View Full Version : Military screws over one of my classmates

This girl in the education program with me, served a year in Iraq before going back to school, well she signed up for the reserves, I am not sure if it was mandatory or not, and now her reserve unit is being sent over for a year in Iraq and she has to leave the program. So she will have 2 years over in Iraq. This shit really pisses me off, I wish all those people who are for the war should be fighting it instead of sending others to fight for them.

Maybe, just maybe, this all could have been avoided if she didn't sign up for the military. I don't mean to be insensitive, obviously you don't want your friend to go to Iraq, but, within reason (I do feel bad for those being called up after being out of the military for a long time) I can't feel bad for the person being shipped off in these situations. Also, ummmmm, your avatar is sickening me.

Thank you, and I'm going to.
She signed up, this is what she signed up for, she doesn't like it too damn bad, she shouldn't have signed up for it then.
The only people that complain are the ones that signed up during Clinton's years thinknig they will get free shit and never have to do anything. They were wrong, they shouldn't have joined if they didn't like what they were getting into.
And for the second time ever, I agree with PAD.

No one enjoys the death of Iraqis, what a wach job, but a "few" Iraq deaths to free them are better than a lot of pointless deaths by Saddam.
Right now we are killing because from outside the country because Bush was to God damn dumb to make a plan to keep them out.

When did she sign up?
I have a friend who signed up about four months after 9/11.
Guess what? *gasp* he was sent to Afghanistan.
Don't sign up if you're not willing to serve.
That's like working at McDonald's and not being willing to clean out the fryer.

I am here now. And I am in the reserves.
And I am for the war.
You don't provide enough facts to intelligently discuss this. Specifically was she active duty when she went the first time? Was she in the reserves?
You aren't very clear.
You need better facts.
CTL

She was in active duty her first tour, she then transferred or was placed in the reserves when she started up school again.
CTLesq
12-06-2004, 04:11 AM
Well if she was active duty then there is no "protection" such as had she been in the reserves and served a year.
Take for instance the following example. Had she been in the reserves and served a statutory year in Iraq she shouldn't have to serve again for at least a year.
But when you cross lines from active duty to reserves there are no such procections.
Something to be upset about? No because it was never guaranteed to begin with.

Would be interesting to know what they told her when she signed up for the reserves. I know they lie alot in recruiting, not sure how much they lie in these cases. I remember a cousin of my almost signed up for the military, he didn't have a high school diploma (which is required) and when he asked the guy if he could join the marines he was told he'd be a perfect fit.

Not to lambast you, but when you sign up for active duty, you serve a minimum of four in active duty and four more in ready reserves. As a reservist, the same is true. It may not be fair, but it's part of her job. Just like students who call me a motherf*cker for giving thema well-deserved F. We all have bad sides to our jobs. hers just happens to suck worse than angst filled teens.

You know what I love about these threads?
Everyone and their brother knows recruiters "lie" except for the poor dolt who is signing up.
Let me clue you in on three things (1) people hear what they want to hear (2) most people don't know what to ask recruiters and when things don't turn out to be chocolate milk and a lollipop guess what - the recruiter "lied".
And finally (3) if you didn't get it in writing - you didn't get it.

Its not that they get more money. They are under incredible pressure to get people to sign up. Many of the people who do the recruiting job are serious about their military careers. Personally, I think it is the worst job in the military and I don't envy them or the tactics they have to use to keep their jobs and careers.
He would have been just as happy to have signed you up while you blew your BF in front of him as he would have been to sign me up while I filled out an application to the NRA.

The better questions is did she (holy shit its her responsibility, to take care of herself?) ask the right questions and get guarantees in writing?
Cause I guarantee her enlistment contract states she can be assigned for the needs of the military.

Hey moron you need to check your facts. I have gotten at least a 2.8% pay raise each year I have been in the military which just passed the 8 year mark. In fact ever since Bush came into office the pay raise has been bigger. I also have seen the tax free housing allowance that we receive raise $200 in the govt's attempt to limit our out of pocket housing costs. I make enough to live quite comfortable. You are widely misinformed check your facts next time before posting.

