View Full Version : Buy a BMW for 90% off!!! Among other things...

Ok so here's the deal. You might have heard about this on TV:
If you have an American Express credit card, go to My Life My Card.com (http://www.mylifemycard.com) (http://www.mylifemycard.com) and check out these awesome deals!
The website is giving away awesome deals on major purchases every day. One deal, one day. You can look up this week's purchases, how many of each are available, how much they cost, and how much they would normally cost (if not on sale).
A word of forewarning: These are great deals, but they are not cheap!!! Many of these deals are over $1000. For example, today's deal is a luxury travel package from Abercrombie and Kent (not the clothing A&F bastards) for $2500. It normally costs $25,000. So it's an awesome deal, 90% off. There are plenty of terms and conditions for the deals, so make sure to read the conditions first!
You must use an American Express credit card in order to buy these products at these prices.
Supposedly at some point you'll be able to buy a brand new BMW for $5000. Or so says the TV commercial.
Check out this site, if only to see how the other half lives!

Nope. No spam. Just saw the deal on TV while watching Comedy Central and checked it out. Thought I should share.
As far as Ramifications of buying a big purchase on a credit card. No idea. I know that a lot of credit cards have extended warranties and other stuff that like included, but you'd have to check your cardmember agreement thing they sent you when you got the card. So far I have never had any problem paying for large things with my credit card.

C'mon CAG! Who wouldn't buy a $5000 new BMW?? It's as cheapass as anyone will probably get next to free for a new BMW. Plus if you really don't want it, sell it on Ebay right after! You'll make your money back even if you sell it for $6000.

I know my father would easily drop $5000 on a new BMW. He is/was a car mechanic, and he collects a lot of cars. If anyone gets more information about the next car sale date, please let me know!

Yeah definitely post if anyone finds out when in December they're selling more BMWs!
There has to be some catch. No way a 42,000 dollar sports car is being sold for 5,000. You could turn around and sell it, and make 30 grand with no effort at all. File this under: Too good to be true.

New beemers are just amazing. Anyone who would not take a brand new BMW at 5k is plain stupid. It's a reliable mode of transportation that would last 200k miles easy. My moms thinking of buying a brand new z4 3.0i. I thought my 1994 BMW was amazing. Oh my god, everything about that z4 was perfect. The steering was responsive, the shifting was nice and smooth, I could go on and on. Of course I'm biased though...

Just bought a brand new 350xi for 30 grand after loads of discounts and days of work.

I agree Kaw, there has to be some kind of catch to it. Like for example, Do you have to be a long time member and be in good standing? Is this open to all levels of AMEX cardholders? Do you have to have spend a certain amount of money in order to qualify for any of the prizes? I know these are stupid questions, but they have to be asked.

12-06-2004, 04:29 PM
You could consider the fact that American Express is doing this so they can write this off on their taxes. I don't know if the money they get from the auction is being donated to charity but I think this deal is true but it's definitely self-serving. So I'm fairly sure that the catch is AmEx is going to get to write off a lot this year as well as the companies that donated: BMW, Canon, etc.

I don't think you have to be a long time member but I do know one of my friend's mom got an email informing her of her long time customer loyalty and as such told her about the auction 2 weeks before it was generally known. We thought it was bogus as well until we confirmed w/ AmEx customer service (the one that was on her card, not the email just in case it was spam) and they said it was true.

I had one.... a 99 BMW.
Dont forget the $18 brake light bulbs. The special key to do the oil changes or the $180 oil changes at the dealer... The "special" or "dealer/factory" requirement for almost every part.
They are ok cars, they can be expensive and they can be reliable. But if you prefer to do your own work then they are really frustrating and their reliablity ratings are actually not very good.

