One off-season, while still playing for the Chicago Bulls, Ron Artest applied for a job at Circuit City. On the job application he wrote down "NBA player" as his last job and used Bulls president Jerry Krause's name as a reference. And he did it all just so he could get the employee discount on home electronics.

Go back and read that paragraph again. An NBA player, earning a seven-digit salary, applied for a job at Circuit City so he could get 10%-15% off of his electronics purchases. He didn't offer to sign a few autographs for customers if they'd give him a deal. He didn't try and use his status as a basketball player to get free stuff.

There's more to the article but it just says how much of an idiot he is. But there is actually a possibility that Artest actually visits  these boards, so don't flame him too much or he'll PM CheapyD and get you banned.

If I won the lottery I wouldn't stop coming here for deals.....

You have to stay cheap to stay rich.

LOL! I read that too! Actually, I find it hard to believe they don't give him a discount for buy so much damn stuff and bein' a celeb. On a related note, Latrell Sprewell doesn't think $76,500/day is enough to raise his 8 kids.

Explain to me why again this means he is an idiot? I am not debating that he is or isn't an idiot, but I don't think this adds to the cause. He's just thrifty. He likely didn't come from a rich family so his thriftiness or his memory of having nothing likely was still ingrained (sp?) in his head.

Or he'll bum-rush into your house and beat the crap out of you. Don't throw any beer, cause that'll REALLY make him mad...

But don't forget he's doing a lot of positive things for the NBA too ! (his words)

The rich do not need deals, they get shit for free. They have so much shit that they havent paid for, which is why they shop so damn much. They always get the hook up. Why do you think they have so much shit they dont need, and still have money to burn.

Maybe. I wouldn't call him an idiot either. On the other hand, he's making millions. It's one thing to clip coupons or buy items during a sale, but to go so far as to actually get a job just for the discount... :? That position could be filled by someone else who might actually need the job/money, while he doesn't really have to work during the off-season. And really, what's 10% off to someone with that amount of money?

I dunno, just rubs me the wrong way. Not cool.

The rich may not need deals, but they sure do need a tax cut. To hell with social security, education, Medicare, the environment, etc. as long as we make the tax cut for wealthy Americans permanent.

um, rich does not equal free stuff.... maybe being a celebrity does...

The fact that he applied for a job instead of trying to use his status to get a deal is almost ... noble.

I heard it was Best Buy he applied to, and that was from Chicago sportswriter Jay Mariotti. Does anyone know if it was Circuit City or Best Buy?

I read Circuit City in The Washington Post.

On a similar note, Andy Kaufman was a busboy at a New York diner during most of the time he was famous.

I've thought about doing something like that. I work 3 12's and get paid for 40 hrs at my main job and I thought about applying at BestBuy to work the holidays and get the discount.

Yah even if I win the lottery I would still try to get the best deals on games. I think it's more fun hunting down deals rather than going straight to Best Buy to get the game for $49.99 w/o bother using the $5 GGC.

Someone needs to tell him that Best Buy has a better employee discount of %5 above cost. Just don't get his attention by throwing something at him.

I read Circuit City before as well.

And rich doesn't necessarily mean "throw our money around". That's just stupid.

I think I'm pretty well off, but if I can get a discount, I'll take it. Not doing it usually just reeks of arrogance.

Oh, apparently two fans are banned from The Palace now as a result of last month's brawl between the Pacers and Piston fans.

I spent four hours the other night looking for cheaper airline tickets. Ended up with one for $1500 a 25% savings from the advertised prices.

I wouldn't say cheap though. Just frugal. That's $500 I could now spend on something else. It's all about redirecting your resources in as many ways as possible.

I wonder what it would've been like if Ron Artest worked at a CC. He would prob be in the music section trying to promote his R&B album.

As much as I am all for his cheapass ways, he could have taken the job from someone that actually needed it. You know, someone that can't afford to pay people to wipe their ass.

Lol this reminds me of a short write up SI had about Presit Holmes. I guess he is notrious in getting other people to foot the bill for dinner. I guess he crashed either his agent's or a friends house to get dinner for free the day he signed his multimillion contract with the chiefs instead of going out and celebrating in style

He should have applied somewhere where he could get some higher-end stuff. Circuit City carries some stuff that is too high-end for BB, but there is much better stuff out there (not that I'd turn down the CC or even BB stuff, but he's got his rep to consider).

Artest may want to re-apply to start working at CC again. He will need the discount and extra money after paying his legal fees and damages.

I don't mean he's an idiot for this, but for what he did to the fans. But still this is a little wacky.

God help the poor sap that refused to buy an extended warranty from him.
