We are keeping this thread for discussions, but please visit Snowcone's site at Snackbar Games (www.snackbar-games.com/gbacovers.php) for all the GBA cover action you could ever need!!

While I started this project in November of '04, and have done about a dozen of these myself, Snowcone has really run with it!! While a handful of other users have now contributed as well, Snowcone has proven that he has WAY too much spare time on his hands  by doing a zillion of them! He says more are on the way, and we also owe a big thanks to Heavy Liquid for sharing a ton of raw box scans that we've been able to use. Thanks!!

Snowcone has now created a webpage dedicated to these covers here: www.snackbar-games.com/gbacovers.php!! Let's keep this thread alive as a place to discuss these things, but do all of our file and scan swapping through the new page.

Enjoy!!

When I got my DS and Mario 64 DS, I was struck by how cool-looking (though not very portable) the mini-DVD-style cases are. I've always wanted a way to store my GBA games on my gameshelf in a manner similar to my PS/PS2/DC/XB/GC games. So, since all DS cases have a GBA cart slot in them as well, I decided to start a little project.
(BTW, if you want to do this too, you can buy empty DS game cases in the nintendo.com store.)

So, in the tradition of MookyJooky's PS1/DC DVD cover thread (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26277), here are my DS-sized GBA covers (and also a real cover for the Metroid DS demo)! These files, when printed out, should fit perfectly into the DS game cases.
We hope you guys like 'em! if you want to use these, feel free: just click on the links below the pics to download the higher-resolution files that are good to print. I ordered 20 empty DS cases from nintendo for $18 shipped; why not?!? 8)
Anyway, give us your feedback on these; I'd like to know what you guys think.

Man, I love shit like this. These shouldn't be that hard too make either, because you can find high-quality boxart for most games at amazon. Cool idea bro.

yeah, you can usually get the fronts at amazon, but not the backs. I actually scanned all these myself, and then photoshopped them. Actually, i lost the box for Castlevania: HOD, so i got those pics from cdcovers.cc; they aren't as good, but they'll do for now...
The scanning took a little while because my scanner's a bit slow, but the photoshop work was really easy.

hopefully i'll get around to doing the rest of my games (and my friends', too) sometime soon...

thanks for the kind words!

Hey, these are pretty cool. But how big are the DS game cases? are they like GBA boxes but plastic? Because I would think it easier to store the games in some sort of wallet/case rather than drag all these boxes around. Though they're darn sweet as show peices/

yeah, they aren't very portable, and i'll still use a wallet (or my pockets) to carry the games around. These are more for my home use; they look really nice on my shelf with all my other games, and its a good way to keep them organized with their manuals, etc.

Awesome dude. I don't need to reformat my entire collection, as appetizing as that is, so 20 cases is a bit overkill for me :D

And my printer is from 1993.

Yeah, i f'd up those links - they are fixed now. sorry a'bout that!

and mooky - i actually lied about using photoshop...well, it's just so much easier to say "photoshopped" rather than say "illustrator-ed." I actually just measured out the Mario DS inlay and then created an Illustrator template from there - so i'm not really using a .psd template...

but hey - feel free to make up some of these! I certainly don't care about being the one-and-only around here. go for it!

organicow,

This is a great idea!!! Although I don't have my DS yet...my birthday is right around the corner so I wasn't allowed to buy my own...if I saw these cases held GBA games I probably would have looked to do the same thing. This may actually make me get rid of all the boxes I am saving. Do the GBA instructions fit inside the cases?

I started to make covers for my playstation magazine demo discs when I saw the XBOX had slimline DVD cases for their demos. I just scanned the inserts and added a back to it so I could put them into slimline DVD cases. Here is one I did:

http://img129.exs.cx/img129/3533/CopyofCover84Custom.jpg

Thanks for all the covers and I look foward to seeing new ones!!!

Just wondering...What program are you printing these out from?

organicow

am i the only retarded one who trys to print these and they come out WAY too big?
Just wondering...What program are you printing these out from?

