Well I haven't done it yet, but here's how I understand it.

Picture this as a diagram as the plastic that holds the GBA game in place.
Pictured here: |__|

You want to cut out the bottom (the part that sticks out), highlighted in red: |__|

Then you put the GBC cart in upside down, so that the 2 plastic sides hold it in place.

$200 will get you close to 250 cases.

not really, 80 cents for a case and $1 to print out each cover x 60 gba games and 60 gb/gbc games....my printer hasnt worked in ages and even if i did i doubt it would be cheaper to print them at home rather than taking them to a print shop...what i need to do is find a place that will do like 60 pages for 20-30 bucks...

are there places online that print PDF's?

Snowcone
02-21-2005, 06:11 PM
I see. Yeah, that could get kind of expensive, but 120 of these games in cases would look mighty pimp.

I also want to know. I'm hoping a way to work without buying 8"x14" paper. The prints are 10.8X inches and legal paper is 11".

There's a thread about it in the Snackbar forums. Basically, there are three ways, IIRC.

1) Tape a short piece of paper to the back of regular paper, thereby 'making' it 8x14 inches. When you print, your printer will print all the way to the edge of the front page, and hopefully won't print anything on the added-on piece. Sometimes the added thickness of the taped on page smears the ink, though, so be careful.

2) Tell your printer there's legal size paper in the tray, then print on regular letter paper. This works better if your printer can print very small margins. It gives some printers problems, though.

3) Use a border-less printing printer.

That's all I know off-hand. Otherwise you could just buy the legal paper, print these at Kinkos, or print on two pages and tape them together after printing.

As for the requests made in this thread, I can probably take care of them. I keep up with the Snackbar GBA Case forum more frequently, though, so requests made in there are usually taken care of more rapidly.

Anyway, good luck printing.

I finished X2: Wolverine's Revenge just now, so expect to see it posted at SnackBar within a day or so.

Side Note: Anyone have any of the famicom mini games? I just got this today and the packaging is super sweet. The box is so small but it looks awesome. It's clear plastic with a smaller box inside displayed which has the game inside it. Really cool. Oh and by the way KID ICARUS ROCKS!

KirbyKollector on Snackbar has already posted a bunch of Famicom Mini covers, unfortunately Kid Icarus is not one of them.

I posted the Gameboy1 version of Kid Icarus not too long ago, though..

However, it looks like it would be quite easy to mod a NES/GB Kid Icarus cover to look like one of the already-posted Fam. Mini covers. I'll give a shot.

Unless you or anyone else can provide a scan of the box, we're only left with the option of piecing it together with what we have. That is, not much.

I might be able to make another alt cover, though, but making it any more resolute is an impossibility without someone sending in scans of the box.

Also, to the one attempting to make Famicom Mini covers:

Use http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n08/fmk/index.html to get the materials for the cover. This is where I get all the Japanese text and spine text. I know, I totally forgot about the Famicom Mini project, and I may pick it back up soon. I'm just saying that the Kid Icarus one there now would look too different amongst other Famicom Minis.

Well, considering I only bought 20 cases, and the fact that I love all my GB -> GBA games equally, I'm fine with just looking in M's for all the portable Metroids, and Metal Gear Solid would've either gone in the middle with its fellow M's or off to the side by itself. I kinda wanted all the metroids next to each other.

I likes me Metal Gear Solids:

I can't print and send them to you, but if you tell me which 2 covers they are, it's very likely that they were saved at the wrong DPI, and thus are printing the wrong size. Let me know which covers they are and I can fix the DPI, allowing them to print the right size.

Some people submitted covers at 350 dpi instead of 300, which would explain the ~1'' discrepancy.

Ok first off, A HUGE THANK YOU and mad props to the OP, Snowcone, and everyone else who has contributed to this idea.

Now that I finally got some cases and paper, I've been putting all my GBA games in cases and I was a bit miffed when I found that the cases don't close too well with a manual jammed in there.

BUT!

I found an INSANELY easy way to trim the case to fit the manuals! I have a large nail clipper (with a straight edge, not the curved ones), and I went across the plastic with it two times and now I have a perfectly trimmed case that fits any size manual (including the beastly WarioWare, FF 1 & 2, and Advance Wars 2 manuals!).

So I hope that helps you all out.

Also, I tweaked a few of the NES classic case printouts from Snowcones site to include classic sprites on the spine of the case. I put a triforce on Zelda, the ship from Xevious on Xevious' case, Bomberman on the side of his game, and I fixed the size of Samus on the Metroid case. I also fixed the colors so they are SOLID black and look great when printed out. I'd be more than happy to upload them, if someone could kindly tell me where and HOW to do so.

Keep up the good work lads!

Most of us have been using pocket knives or exacto knives, but nail clippers are an excellent idea. I shall try that on my next batch of cases.

