They're about the same price, so does anyone have first hand experience with either of these. Also will I need to download any programs other than DVDshrink before I start burning?

I purchased and use the Pioneer DVR-108 from Newegg. It has rock solid performance and is has quiet operation. Highly recommended.

I'm not a big pioneer fan after their early stuff had overheating problems.. they may have fixed that now, but I still shy away from their stuff..
NEC is a good choice..
you can go to http://www.doom9.org/ for all sorts of free software.. dvddecrypter, dvdshrink, etc.

I would say get the Pioneer DVR-108. I read reviews between the Pioneer and the NEC and while they have their strengths, the Pioneer overall has better hackability with the firmware and does burn a bit faster so yes go for the DVR-108. :D

An Upgraded firmware on a Pioneer DVR-108 with a spindle of Ritek G04 media makes for an awesome combination. I've gone through 180 successful burns with zero coasters. Only 1337s on these board can spot what I burn with these :  lol

Well, I got the NEC-3500 for XMAS. I updated the firmware to 2.28 and it works great. It burns my 4X media at 8X speed. That's pretty nice. Although, it still took about 10min to burn a DVD....although I was using my PC at the time, which seemed to cause some slowdown.