Hopefully, i can answer both of these at once:
I use photoshop to print out the .jpgs. it, and most other image/graphics prigrams allow you to determine the print size. stealthy, are you trying to print directly from your browser? if so, that won't work since monitors can't display the same resolution that printed paper can; therefore graphics as you view them on the screen aren't always actual-size.

so, the files as i saved them are the right size, at 300 dpi resolution. try printing them with a program that allows you options like: print actual size, resize to fit paper, custom size, etc. that way you can make sure to get it right.

also, some people have pm'ed me to ask what sort of paper i print on. the answer is "everyday use" SATIN photopaper. It is much cheaper than the glossy shit, but the quality is great for this use; you don't need to use a really glossy paper since you are going to be putting the printout behind clear plastic anyway. plus, this paper is slightly thinner than regular photopaper and therefore it bends better around the folds of the case.

and BTW, you have to have a printer that allows you to print pretty close to the edge of the paper - otherwise it might clip off a bit of the edge...

yeah, someone already asked me for it; i actually used Illustrator for them, so i just measured out the deminsions and created a template. i know most people would use Photoshop, but i don't have a .psd for it. I can tell you though that the standard size is 11.6 cm x 27.4 cm, with the spine being approx. 1.6 cm wide. hopefully that will help you guys create your own template/format files.

Keep 'em comin' guys; I can't wait to see what you all can do!! 8)

you can buy one case for $1, but they screw you on shipping. You can get 5 for $4, and 10 for $7. Then it is like $3 shipping. So, I ordered 20 cases for $19 shipped. not too bad.

that's not a bad idea. if you could find a place that would print them for cheaper than the cost of phot paper and printer ink, that'd be cool...or if your printer sucks...

How did you get the resolution on the GBA covers so nice? If you made them at 300 resolution, the GBA covers come out painfully small, so when you re-scale them, they look kind of pixelated. I'm using Photoshop.

I'm not sure what we're doing different... here's my process from start to finish:
1. scan gba boxes with my HP scanner at 300 dpi, using the 'import -> from scanner' function in Photoshop.
2. crop them to get any edges off, adjust contrast, etc.
3. drag and drop the saved scans onto my blank template (sized appropriately, and at 300 dpi). this template has a canvas size (and therefore print size) that matches the DS case.
4. arrange everything right
5. print with my Epson R300M printer. it is important to note that in order to get there covers to look right, you have to have a printer that allows you to print really close to the edge of the paper...otherwise some will get cut off...

that's it! theoretically, if you just downloaded one of my 300dpi .jpgs, you could open it in PS, and then drag and drop your 300 dpi scans on top of it.

Hm. I guess the difference is I'm not scanning, I'm getting the cover from Amazon and creating the back cover from scratch. Hm..... I used the dimensions you used, though, so in the end, it should be the same size and such, even though we took different paths. It's just a pain for me to arrange/scale the imported pictures. I wish I had a scanner.

ah, yes. getting the covers from amazon is trouble because they are only 72 dpi (usually). that's why they are so pixelated when you size them. you should try www.cdcovers.cc. they have front and back scans that are not the best, but generally much better resolution than amazon. the site is a bit wonky to navigate, but i've gotten a few things off there before.

5. print with my Epson R300M printer. it is important to note that in order to get there covers to look right, you have to have a printer that allows you to print really close to the edge of the paper...otherwise some will get cut off...

that's it! theoretically, if you just downloaded one of my 300dpi .jpgs, you could open it in PS, and then drag and drop your 300 dpi scans on top of it.

Connect to form.... Bumpatron!!!

Sorry to bother you but do you know the size specs of the DS box? Thanks.

Just thought that I'd drop a quick note about the instruction book fitting in there. I tried this last night in my feel the magic case and i came up with a few thoughts. First you can just leave it sitting to the right of the little hooks that hold down the book if you are worried about the hooks causing the book to have a permanent bend over time, otherwise you can also use something like an exacto knife to cut out the top part that is meant to keep the DS instruction books in there tightly. I know that it's not much but I hope that it helps someone. :?

Okay, I made some low-res versions that have been sized back up to what they should be to be printed at full-size to make the screen. I started with a lot of low-quality images, many have the watermark from the Moby Games website or show the reflection from the shrinkwrap on the edge of the box, but I printed them out and despite being 500x500ish images originally, they look fairly decent, so if you can't wait for people to upload high-res scans of some of these games, you can go ahead and grab them from me. Here's a list of what I did:
Advance Wars 1
Chu Chu Rocket
Dr. Mario
Golden Sun
Guilty Gear X Advance Edition
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Super Mario World: Mario Advance 2
Metroid Fusion
Pokemon Sapphire
Wario Ware: Mega Microgame$
You can find mine in this folder:

and I went ahead and took the liberty of mirroring the other ones that had been posted already:

If anyone has the box art for Advance Wars 2 and could scan it, that would be awesome-- I've only found the front cover in a low-res version. Also, I really would like some box art for my Famicom Mini Series 3 import of Balloon Fight, but there hasn't been a US release, so... uh... unless someone feels like improvising for me, oh well.