Funny that sounds alot more like your wanna be know-it-all comments. People in the military voting or being republican because of a pay raise has little to do with the Roman Empire. Everybody with a government job typically does the same thing. If city firefighters see more money and support from Democratic mayors vs. Republicans mayors, guess which party they'll vote for mayor, it's got very little to do with history and much more to do with how much money you make.

Roman troops supported the Roman Emperors who paid them handsomely. Jharlee's post insinuated that he switched to supporting the Republican leaders because the chief Republican leader would consistently pay him more money.
I support the leaders who I believe have the best policies for America, not the ones who will give my class the biggest tax cut. I tend to think that this is what the Founding Fathers were hoping for.
And I think you missed my point Duomax. I come here to put forth my opinions of the matter. You may not like the choice of words I use to argue my position, however you should still debate me on where you think I am wrong, after all I believe good debate is the best way to learn about our current government and the reasoning behind each other's opinions. I get your point Camoor, but I don't see what the Romans have to do with it, especially when it's a common thing for alot of people in government jobs to do the same thing. For example my mom's a teacher and she almost always votes democrats, at least at the local levels, because they typically offer more support and money for her profession. When people step in that booth they don't think "Hey if I vote for the Republicans because they give me a big paycheck then we'll be just like the Romans."
Believe it or not I don't usually sisagree with what you say, but you always frame things in the context of anceint history. Lots of us know history, but most of us don't try and place the context of our arguments from examples that occured thousands of years ago. In short, my point is that just because there are vague similarites doesn't mean we are becoming a "militaristic empire" as you pointed out.

I'm sure not all Democrats feel that way but if I had a position in Congress or was President I'd try to slowly cut Military funding or cut prison funding first. However in doing so I'd try to make sure the Military people got transition education so they could land another job.
I think we overspend on prisons period and need to repeal most of the Rockefeller laws and move that money to the schools for an education. I mean we spend like $35K a year per prisoner which is absurd when you consider how much each kid is worth in public school. And honestly with prison I'm for them being punished AND getting an education. After all I don't want my money to end up being flushed down a black hole because said criminal didn't have the job skills to get a good job and went to prison because he committed a crime for money to buy food or whatever.

Well, I live near DC so maybe all those Greco-Roman temples and Egyptian Needles are clouding my judgement
Seriously though, when I really think about it, the similarities between the United States and the Roman Empire are just mind-blowingly amazing considering the different technologies available to both civilizations. I do admit I probably over-play it.
The Roman Empire started out as a Republic with a Senate and their own form of "Manifest Destiny". They had problems with Egypt and food, we have problems with the Mid East and Oil. They liked Gladiators and Chariot Races, we like Football and Nascar (OK that last point stretches it  )
I just think we can learn so much by not making the same mistakes that the Romans did, IMO we should continually strive to make government a tool of the people, not the other way around.

I was just curious because it was an interesting culture and I wanted to read more about it. I think the nation fell apart around 1500 AD

You could always leave, no one is making you come here.
But Quack did... ](*,) a few too many times.

Well, maybe we could be a little more like China, maybe in the food department.

There is a reason a high percentage of military people are Republican. We usually get bigger pay raises with a Rep. Reagan had some outrageously high raises during his tenure. I was a Democrat before I came in but I transferred over as well
God forbid you should think about social issues like Gay marriage, abortion and censorship for a few examples. I guess only your wage matters right?
I personally know of someone in the Military who is a Democrat and keeps their principles.
Madcow Syndrome strikes again right?
Actually I believe Bush's stance on gay marriage is overly heavy handed. I'm all for people living their own lives. But I hate how democrats fund the military and I'm not just talking wages i mean equipment as well. I would be dumb not to vote the way that makes my life the easiest
I wouldnt be on hating democratic funding of the military. It was Clinton's army that went into Afghanistan. Bush's budget had not effected the military by the time we went to war. So all that tech that allowed us to "win" so easily was all because of a democrat's decisions.

We did it in spite of the budget Clinton gave us not because. An area that got badly underfunded was buildings. The security force headquarters here looks like a crack house it is one of the worst buildings I have ever seen and like 300 people work there. And even though the Tech helps us it is still up to the people to execute properly.