As far as I can tell, there are no "tricks" here. Of course there's a ton of fine print, and while I may have started this thread, I'm not putting all the fine print for each deal up here (you can read your own damn fine print if you want to spend that kind of money).
One I did read was the first class airline tickets to select cities around the world. Travel dates were restricted to certain times and there was only a select list of places that you could go, and you had to use the tickets by a certain date. Stuff like that. Simple stuff that's fairly normal for discount stuff. You don't have to sell your soul to AMEX or pledge allegiance to Diablo or anything like that so far as I can tell.
jaykrue is right though, think about how much in total AMEX is going to be able to write off in taxes since the proceeds go to charities. We're talking close to a million bucks! That's a crapload of money, even for a big corporation.

Oh yeah. Maybe one catch: Certain AMEX cards require that you pay everything off at the end of the month. Only certain type of AMEX cards allow you to carry a balance (like the AMEX Blue, or Blue Cash). That could really hurt to have to shell out 5 grand all at once, but hey, for a new BMW? It's tempting.

Hells ya that's tempting and also smart if you thought about how much car payments are per month for any old non-luxury type cars vs. a nice luxury sports car which you'll be able to pay off quick (quicker if you sell it on Ebay for more than $5000 - which you most definitely will be able to do)

So let's see.... cars depreciate (that's lose value - worth less money - kiddies) 40% as soon as you drive it off the lot. So a new BMW z4 3.0i retails at $42,500. So as soon as you take ownership of it, it's still worth $25,500. That's a loss of $17,000 in value, but the car is still worth 5 times what you paid for it! Plus you could sell it privately (read eBay) for a ton more! Like I've said before.... tempting.

Yea, all of these deals are for real and they are exactly like a contest. Sort of like the 'Be the 84th person to call' sort of thing. There are just a few of these things available.
The reason AE can afford to do it is because they form a partnership with these companies. They get great deals on these to give them away for cheap prices..they get tons of people signing up for AE or at least thinking of doing so. BMW, these cruises and such, they all get pub too. It's a win-win for everyone. These aren't little companies. They can afford to do this without even batting an eye. For the money they pay on advertising every year, this is just a drop in the hat with probably a lot better results.

Also, regarding the BMWs, it appears they are doing one at a time, at 12PM, 4PM, and 9PM ET. I don't like my chances, especially since I don't use credit cards (by choice).
What is funny about this promotion is that they make the winners pay. Talk about a lousy contest. I mean, sure, the price is low, but aren't most prize giveaways free (except for taxes).

Xtreme331
12-09-2004, 10:10 PM
No, it's not random. It's first come first serve. It's based on the clock that they have displayed on their website. When it rolls over to the time they designate (12PM, 4PM, and 9PM) they will sell off a certain number of products (in the case of the BMW, one at a time) on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Have you actually seen the black card? These things are exceedingly rare and are only given out to... like.. the top 2% of the richest people in the world. I mean they come with a personal attendant for God's sake! There are also a lot of fakes floating around, again because they're so damn rare.
But hey, if he does have it. That's freaking sweet. You could (theoretically) buy a whole damn airplane with one of those things if you wanted to!! Now that's buying power!

Ok. Maybe I'm not being perfectly clear. Let me try again.
They are selling ONE BMW at 12PM, ONE at 4PM, and ONE at 9PM. You visit the site and click on the "I want it" button. If the item you are attempting to buy (in this case a BMW) is still available, you will be taken to a page where you enter your AMEX card number and shipping address, etc. If the item is already sold, you get a message saying "Not Available." You are buying the product directly from AMEX, who has acquired these items directly from the products' parent companies. AMEX is giving these items to its cardholders at deeply discounted prices to "thank their cardmembers for their business throughout the year."
If you have any more questions click HERE (http://www.mylifemycard.com/mywishlist/faq.html) to view their FAQ. Hopefully this will clear up all the confusion.