Er, maybe I failed to explain above: I didn't scan any of these-- I just looked around the internet for box art. Moby Games seemd to have the majority of them, and so they are low-res, blurry, and most of them have little Moby Games watermarks on them. As I said in my post above, I recognize these aren't of the best quality, but I printed them out on some color printers that the labs here at my university have and they look decent-- that is, the front cover art looks okay and the back cover text is readable. So if you don't want to use them, that's fine, but since I don't really have a way of getting high-res art (no scanners available) and I didn't feel like waiting for someone to post some of the obscure titles I had, I went ahead and made these.

Nah, s'okay. I felt kind of stupid for posting the low-res ones here in the first place since the high-quality ones initially posted look SO GOOD when you print them out, but when I printed out the ones I scrapped together and they looked decent, I figured I might as well throw 'em up here.

I have the automation partially working but it assumes you have the cover, backcover, and spine with the proper dimensions. I will finish up the page tomorrow morning and let you guys have at it.

The cover and backcover both need to be 1535x1370 and the spine needs to be 190x1370. I also pulled out the GBA logo for the spine and cleaned it up a little bit and then I will post a link to it for anyone interested in doing this. If you don't want to do it, you can always do the scans and let me know and I will do it for you.

Sure! Which Metroid did you want - Zero Mission or Fusion? I recently traded off those games (i finished them, but now i'm wishing I'd kept them... :( ), so I'd need to get scans of the box from someone. Can you scan yours? If not, I'm sure I can get them somewhere...

Also, I'm in the process of setting up an ftp on my server so we can all contribute if we want. It'll have an 'inbox' where CAGs can upload scans, and an 'archive' for finished products; that way we can all share easily. I may host other things like mookyjooky's PS1 & DC covers too...we'll aee. The backcover of my first Chain of Memories cover seemed awfully plain so I put some graphics in the background to busy it up.

I fixed up the Metroid cover because I was bored. Part of the cover was a different color and I fixed that.

Look at were the side and back of the cover meet. I guess that would be the left side of the spine. The color is not the same.

My monitor here at the office sucks pretty bad so if there is a slight change then I can't see it.

Nevertheless, 2 new KH:CoM covers:

It could always be cropped a bit on the left and bottom. This could also fix the problem of the logo being rather small.

I will mess with it when I get a chance. I have been on the phone with Dell tech support about a user's computer for over an hour now. I spent the previous 5 hours working on it as well. I hate problems related to heat. They are damned near impossible to diagnose.

Actually. I just had the script I use for my repository build the bbcode list and spit it out for me. If there is not enough space between the link and the next cover I can tweak all that as well. I am down to only having about 13 left to do so more raw box scans would be great. Anyone else order cases and have pics of your new collection? I still haven't ordered my cases. lol.

I only have a few more boxes to scan. Maybe 3 or 4. Metal Slug Advance, Boktai, and a few more I don't remember off hand. I'll try to get to them tonight.

I ordered 20 cases from Nintendo last Friday, and tracking says that they're scheduled to arrive 12/24. I'll have to order more, because that's not even half of my GBA collection.. :o I'm going to try and have the inserts printed on good paper at Kinko's as well. I'll take some pics and put them up as soon as it all comes together. I can't wait! :)

That's up to you as far as doing the code; it's fine with me the way it is. Its just that some CAGs have work environments where commercial sites are inaccessible through their company computers. I think that's why they are able to view my files and not yours...

Please let me know what res you want and which parts you need. Fronts, backs and sides? Can anyone provide their .ai or.psd file as a template so I could even make some myself?
-G

I can post instructions and the action files I use in photoshop to create these. Typically I scan the front, back, and side of the box. Scan them in at 300dpi.

Instructions:
1. Trim off the edges of the scan. This is to remove any worn edges of the box.
2. Reside the front and back of the boxes to 1535x1370.
3. Clean the side image up to be used for the spine of the cover.
4. Resize the spine to 190x1370 and paste this (http://www.snackbar-games.com/cone/images/gbacovers/templates/gba_spine.jpg) into the image and align it to the very top. Shift your spine image around until it looks good.
5. Create an image that is 3260x1370 and copy and paste the previous 3 images into it and align them end to end. Save it and you are done.

The thumbnails I create are 360x151 at 72dpi. Everything else is 300 and sometimes 350 since a lot of heavy liquid's scans were 350dpi.

