I'm not sure if this is a new price but it seems like a good one. The PS2 Linus Kit is only $99 at Playstation.com. You get a Linux Kit 1.0, Monitor Adapter, 40GB Drive, Network Adapter, USB Keyboard all for $99, pretty sweet especially if you want the HD but not FFXI.

its a great deal except for

"The hard disk drive formatted for Linux cannot be used with HDD-compatible PlayStation 2 games. Basic understanding of the Linux operating system is strongly recommended for installation and use."

so you can only use it for what it says to run linux on.

Still, not to bad if you dont have all that other junk and want to see something pretty cool.

I bought this at $199 a couple years back. I do not regret it at all. Hell I should get another one on principle! The hard drive is not formated prior to arrival so if you have a game that will format the HD it can be used for games.

That being said, the accessories are cool too. I have an official Sony PS2 Branded mouse and Keyboard. Can any of you say the same? Think about it. A mouse, keyboard, network adapter and 40 gig hard drive (that can be used in a PC) for $100. That IS a deal regardless of whether or not you use the Linux kit.

I've experimented with Linux a bit. I wanted to try to learn about game programming but found that my limited knowledge of linux was a real roadblock. It is certainly a good way to learn the basics of linux as long as you don't mind it running a bit slow. Maybe it's just me but a get a kick out of turning my PS2 into a linux box.

Have you created a game with it?

Even if you just use it as a Linux based desktop. Set your system on its side and fix it up with a cheap 15in or 17in flat panel with black casing to match. Talk about sexy...

Does Final Fantasy have the software on the disk to format the Hard Drive for games?

Because this is a good deal for those that dont have a Network Adapter as well...

Well, I have the hdd that came with FFXI and I believe there is a disk to reformat the hard drive in the event that something should happen to it...so that makes me think that one can buy the Linux set and use the hdd format disk (from someone who bought FFXI) to reformat the disk to be game ready.

Again, this is speculation, but it would seem to be the case. It's tempting to buy the kit for $99.00. You could probably make up a quarter of the cost by reselling the Network adapter....So you get the Hard Drive, the keyboard and the mouse for $75.00....hmmm...

So where can I get FFXI only. Because I may end up buying this reformatting and then running FFXI on it since I need the keyboard and mouse and network adapter anyway...

Well the mouse would only really be useful if you plan on using the keyboard as your main source of control.. which is pretty pointless if you ask me. You might as well buy the PC version.

Try GameStop or EB.

So could I.....

Just format that drive and use it as an extra drive for my Windows XP computer? Then sell that keyboard and mouse but keep the network adaptor for playing "Resident Evil Outbreak" online? Then all I would have left is that vga cable which I could use to play games on my pc monitor if I wanted to. Yeah?

Because a good 40GB with no rebates would run me at least $60. And that network adaptor is $40 in stores. So, there is $100 worth of stuff right there!!

taken off of sony's linux faq:

Can I use the HDD as an IDE drive in my PC?
No. Although the HDD provided in the Linux (for PlayStation 2) kit is based on IDE technology, special changes have been made to the drive for use with the PlayStation 2. Use of the HDD with a PC may cause problems with your PC and may make the HDD inoperable with the PlayStation 2.

Can I use the monitor cable with commercial PlayStation 2 games and a monitor ?
In general, no. The Computer Monitor Cable (for PlayStation 2) (with audio connectors) which is provided in the kit will work with PlayStation 2 software that outputs VESA compatible signals. Currently, there are very few commercial PlayStation 2 games available that output in VESA display modes (varies within territory). Very few games offer alternatives to the TV signal standards NTSC and PAL, which cannot be displayed on most computer monitors.
The list is growing however, with games such as Socom offering 'progressive scan' options. Some users have been able to play games that support progressive scan options on their monitors. Please note that playstation2-linux.com does not offer customer support in configuring this to work.

I can't see Eb or Gamestop selling the game alone because you can't trade it in. or the harddrive at least not yet. I really don't want my ffxi any takers? $40