Is that personally or can you get it if you're the CEO and your company spends over 200K
From what i know of it, you have to personally spend that much. It's a personal card, not a business card, but oh man are the perks great. You call AMEX up, tell them you what you want, they arrange it and charge it to the black card. No hassle on your part. Must be nice to be rich. =P~

Anyone else try this crap? I'm not sure what kind of publicity AMEX planned on generating with this site, but if it's a negative one they succeeded. I tried for the car three times today at 12:00:00, 4:00:00, and 9:00:00 each time it said, "You missed it!". I figured I wouldn't get the car anyways, but it could at least give me the hope that by entering my info I might have a slight chance of winning. No way anyone typed their information in, or even had a script run and complete in less than one second.
My wishlst? More like AMEX is on my shitlist. Bah Humbug.

Are you sure you did according to the site? The times are set for Eastern Standard meaning East Coast times. So if you live in the Midwest (which is where I'm at), you'd hafta do it at 11am, 3pm, and 8pm (an hour ago which I did and of course didn't get through)

You had to type in info? When I tried all day today, I just clicked on the 'I want it' button and a popup window told me it was 'checking to see available quantities'. But that's as far as I got all 3 times.

No, he didn't get an info page. He said he wished he would have gotten one to at least ease the pain a bit :)
Secondly, if the info page comes up it means you won (supposedly), so as long as you keep the window open you should be able to take your sweet ass time to put the info in.
There's also a long delay, and sometimes it would kick me off the "I want it" window and tell me the server was at max capacity. Overall, it is a cool concept, but very poorly implemented.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the clarification. It's a good thing there's supposed to be one more chance.

It did the same deal for me. I clicked on the button right when the clock turned 12:00 (and 4 and 9), and it it did the checking available quantities for a second, then it said "You missed it!".
That's why I thought it seemed sketchy. I really doubt someone managed to type in their information in a second. I think it should at least let me try to enter my CC information, so I can feel that I lost by slow copying & pasting.
Sorry, I just thought it was a crappy contest and needed to vent. :?

The odds of you winning the car (or most any of the items) are fairly poor. I tried different tactics each time, and all of them failed. The problem is there is a huge delay when a bunch of people get on to "bid", and when that happens the results are unpredictable, since you have no real way of measuring exactly how long it will take from the time you hit the button to when it should check to see if you won the item.

Yeah, I know but it's still fun to try. So do you suggest clicking on the 'I want it' button right at 3:59 instead of 4:00 to give yourself some clicktime leeway?

If you had read the details you would have learned something kinda odd.... Their "giveaway" clock is synchronized with the US national atomic clock. They tell you that because of internet lag, the clock you see on the website is actually about 3 seconds behind the "official" clock. So you might have been better trying to click around 3:59:57, etc.
Plus, come on man! Thousands of people were flooding that website trying to buy that car, and you didn't get it? What do you expect? You can't win everything. Deal with it.

I posted this deal, was all excited about it, and was definitely going to try and get the BMW, and then... well...
I was working at noon so no bid there. But I got off at 3:00 and made it home with plenty of time. Unfortunately i was so tired, i dozed off on the couch and woke up at 4:10 when my dog nudged me 'cause she needed to go pee. Then at 9:00 i was busy playing Prince of Persia on my new Xbox and totally forgot about the BMW! Doh! oh well. I'll have to keep an eye out to see if they offer the car again.

^^ Can't physically confirm that they haev 'em 'cause i haven't won any, but then i can't imagine that AMEX would offer these deals and then not have ANY of the products they were selling. Just remember: this stuff is really popular and a LOT of people are trying to buy them all at the same time you are. There is a chance you will not be able to get any. Good luck though!

Alright Guys! This is the last few days of these great deals!
Sunday you can buy two nights for two in a suite at the Bellagio for $999. Expensive, but the Bellagio is so nice.
Monday you have your last shot at the remaining 3 BMW Z4s for $5000.
Tuesday is the last day of the promotion and you can buy a Delphi MyFi XM personal satellite radio for $125 (of course you have to pay the subscription fees for satellite radio, but whatever).
As of yet, i have bought nothing, but have drooled over several things. Good luck to all in these last few days!
I actually got lucky and won one of the Zen Micros. They've charged my AMEX, so hopefully its already been shipped.