We're always adding alt covers to the collection, so it'd be fine to add your modded covers to the collection. I'm on a Pocket PC right now so I don't have the upload link, but i can post it later if someone else doesn't do it first.

If you all like them, I can work on finishing out the set (I don't have the other six games myself, but I plan to get them eventually so it couldn't hurt to have the inserts ready beforehand ;) ).

Thanks for the props y'all! I'm a pretty avid Nintendo collector and I think there's only a few dozen or so Nintendo developed games (for ALL of their consoles) that I don't own yet. Oh and yeah I wish I didn't have the PC game sticking out like a sore thumb, but Pac Man Vs is a MUST OWN game IMO. I also only have 2-3 GH games for PS1, but I plan to replace those with non-GH versions eventually.

As for the Blue tin next to RE4, its the Limited Edition of Akira that came out a few years ago. I decided to throw them next to each other cuz they're the same type of case.

I may move the GBA case trimming pics to another gallery to make room in my personal gallery for more of my collection. I'll keep y'all posted!

This is likely caused by the DPI being accidentally set at something other than 300 dpi. Even some of SnowCone's were accidentally set at the wrong DPI. You should contact him about those covers so he can correct them.

if you want to do it yourself, just open the files in an Image editor, and edit the properties of the image telling it to set it at 300 DPI. Then it should print correctly.

I'm not 100% sure what size the Boktai Cart is, but if we can fit GB and GBC carts in these cases by cutting them, I don't see why we can't fit Boktai in by the same method.

The DS cases are a different size than the ones you order from Nintendo.com? I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, explain in more detail and maybe we can help.. It could be the cover itself, so, tell us which one, too.

Oh, and I just finished Tony Hawk Underground...

I put a good amount of effort into this one to make it look authentic. I used THUG2 as a basis for its design. I like how it turned out and it should look pretty good next to THUG2 if you have both.

Unless you have a borderless printer, you might want to try using Legal Size paper, 8.5'' by 14''. You can buy this stuff at any office type store, and it's really cheap. Few bucks for >100 pages.

It should say in the manual or on the spec sheet or something.

If not, you should be able to tell somewhere in its config.

But to be honest, it's highly improbably that you have a borderless printer.
I'd recommend either 'tricking' your printer into doing Legal Paper by taping 2 pieces of legal together to make it 14'' long, or just buying regular legal paper. I had to buy legal paper because taping the pages together smeared my ink.

Ok so I have an offer for one of the founders of this great idea.....I was contemplating making all these cool cases for my old GB GBA games but I have thought now that I only collect complete older GB GBA games so they have their OG cardboard boxes as it is. I know this would be 10x cooler and be able to fit on a shelf but I'm not sure how my printer will handle the color printouts. I have now figured that there is only 1 game in dire need of a cool case. And that is the Metroid demo that came with the DS. So I would like to offer up paypal to any of the reliable founders of this great project to make me just one box with the insert for Metroid demo. I know it's only 1 box and 1 request but if any of you are willing to hook me up send me a PM and a price for the box/printout/shipping/work. Thanx

Do we really have so many covers that there are no more left to do?

Eh.. I was browsing a list of GBA games recently.. there's still a significant amount to do..

I'm actually going to start tackling the list soon. I've been busy with a lot of things lately, and AussieBen pretty much completely his huge collection of boxes. I finished off every cover at gameexpress with my last big upload before I did requests, although I'd like to rework a number of them.

But to be honest, most of the good GBA games that people actually own have already been covered and uploaded, and therefor the ones we have left to do are kind of.. not a huge priority. Lower priority, I'd say, than some of the important GB and GBC games.

Do you know if the EU cases are bigger (fatter) than the US ones? This might be a solution to the Pokemon Pinball GBC problem.

evilmax17
04-07-2005, 04:45 PM
Pokemon Pinball GBC has rumble built in, so the cart is really big (and fat). It's almost exactly as wide as a US DS case, so it doesn't fit into the case (no matter how you mod it). A wider case might be able to hold it though.

http://img195.echo.cx/img195/9391/goldeneyesmall0vl.th.jpg (http://img195.echo.cx/my.php?image=goldeneyesmall0vl.jpg)

It took forever to manipulate box scans of the Goldeneye cover to format them vertically, unlike the horizontal-based N64 boxes.

You're probably wondering where I got the case. Well, I don't know. I was given these several years ago as a birthday gift, and I only have 8 of them. So my 8 most precious N64 games are getting this treatment, unless someone knows of anywhere these can be found.

Anyway, I like it.

If this starts, we should talk to SnowCone. He's got a ton of space on his servers for stuff like this, apparently.

Anyway, I might order some of those universal cases, and re-size the covers I've done to see how they look. We'll see.

I like it. This takes forever.. but it's worth it..