Nice! I'll try to dig out all my old boxes tonight and start scanning. I know I can get FF1 & 2 tonight cause I just got that yesterday. Thanks for the tips!

Stupid Noob question but I've never been able to get the align in PS to work properly. I can get it to work just fine inillustrator but when I'm in PS it doesn't seem to line up properly. Any tips? Do I align the layers or selections or what?

When you paste them into the 3260x1370 blank image you it should snap the front and back covers into place up against the edges of the canvas and if you made everything the right size, the spine will paste into the new image centered and not need to be moved. Make sure you save them with a quality of 10 in Photoshop as 11 or 12 is much too large of a file.

If you need to you can always use the arrow keys to nudge the layer or selection to line them up in the event that the above method doesn't work.

I suppose if this gets really popular I can build a real page for it along with searchable info.

If I scan in some boxes can I email them to someone so they can put them up on a server? I thought about sites like photobucket, but they have size limitations. Thanks.

Wow, snowcone. I ordered 40 DS cases for all my GBA games a week or two ago, and thought I'd have to make most of them myself. Your covers are amazing. I'll take a picture of all my games in your new cases and host them.

Do it man, this is a really neat idea. I said it before, but you guys should email this to all over the major game magazines and websites. Having that kind of exposure could have people all over the country making their own GBA/DS covers. Who knows, Nintendo might even jump on this!

we're willing to make covers for anything, so long as we can get scans of the covers - can you get us those?

Well, thanks to Snowcone, I've got at a Pokemon Sapphire scan :) But try as I might, I can't find the back cover for Pokemon Pinball, and I no longer have the box for it. Here's hoping someone else out there happens to have it. Keep up the great work, guys!

I think you might be getting a bit ambitious, but yeah, we should spread the word on this.

I nearly finished the FF1&2 box this AM. I forgot to take the GBA logo file Snowcone posted home with me last night. Without that there's no uniformity. I'll have it done tomorrow AM. Just didn't want anyone else working on that one too since there are so many to do.

On another note the Final Fight One box I have was a used one from EB and has sticker gunk all over it. I have the back and sides fine but no front. SO any help with that one would be appreciated!

Another Question. Why is the file size so low on the Zelda LTTP cover? Should it be redone at a higher res or...???

Cool. I can redo that one if necessary. Oh bTW, those instructions you gave are great, Snowcone. Everything lined up great. I'm kicking myself for not taking that file home to finish this one.

I guess I should have posted that I sent FF I & II to Snowcone last night. Sorry about that. Maybe your version will be better.

I can compare them and see which one comes out cleaner overall and then post that one. For anyone that has created these covers, make sure I know who you are so when I finish the page on my site I can give credit to the original author.

Gaaackkkk!!! Oh well. I'll finish it up tonight since I'm so far along with it anyway. I'll probably do COntra Advanced next since I'm pretty sure I didn't see that one yet. Or maybe Mario 1 or 2.

Yeah, that was one of the original batch of cases i made, and i couldn't find the box. So, I just used pics from cdcovers.cc, which are not as good as reg scans. I did that way before I realized that others would actually give a shit about this; I thought I was just making the covers for myself...

If anyone has that box and would like to redo it, feel free!!

I'm on it! That's a pretty important game to add to the collection. I'll try to put together a list of things I can do with the boxes I have tonight as well. No point in people doing stuff twice!:D

Would anyone be interested in doing this for F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, Megaman Battle Network 3: Blue , and Sword of Mana? I can get the covers scanned at 300 dpi if need be.

Sword of Mana is available on page 11 of this post. I have some requests:

Baseball Advance
Driver 2
Earthworm Jim
Final Fight
Invicible Iron Man
Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX
Mega Man Zero 2
Metal Slug Advance
NHL 2002
Pac-Man (Classic Nes Series)
Spider-Man Mysterio's Menace
Spider-Man: The Movie
Spider-Man: The Movie 2
Star X
Super Dodge Ball Advance
Super Mario Bros. (Classic NES Series)
Super Mario Advance
Super Mario Advance 2
Super Street Fighter II Turbo
Tomb Raider: The Prophecy
X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse

I have the boxes but I just moved out of my house so it could be quite awhile before I get to them. Seriously though THANKS guys for these. Once I saw this thread I wanted to make covers as well since I already do something similar for my PS2 Demo Discs. Thanks to Organicow and Snowcone especially since half of my collection is already finished now.
