with those extra steps, but then the cartridge will be raised up towards the center of the DS case and won't really fit as well.

This way gravity holds the cartridge in place pretty much perfectly on the raised areas (the large raised area on the left and the embossment in the center) and the GBA slot slides keep it secure.

Thats a nice GB Color logo Neo Rasa. Did you make that yourself?

What I did was take the GBA spine logo some awesome person on I think Snackbar-Games contributed, got rid of the "ADANCE," then just typed out "COLOR" and sized it as best I could. If you look online you can get a Gamecube font that's basically the GBA logo font when capitalized.

If you go to http://www.snackbar-games.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8045 I started a thread about this and someone made a GBC logo that's in color. The word color on it is scanned off of an actual GBC and then brightened.

I was definitely going to use that on anything I printed but it's kind of hard to decide. :D

Hi there. I started printing out these cases and they look very nice. Except...

I use the "taping-two-piece-of-paper-together" trick, and I think I've got it down to a science. Only problem is that the right edge of the cover suffers from degradation (namely an odd white line and some "slippage")....

Anyone else encountering this problem or a similar one?

Do not print it from IE. IE ignores dpi and will print it at a retarded size. Use Photoshop, Gimp, or even MS Photo Editor and people have had varying results with different types of paper. I suggest you check out the Printing Guide here (http://www.snackbar-games.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8020) as well as a few of the other printing threads here (http://www.snackbar-games.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7988) and here (http://www.snackbar-games.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7944).

I just uploaded Bubble Bobble.

Also, I have a new idea - I'm gonna try to get on it this week. Remember those old GB/GBC small clear cart cases? They only came with the original GB games before the big N got cheap and started leaving them out. Well, now they are available online at the Nintendo store (i was ordering yet another round of GBA/DS cases when I saw them), so I ordered 10 of them. I'm gonna try to make 'covers' for these cases with a format similar to a CD jewel case - with a front cover and then a 'tray' card for the back/spine.

Y'see, i really don't want to go to all the trouble of cutting down those slots in the DS cases, and also - I really have fond memories of those pocket-sized cases. Hell, it might look like shit, but i just gotta try...only problems i see are: 1)no room for the manual (i don't mind that one), and also 2) finding box scans for these might be a bit harder - but at lease there won't be a s much detail to worry about.

I'll try to post a couple first-attempts at this in the next day or two, and see how they work...

Damn Boss!! Cranking them out!

I still just have my lowly Tom and Jerry and the Magic Ring to do. Not too high on my priority list since I need about 5 more cases to finish my collection anyway.

Thank Slash000, he uploaded both sets of those yesterday. I have been slammed all day at work for almost 10 days now so I haven't had a chance to create any.

Hey, do you think we could get a new scan of Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance? It seems to be a pretty blurry scan (no offense to the source of the original scan, but I'm just picky about these things.)

Let me know.

Yeah, that was from my very first set of covers, way back in the beginning. I had lost my C:HOD box, so I had to use crappy pics from the www.cdcovers.cc site. Yeah, if anyone out there wants to scan and email me or Snowcone with the files, we could certainly do up a replacement!

My box is in fairly decent condition, so if no ones sent you one by tomorrow night, i will.

Any other requests? We are up to 204 covers and I know Slash000 loves to do them.

Do you know how many GBA games there are? I'm sure that you all have made covers for atleast half of them.

From what I can tell there are about 450 and we have several duplicates with alternate covers so we are just under halfway. We are also covering GB and GBC games now.
I might have missed this earlier in the thread... but what case fits a GB cart?

I re-did Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, Ultimate Muscle, and Samurai Jack, as I was not happy with the quality. These are from my personal scans, how do you want me to send them?

EDIT: NVm, searched around on Snackbar and found the uploader, now uploading the re-done HOD, Samurai Jack, and Ultimate Muscle.

Good...that C:HOD was really annoying me - I had lost my box, and used crappy internet files for that one...

The error message should indicate the problem. I capped the images at 7MB each and that is probably the source of your problem. Save these with a quality of 10 in PS and they should be fine. I uploaded the C:HOD one, but not the Samurai Jack yet.

Well, if we're posting requests, I just have 2, Ultimate Brain & Card Games. Unfortunately, we threw the box away for Card Games, and bought Brain Games used, so I can't scan them myself...

Just came across this thread and checked out some of the covers. I would just like to say you guys are doing a great job, and I'm really anxious to buy some cases from Nintendo to put my GBA games in. Thanks for your time and effort.

Glad we could help. I thought it was impressive when we had 50 covers but now that we are at almost 350 I don't even know what to say anymore.

I am sure someone has the covers or can build a cover for them.

I got it covered. I found front/back for Brain games, but only a front for Card games. So I created it from scratch. Here are some thumbnails of the two I just uploaded:

What kind of paper are you guys using to print the covers?

bone_matrix
02-18-2005, 11:11 AM
I just pick the best printing I can do and then print on regular printer paper. I have to do a bit of cutting, but I'm pretty sure its just my computer being stupid.

Anyway, I have a request, if anyone could be so kind. Dragonball Z: The Legacy of Goku. I see that the second one is up, but not the first one. If someone needs a scan, I can do it, but it would take a while to set up my scanner and whatnot, just let me know.

And keep up the work guys. This is great stuff. You helped me go from a baggy full of games, to a very neat looking shelf. Keep it up.

GB & GBC games will fit if you are willing to do a little case modification with an xacto knife. There is a thread about it on the snackbar forums.