I also decided to orient the N64 logo on the spine vertically, unlike the goldeneye version. I already fixed it on that one, along with adding the logo on the front properly.

JKAM - if you tell me the dimensions of the case that you have, of the front/back and spine, in inches, I can alter the Goldeneye and Zelda covers to those dimensions so you can try it yourself.

These are the ones I currently own. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004YV84/snackbargames-20/002-9052291-4767214)
However, as JKAM pointed out, there is a website where you can buy these (http://www.mediashelving.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/50-754.jpg) in mass quantities:

http://www.mediashelving.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/50-754.jpg

If we are to do a full-fledged project, we'll need to find a source with many cases on hand, like mediashelving.com. Amazon and Ebay only have about 20 of the type I own total between them, so mediashelving would be ideal. However, it seems mediashelving only sells these in packs of 100 for $40..

Anyway, yes, we'd have to choose a case type before going full force on anything like this. Mediashelving's cases seem to be the best bet so far, unless we can find another kind for less than $40 100 packs.

Also, I'm getting these covers on there by using a lot of glue stick and then laminating them onto the covers, so that they don't get scratched/smeared. However, the Mediashelving covers actually come with sleeves like DVD cases, which would be ever more perfect.

That's an excellent idea! I hadn't thought of it since the red bars on the original N64 boxes had only been on the back and front, but since this cover extends all the way around, that's a good way to keep the covers uniform in style and a good place to put the N64 logo.

That Zelda one looks awesome. Great job on it. Approx. how long did it take you?

Not sure. A long time, though. What took forever was not only scanning the box, but once I'd done that, taking the scan apart and resizing and reconfiguring it to fit a logical vertical format. The biggest challenge is of course the back cover, with all of its text and images. I basically had to retype all the text, as a result.

The Zelda cover did, of course, take far less time than the Goldeneye cover because the Goldeneye cover has a complex image for its background in the front and back. I ended up scrapping the background image altogether for the back, and making my own. The Zelda cover was a matter of coloring the background gold, and resizing the Zelda logo to fit appropriately, and of course retyping and fitting the text.

Not really sure on how long it took in minutes though. But it takes much less time now that I have the redbar icons and such sorted out to be copy/pasted.

JKAM - if you tell me the dimensions of the case that you have, of the front/back and spine, in inches, I can alter the Goldeneye and Zelda covers to those dimensions so you can try it yourself.

Well I tried resizing your Goldeneye one to fit my case and the height is 6.75 inches. I tried the width at 11.75 inches but it was just a bit too big so I have to try a few more to get it right. The height is a little bit shorter because I am going by where the DVD like plastic sleeve begins and starts as opposed to the entire length of the case. It isn't that much of a difference. The only other thing is the spine measures about 1.2 inches so the spine graphic will have to be a little bit wider. When I printed this out it still looked good with the resized dimensions.

Unfortunately I don't have any boxes otherwise I would try to start up a template.

As for the ones you have done...they look great....but do you really need to swap the graphics to be horizontal? Meaning why not just leave the graphics vertical like the original box? I guess I am just more worried about the spine sitting on the shelf rather than the front artwork.

Also the universal cases hold SNES games with the dust covers so those could be done in addition to N64 games if anyone is intrested in that.

Backlash
05-09-2005, 12:36 PM
I would love to have the ones for SNES as well.

Also, I kind of agree about the horizontal vs vertical graphics. The vertical ones look amazing, but it seems like it would take too many man-hours to really be able to create a lot of them. Plus there's something to be said for having the original box art more exactly as it was (more or less, due to some resizing if necessary).

I'm not understanding this question.

The original N64 boxes are oriented horizontally. The cases I own are oriented vertically, like DVD cases or the GBA/DS cases. If I didn't alter the cover art to make them vertical, I'd have to use the boxes' original horizontal orientation, which means that standing upright (like DVD or GBA cases), the logos and text and everything would be sideways.. Leme post a pic when I get home.

But it is true that reconfiguring these things is time consuming. And I'm with snowcone in not wanting to pay $40 for 100 cases for my mere 20 N64 games.

too bad I only have just a few of these cases I've already covered...

I just mean why not keep them the same as the original N64 boxes (horizontal)? Basically so you don't have to do the extra work. I was just saying for myself the spine would be more important than the front cover so I could see them when they are lined up on my shelf. The ones you did definitely look sweet though.

As for the cases maybe one of you could buy the 100 and then split them up between you if enough people are intrested.

Backlash

Yes, to expand on what jkam said, the spine graphics would be just like you have them, so when the games are all on the shelf it looks normal. When you pulled the game off the shelf the graphics would be sideways/horizontal, but that doesn't really matter because you can just rotate the case in your hand if you want to examine the insert (or if it's just sitting on the floor or whatever). Basically, you won't see that the inserts are oriented "the wrong way" while the boxes are on the shelf, right?

As for orientation, I really don't care either way, as long as we come up with a concensus. I made this graphic to demonstrate the differences between a regular DVD cased game, the horizontally-oriented case, and the vertically-oriented case:

http://img87.echo.cx/img87/5359/img12wj.jpg
(the images are rendered proportionally to one another, so that you can see that these N64 cases are roughly the same height and depth of a DVD case, although about 2x as thick)

another comparison:
http://img87.echo.cx/img87/9144/sizeds0my.jpg

This would be how it would look if it were only pieced together from scans directly, as you can see by the spine. We could use a new N64 logo for the spine, a vertical one, to just paste over the sideways one, if we wanted (like the vertical ones). But like I said, either way is cool with me.

Just my 2 cents:
I would prefer to maintain the orientation of the original N64 boxes - not just because it would be easier, but also as a bit of a tribute to the original design.
I love the idea of extending the red bar through the spine, and also the vertical N63 symbol.

As for the cases - I would be more than willing to go in on some boxes with you guys - I could use around 20 total (SNES & N64). Also, I would be more than happy to photoshop some of these things if someone gets me boxart...I'd hate for slash to have to do them all by himself!

Hmm I don't see your pics slash. I'd be willing to do some scans, but I probably have the same problem everyone else has - no boxes. I actually did save them all for years, but I threw them away before I moved to TX :(

That's weird, maybe ImageShack is having trouble. You should be able to see them now, if not, i'll put them on photobucket.

I have most of my original boxes, and I intendo to scan them all for this project. I have about 8 boxes. I think between us and anyone else who wants to contribute we could hit the main ones, and I (and whoever else) could put together ones we're missing from internet artwork (I did this a great deal for the GBA case project). But that is of course last resort.

Ok, I think we should go with horizontal orientation of the original boxes to make this project more feasible, but to have the red bar extend through the spine along with a vertical N64 logo. We did that sorta thing for the GBA project and it worked out well.

I guess the next step would be to ask SnowCone for some server space for this, then we'll have an official place to start submitting these.

It's hard to say what's wrong without more info.

What you need to do is make sure your software recognizes the images as 300 DPI images when it prints. It needs to do this in order for them to come out the right size. Most of us have used Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or the free GIMP editors for this purpose.

Secondly, you either need a borderless printer or some legal-size paper for this to work. The reason is because the covers are 10.867 inches long and 4.567 inches wide. Most printers will not fit this properly onto regular 8.5x11'' paper. I recommend buying some good, bright white (90+ brightness) paper for this.

Which brings me to my next point. Glossy paper is not a necessity. In fact many people have had trouble getting their thick glossy paper to fold easily enough when inserted into the cases. Even regular, bright white paper looks good when inserted, and the clear pocket holding the covers in add their own glossy look anyway.

Another idea, as opposed to directly printing these from photo editing software, is that you could use a word processor to load, size, and print the image. If you open Microsoft Word, tell Page Setup to use Landscape and Legal Size Paper, and then go Insert, Picture, From File, and insert the cover image, you could then size the image on the page to exactly 10.867 inches by 4.567 inches on the page, and then print it out. I guess it's an alternative if you're not any good with paint/photo programs.

Until then, however, I personally will collect as many as possible.

It's a few pages back, but i'll sumarize. You have to cut out a little bar of the plastic.

When you open your case, it should look like this on the left side

| --------------------------------------------
| --------------------------------------------

| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |>

cut the red portion to fit the manual vertically (cut out the "bar" that sticks out a little, so you can fit your manual in)

I have an exacto knife set like the one below. I used the flat-blade attatchment, which is the second one from the left. It makes it easy to scrape/level the plastic. You can also start it off with a nail clipper.

I'm ordering 100 of them, and I'm taking requests on a first come, first served basis (I guess). Just add a reply to this thread so everyone knows. I'm keeping 25 of them, so there are 75 left for other CAGs.

slash000 has claimed 25 already
heyyoeddie has now claimed 10

So there are 40 left...

I'll just be charging the amount they cost me, plus shipping (I'm not looking to make any money off these, of course).

Okay, this is going to sound stupid. But I've been searching for nearly 2 months for a place to print these pictures. Kinko's doesn't have big enough paper. And no one I know has a color printer.

Office Max doesn't do photo quality prints, but they do have the right sized paper.

Someone give me an idea!!! (and a link to a print guide if possible)

You don't need photo quality prints. Just have them print them on the highest-quality setting on regular quality Legal (8 x 14) paper. You don't need to print them on glossy paper or anything (they look fine on regular paper, the plastic gives it a nice shine).

Well, is Kinkos able to print without borders?

Because these covers are actually 10.867 inches long. They will fit on 8.5x11 paper if you print without any borders. I know some regular home printers allow for this. Perhaps Kinkos does too...
